If your PULSE Explore earbuds will not connect, keep disconnecting, or sound weak or uneven, first check that you are using the right connection, that the earbuds are charged, and that the PS Link adapter is positioned clearly. The fixes differ by device: PS5 and compatible PC/Mac audio use PS Link, a phone uses Bluetooth, and PlayStation Portal pairs directly over PS Link. Try the reversible checks and the reset that preserves pairings before using any reset that erases them.
Sony’s connection and troubleshooting steps apply across several different symptoms, but “not connecting,” “connecting and cutting out,” and “one earbud sounds quieter” do not necessarily point to the same fault. Work through the relevant path below rather than immediately deleting pairings or buying another adapter. These steps follow Sony’s US support guidance, checked October 30, 2026; Sony’s support pages do not display publication dates.
Which connection should PULSE Explore use?
Use PS Link for a PS5 or compatible PC/Mac setup with the USB adapter, Bluetooth for a compatible phone, and Portal’s built-in PS Link connection for PlayStation Portal. The adapter included with PULSE Explore is already paired to the earbuds, so it should work without a first-time pairing procedure. See Sony’s PULSE Explore connection guide.

| Host device | Connection to use | First check |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | PS Link through the included USB adapter | Insert the adapter, then remove both earbuds from their charged case. |
| Compatible PC or Mac | PS Link through the USB adapter | After connecting the adapter, check that “PlayStation Link Adapter” is selected as the audio output. |
| Compatible phone | Bluetooth | Choose PULSE Explore in the phone’s Bluetooth device list. |
| PlayStation Portal | Portal’s direct PS Link connection | Put the earbuds into pairing mode, then press Portal’s PS Link button. |
Do not try to set up the earbuds on PS5 as an ordinary Bluetooth headset; Sony’s documented PS5 audio route is the PS Link adapter. Also distinguish the included adapter from one purchased separately: the included unit is pre-paired, while a standalone or replacement adapter is not.

What should I check before resetting the earbuds?
Start with power, the selected connection method, and the adapter’s position. These checks are reversible and can resolve simple setup problems without clearing saved PS Link or Bluetooth connections.
- Check the charge. Dock both earbuds in the case. A red case battery indication means the case is low or empty. Sony says a full earbud charge from empty takes approximately 40 minutes and a full case charge from empty takes approximately 1.5 hours; these are Sony’s stated charge times, not guarantees of a particular listening duration.
- Use the included adapter for PS5 or PC/Mac PS Link. With the PS5 on, insert the adapter in a suitable USB-A port, then remove both earbuds from the case. The adapter’s documented connected indication is solid white. Sony describes the initial search as lasting about 30 seconds; if it times out, briefly press either earbud’s PS Link button to start another search.
- Check PC/Mac output selection. An adapter can be connected while the computer continues sending sound to another output. In the computer’s sound settings, select “PlayStation Link Adapter” as the active output device.
- Check whether another PS Link adapter has the connection. The earbuds can play from only one PS Link adapter at a time. If they seem connected to a different adapter, use Sony’s switching procedure rather than treating the currently inserted adapter as defective. Sony’s instructions for connecting to another device cover that process.
- For a phone, use Bluetooth pairing instead. Turn on Bluetooth in the phone settings, put the earbuds into pairing mode using the case, and choose PULSE Explore from the available Bluetooth devices.
- For Portal, use its PS Link controls. Put the earbuds into pairing mode from the case and press the PS Link button on Portal. Do not follow the PS5 adapter setup for this direct connection.
How do I pair PULSE Explore with a PS5, computer, phone, or Portal?
For the included adapter, charge and dock both earbuds, insert the adapter, and remove the earbuds while the PS5 is on. For a phone, Portal, or a separately obtained adapter, use the case’s pairing mode first; the target device then completes the connection in its own Bluetooth or PS Link controls.
PS5 using the included adapter
The included adapter and earbuds are pre-paired. With the console on, insert the adapter, then remove both earbuds from the case. Wait for the documented solid-white adapter indicator. If the search ends before the connection is made, briefly press either earbud’s PS Link button to start another search. If the included adapter repeatedly fails to connect after the charge and port checks, proceed to the update and reset steps below before considering replacement hardware.

Connect the adapter to a suitable USB port and use the computer’s sound settings to select “PlayStation Link Adapter.” Pairing alone does not guarantee that the computer will route audio to that device; an output still selected as speakers, a monitor, or another headset can make a successful connection appear silent. Sony documents adapter-based PS Link audio for compatible PC and Mac systems; this is distinct from phone Bluetooth pairing.
Phone over Bluetooth
With both earbuds docked, enter pairing mode from the case by holding the case’s PS Link button for approximately eight seconds, until the case’s blue light blinks rapidly. On the phone, open Bluetooth settings and select PULSE Explore from the device list. The phone controls the Bluetooth volume; the earbuds’ volume buttons control PS Link audio instead, so adjust the appropriate control for the connection you are using.

PlayStation Portal
Hold the case PS Link button for approximately eight seconds, until rapid blue blinking begins, then press the PS Link button on Portal. Portal pairs directly over PS Link; the USB adapter instructions are for a host device using that adapter.
New or replacement adapter
A separately obtained adapter is not pre-paired to the earbuds. Dock both earbuds, hold the case PS Link button for approximately eight seconds until rapid blue blinking begins, then press the PS Link button on the inserted adapter. Sony identifies the standalone CFI-ZWA3 as an adapter with interchangeable USB-C and supplied USB-A connectors, but the included adapter already works out of the box. A replacement or second adapter will not, by itself, fix an unrelated firmware, audio-output, or obstruction issue.
Indicator behavior is not universal across adapter models. Sony notes different indicator behavior for the older CFI-ZWA2 and standalone CFI-ZWA3, so do not assume that a color described for one model applies to the other.
What should I do if the earbuds keep cutting out?
For intermittent PS Link audio, check software on both earbuds and the adapter, then try an unobstructed USB location. Sony’s US troubleshooting page says both earbuds and the included adapter should have PS Link software version 2.0 or newer; moving the adapter is a diagnostic check, not proof that obstruction caused a particular dropout.
- Check for updates on PS5. Sony says PS5 system-software updates deliver earbud and adapter updates, with on-screen prompts. Follow any prompts shown and use Sony’s manual update-check guidance if you need to check their status.
- Try another suitable USB location. Sony recommends an unobstructed port and, where suitable, a front port for the best PS Link connection. Move the adapter so nearby objects or the console itself are less likely to block the connection, then check whether the symptom changes. This helps isolate placement as a factor but does not establish a cause on its own.
- If you do not have a PS5, consider the Windows driver route. Sony’s PS Link Driver can update the earbuds and adapter on Windows without a PS5. Sony’s live driver page has carried a notice that users may lose functionality during an update rollout; check the current notice before beginning, and do not assume a completion date or that every PC setup is unaffected.
- Confirm the active host and output. Make sure audio is still routed to the PS Link adapter on a computer, and check whether the earbuds have connected to another adapter. Only one PS Link adapter can play audio through the earbuds at a time.
- Use the preserving earbud reset. If the connection still drops, reset each earbud separately using the instructions below. This reset does not delete PS Link or Bluetooth pairings or audio settings.
Sony’s cited support guidance does not provide a population dropout rate or a measured success rate for these troubleshooting steps. A step may narrow down a cause without guaranteeing a cure.

Could weak or uneven sound be a fit or volume issue?
Yes. If audio is present but seems weak or unequal rather than repeatedly disconnecting, check the ear-tip seal and the correct volume control before treating it as a wireless dropout.
PULSE Explore includes four ear-tip sizes. Sony advises choosing tips that create a good acoustic seal; a loose or uneven seal can affect how loud or full the sound seems, even if the connection itself is stable. Try the supplied sizes and check that each earbud is seated consistently. No specific aftermarket tip compatibility is established by the cited guidance, so do not assume that an unverified replacement tip fits or will solve the problem.
Volume control depends on the transport: the earbud volume buttons control PS Link audio, while Bluetooth volume is controlled on the phone. If only phone audio seems quiet, adjust the phone’s volume; if the earbuds are connected through PS Link, use the earbud controls and also confirm that the host is sending audio to the adapter.
Which reset is safe, and which one erases pairings?
Try the individual earbud reset first because it preserves pairings and audio settings. Reserve the case pairing wipe, adapter reset, or resync for the matching problem, since those actions can clear connections or settings.
Reset each earbud without deleting pairings
Take one earbud out of the case and hold its PS Link button for at least 12 seconds. Repeat separately for the second earbud, then dock both in the case. Sony states that “Resetting won’t affect any PlayStation Link™ or Bluetooth pairings, or audio settings.” Resetting just one earbud does not replace the instruction to reset each one.

Reset the case while preserving pairings
If the problem appears specific to the case, dock both earbuds, briefly press the case PS Link button, then hold that button for at least 12 seconds. This is distinct from the two-stage pairing wipe below. Use the specific Sony case-reset instructions if the case itself is not behaving as expected.
Wipe pairings and audio settings only as a later step
Sony’s two-stage case-button procedure deletes both PS Link and Bluetooth pairings and audio settings. Dock both earbuds and briefly press the case PS Link button. Hold the button until rapid blue blinking begins at about eight seconds; while it is blinking, hold the button again for another eight seconds until rapid blue blinking appears. A brief red blink confirms the wipe. Afterward, you will need to pair the earbuds with the devices you use again and restore any audio settings.
Reset the adapter only when its connections are the issue
With the adapter inserted into a powered, compatible USB port, hold its PS Link button for 30 seconds. Sony says this clears the adapter’s PS Link connections. Because it is not the same as the preserving earbud reset, use it when you are addressing adapter connections, not as the first response to every sound problem.
Resync a case that flashes red after earbuds are mixed or replaced
A flashing-red case indication after a replacement earbud or a mix-up between sets calls for Sony’s case-and-earbud resync instructions. That resync deletes pairings and settings, so record that consequence before starting. Do not substitute the ordinary earbud reset for this documented resync process or assume that the pairing wipe alone will address a mismatched set.

When should I stop troubleshooting?
Stop before a data-erasing reset if you are unsure which device or pairings it will affect. Recheck the exact Sony instructions for your case, earbuds, or adapter, especially if the case is flashing red or you have a replacement earbud. If the issue remains after charge, connection selection, software, adapter placement, and the appropriate preserving reset, escalate to PlayStation Support. The available guidance does not establish that buying a new adapter or earbud set is necessary or that either purchase will fix a persistent fault.
In short, establish whether the problem is PS Link, Bluetooth, or sound fit; verify charge and output selection; update and test adapter placement for cutouts; then use the preserving reset before any wipe. Keep the distinction between an included pre-paired adapter and a new, unpaired adapter in mind when pairing again.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect PULSE Explore to two PS Link adapters at once?
No. Sony says the earbuds can play from only one PS Link adapter at a time. If you switch the active adapter, use Sony’s switching procedure rather than assuming both adapters can remain active for audio simultaneously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does my PULSE Explore adapter show a different light than the instructions?
Sony documents different indicator behavior for adapter models, including the older CFI-ZWA2 and standalone CFI-ZWA3. Check the model you have before interpreting a light color; a description for one model may not apply to another.
Can I use replacement ear tips from another brand with PULSE Explore?
Sony includes four tip sizes and recommends a good seal, but the cited support information does not verify specific third-party tips as compatible. Use the supplied sizes unless you can confirm compatibility for a replacement separately.
Will a PS5 system update update the earbuds too?
Sony says PS5 system-software updates deliver PS Link updates for the earbuds and adapter, with on-screen prompts. On Windows, Sony also documents a PS Link Driver route for updating without a PS5; check its live rollout notice before using it.
