For most players, the best Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour setup is free: turn on Pokémon GO’s own Battery Saver, switch AR and AR+ off, cap the phone at 60 Hz, lower brightness, download all assets over Wi‑Fi before leaving, and keep Adventure Sync enabled. Leave your phone’s system-level Battery Saver or Power saving mode off during the hour because those modes can interrupt GPS, background data, and Adventure Sync. If you need the screen off almost all the time, a Pokémon GO Plus + is the hardware option, but its auto-throw feature uses only regular Poké Balls, makes one attempt, and cannot use berries.

Spotlight Hour runs from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time. The featured species and bonus rotate weekly, so prepare the same way but change your item stock and play style for catch XP, candy, Stardust, transfer candy, or evolve XP.

What should I change first for a battery-friendly Spotlight Hour?

Start with the settings that remove the largest continuous loads: the display and camera. In Pokémon GO, open Map View → Poké Ball → Settings, then make these changes before 6 p.m.:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Set Battery Saver to on. Point the phone downward between catches so the display turns off while distance tracking continues.
  • Turn AR and AR+ off. Catching works without the rear-camera feed.
  • In Advanced Settings, turn Native Refresh Rate off. Set the phone itself to 60 Hz if its display supports 90 or 120 Hz.
  • Download game assets while connected to home Wi‑Fi, not over LTE or 5G.
  • Keep Adventure Sync on, but do not let the operating system put Pokémon GO or Google Play services to sleep.
  • Use manual brightness at a level you can read outdoors, rather than allowing adaptive brightness to jump to maximum.

Niantic’s Battery Saver is different from iPhone or Android battery-saving modes. It darkens the game display when the device is pointed down; the game continues tracking distance and can still vibrate for nearby Pokémon when vibration is enabled.

How does Pokémon GO’s Battery Saver work?

Pokémon GO’s in-game Battery Saver is the safest way to reduce screen drain during a walk. With it enabled, hold the phone face-down or let it hang at your side between encounters. The display goes dark, but Pokémon GO continues to track distance as if the screen were on.

Leave Vibration on if the phone is your alert device. Niantic states that vibration continues while Battery Saver is active. You can turn vibration off when a connected Pokémon GO Plus + is providing nearby alerts; otherwise you may miss spawns while the screen is dark.

Battery Saver does not pause the map, disable GPS, or replace a phone’s power-saving mode. If distance or spawns stop after the screen turns off, check the operating system restrictions described below rather than disabling Pokémon GO’s own setting.

Which in-game settings save the most battery and mobile data?

Turn AR and AR+ off

AR keeps the rear camera running while you aim, making it one of the heaviest phone workloads after the display. AR+ adds plane detection and an Awareness Meter, which can also slow a timed catch session because approaching too quickly may make a Pokémon flee. With AR disabled, the encounter uses a stable centered target and catches remain available without camera access.

Snapshot and AR Photobomb tools only activate when you deliberately take a photo, so they do not need to be disabled unless you are opening the camera during the hour.

Disable Native Refresh Rate for the hour

In Settings → Advanced Settings, switch Native Refresh Rate off. The game can otherwise render at the phone panel’s 90 or 120 Hz, increasing power and heat without a documented catch-rate benefit. Also cap the phone at 60 Hz through Android display controls, such as Samsung’s Motion smoothness setting, when battery life is the priority.

Lower and stabilize brightness

A bright outdoor screen is often the largest drain. BestForAndroid’s 2026 guidance uses roughly 60–70 percent brightness as a compromise; the usable level depends on sunlight and the display. Manual brightness avoids adaptive-brightness spikes to 100 percent. Turn off Always-On Display if it remains lit between checks.

Choose sound and vibration deliberately

Turning music off removes a small amount of processing. Sound effects can remain on as an audible alert. Vibration consumes motor power but is useful when Battery Saver has hidden the display. If the GO Plus + is connected and alerting reliably, vibration on the phone can be disabled.

Leave graphics on automatic unless the phone is overheating

Lower graphics quality can reduce heat and drain on an older handset. Keep automatic quality unless the phone is thermal-throttling, stuttering, or becoming uncomfortable to hold; changing quality does not substitute for disabling AR and high refresh rate.

How do I reduce Pokémon GO mobile-data use before Spotlight Hour?

The official data-saving step is Download All Assets. At home on Wi‑Fi, open Poké Ball → Settings → Advanced Settings → Download All Assets. Niantic says the download reduces mobile data consumed while exploring and that the available assets change as content is updated, so repeat it periodically. The first download can be several hundred megabytes according to Switchblade Gaming; do not start it on cellular just before the event.

Downloading assets does not make live map traffic disappear. Pokémon GO still needs a connection for spawns, catches, inventory changes, and event data, so monitor your phone’s data meter if your plan is limited. No official Niantic article publishes a fixed megabytes-per-hour figure for Spotlight Hour.

Some 2026 guides list a Data Saver toggle under Settings that reduces background animation and bandwidth. Niantic’s current Help Center index documents Battery Saver, Adventure Sync, Upload Management, and Download All Assets, but not a dedicated Data Saver FAQ. Treat that toggle as secondary; pre-downloading assets is the documented control.

Use Upload Later for Wayspot submissions

If you nominate a Wayspot during the walk, choose Upload Later rather than Upload Immediately or Upload While Playing. Niantic’s Upload Management options hold the nomination until Wi‑Fi; later, tap Poké Ball → Upload to send it. This keeps cellular bandwidth available for the event.

Should Adventure Sync stay on during Spotlight Hour?

Yes. Adventure Sync records kilometers when Pokémon GO is closed and can award Buddy Candy or hatch Eggs without significantly affecting battery life, according to Niantic. It requires Trainer Level 5 or higher and permission for Apple Health on iOS or Google Fit on Android; a home-screen widget can take up to an hour to show new distance.

Adventure Sync is not a replacement for GPS during the event. The map must remain connected to show wild spawns, and OS restrictions can stop Adventure Sync from recording. Keep Pokémon GO out of Samsung’s Sleeping apps list and do not use an operating-system mode that blocks background location.

Which phone-level settings help, and which ones break GPS?

Phone changes that usually help

  • Set the display to 60 Hz.
  • Use manual brightness around the lowest readable outdoor level.
  • Prefer Wi‑Fi when stationary at a café, mall, or indoor stop; Wi‑Fi generally uses less power than searching for a weak 5G or LTE signal.
  • Set other apps such as Maps or Weather to location access only while in use so they do not poll GPS beside Pokémon GO.
  • Avoid fast-charging in direct sun. Heat accelerates battery drain and can make the phone throttle.

Phone changes to leave off for the hour

Do not confuse a dark Pokémon GO screen with a restricted app. Pixel Battery Saver can limit background location, while Extreme Battery Saver can also disable location-related Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth scanning. On Samsung, switch Settings → Device care → Battery → Power saving off and remove Pokémon GO from Background usage limits → Sleeping apps.

On Pixel, Data Saver can restrict background traffic. Turn it off for the event or allow unrestricted data for Google Play services and Google Play Store, which Pokémon GO identifies in its background-data troubleshooting. If GPS drops after the screen goes dark, keep the game visible until the signal returns.

Settings → Advanced Settings → Refresh Game Data can clear a bad GPS or overheated state. It may turn Adventure Sync off, so check and re-enable Adventure Sync afterward.

How should settings change for each Spotlight Hour bonus?

The best setup depends on what the bonus rewards. Catch-focused hours benefit from continuous walking and quick checks; an evolve-XP hour can move its most battery-intensive work indoors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Bonus Play plan Useful preparation
2× catch XP Walk with Battery Saver between encounters, AR off, and vibration on unless a GO Plus + handles alerts. Use a Lucky Egg during the catch window if you want to multiply XP.
2× catch Candy Prioritize catches and carry enough Poké Balls and berries. A GO Plus + can auto-throw regular Balls at known species, but it cannot use berries.
2× catch Stardust Keep the map active and catch as many featured Pokémon as practical. Use a Star Piece for the relevant window.
2× transfer Candy Let storage fill with candidates, then transfer during the hour. Clear space beforehand only if you need room for new catches; otherwise save transfers for the bonus.
2× evolve XP Catch during 6–7 p.m., then evolve indoors on Wi‑Fi with the screen on. Prepare Pokémon and enough Candy before the hour; evolving does not require outdoor GPS or AR.

Spotlight Hour’s species and bonus change weekly. The 2026 schedule moved to Thursdays from 6–7 p.m. local time beginning 18 June after an earlier Tuesday slot and a pause. For example, the listed 29 October 2026 hour featured Gastly with 2× evolve XP; Eurogamer and Pokémon Database listed the October sequence as Seedot, Elgyem, Stufful, Morelull, and Gastly with different bonuses. Nintendo Wire identified the following week’s species as Teddiursa wearing a witch hat before that name appeared on the Pokémon Database table. Check the current in-game announcement because makeup hours can move when Niantic announces an issue.

Is Pokémon GO Plus + worth it for battery life?

It is worthwhile when your priority is keeping the phone screen off, not when you need maximum control over every catch or shiny check. Pokémon GO Plus + connects over Bluetooth so you can play while the phone is asleep or Pokémon GO is running in the background. It can auto-spin nearby Photo Discs and, when enabled, auto-throw at eligible Pokémon.

What auto-throw can and cannot do

  • Auto-throw uses regular Poké Balls only.
  • It targets species already registered in your Pokédex. An uncaught species flashes yellow so you can press the main button instead.
  • It makes one catch attempt and cannot use berries.
  • Premier Balls, GO Safari Balls, and other specialty balls cannot be used through Bluetooth auto-throw.
  • For button-initiated throws, device settings can change the ball type to Great or Ultra Balls.

That makes the accessory a poor choice for a new species, a suspected shiny, or any encounter where a berry and a deliberate throw matter. It is better for routine candy grinding while the phone remains in a pocket.

Battery, charging, and compatibility

Pokémon Support estimates about one week of battery life when the accessory is connected for two to three hours per day. The official product overview lists a charging time of approximately three hours and 30 minutes, a weight of approximately 50 grams, and USB‑C charging. Pokémon GO Plus + has no battery-saver mode of its own.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility details differ between official pages: the product overview lists Android 7 or later and iOS 14 or later with iPhone 7 or newer, while Pokémon Support’s 30 January 2026 FAQ lists iOS 13 or later and Android 8.0 or later. Check the current Support FAQ and your phone’s OS before buying. Do not use the device while operating a vehicle.

How much battery can these settings save?

Niantic does not publish official percentage savings for Battery Saver, AR off, 60 Hz, or a Spotlight Hour session. The following figures are estimates reported by BestForAndroid in 2026, not Niantic telemetry:

  • In-game Battery Saver: approximately 25–35 percent, with larger gains on OLED or AMOLED screens and smaller gains on LCD panels.
  • AR off: approximately 10–15 percent.
  • 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz: approximately 10–15 percent.
  • Brightness around 60 percent: approximately 8–12 percent.
  • Always-On Display off: approximately 3–5 percent.
  • Limiting other background location apps: approximately 5–10 percent.

BestForAndroid says the combination of Battery Saver, AR off, and 60 Hz can roughly double active-play time on a flagship with a 5,000 mAh battery, describing a change from about three hours to about six hours. The same publisher reports roughly six to seven hours on a current flagship with those settings and about 65 percent brightness, versus about three to four hours with default settings, AR on, 120 Hz, and full brightness. These are publisher-reported estimates under stated conditions, not a promise for every model.

Switchblade Gaming separately estimates that Battery Saver can extend a walking session by 30–45 minutes. Less screen time with a Pokémon GO Plus + is estimated by BestForAndroid to save 15–20 percent over a typical outing. Treat all of these as approximate; temperature, signal strength, screen brightness, battery age, and phone model can dominate the result.

What should I do the night before and during the hour?

Night before or while on Wi‑Fi

  1. Open Poké Ball → Settings → Advanced Settings and run Download All Assets on Wi‑Fi.
  2. Confirm Settings → General → Adventure Sync is on and that Apple Health or Google Fit permissions remain granted.
  3. Turn AR and AR+ off, disable Native Refresh Rate, and set the phone to 60 Hz.
  4. Charge the phone fully. If its battery is small or already near 40 percent, pack a USB‑C PD power bank of about 10,000 mAh.
  5. Stock Poké Balls and berries. Clear storage unless the coming bonus is 2× transfer Candy and you deliberately want to transfer during the hour.
  6. If using GO Plus +, charge it; full charging takes approximately three hours and 30 minutes. Enable auto-spin, and enable auto-throw only when you accept its regular-Ball, one-attempt limits.

At 6 p.m.

  1. Turn the phone’s Battery Saver, Power saving, Extreme Battery Saver, and similar system restrictions off.
  2. Turn Pokémon GO’s own Battery Saver on. Keep vibration on unless GO Plus + is providing the alerts.
  3. Use cellular for the live map, but do not download assets or upload Wayspot data over LTE or 5G.
  4. Between clusters, point the phone down so the display sleeps. If the phone becomes hot, move into shade and stop fast charging in direct sun.

After 7 p.m.

For an evolve-XP bonus, finish evolving indoors on Wi‑Fi with the screen on. Re-enable any system battery features you normally use after checking that Adventure Sync is still enabled.

What should I do if GPS, spawns, or data fail?

  • GPS says signal not found after the screen sleeps: disable the phone’s system Battery Saver or Power saving, remove Pokémon GO from Sleeping apps, and keep the game visible until the signal stabilizes.
  • Adventure Sync stopped counting: restore location and background-data permissions, check Apple Health or Google Fit, and verify that a system saver did not restrict Pokémon GO or Google Play services.
  • The game uses unexpected cellular data: stop any asset download or Wayspot upload, return to Wi‑Fi, and run Download All Assets before the next event.
  • The phone overheats: lower brightness, cap refresh at 60 Hz, disable AR, move out of direct sun, and avoid charging while playing in heat.
  • Refresh Game Data fixed the map but distance stopped: turn Adventure Sync back on because that reset can disable it.

How were these recommendations selected?

The recommendations prioritize settings that preserve catches while reducing continuous display, camera, refresh-rate, heat, and cellular work. They also separate official Niantic controls from guide-reported options, keep Adventure Sync reliable, and account for the real trade-off between a fully controlled catch and a screen-off accessory. Battery figures are labeled as estimates from the named publishers because Niantic does not provide official Spotlight Hour telemetry percentages.

FAQ

Can I save data by closing Pokémon GO during Spotlight Hour?

Closing the app stops the live map and wild-spawn view, so it is not a way to play the hour. Adventure Sync can record distance with the app closed, but it cannot replace the connection needed to see and catch event spawns.

Does turning AR off reduce shiny odds?

AR changes how the encounter is displayed through the camera; the available data provides no evidence that it changes encounter or shiny rates. It is the safer battery choice because catches remain available without the camera feed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I run Download All Assets?

Niantic says available assets change with game content, so rerun it on Wi‑Fi when the app has received a substantial update or before a major event. Do not assume one download covers every future Spotlight Hour.

Can a GO Plus + catch a Pokémon I have never registered?

Auto-throw is limited to species already in your Pokédex. A new species flashes yellow, allowing a manual button press, but the device still cannot use berries and makes only one automatic catch attempt.
