Before capturing, scroll the element that owns the list and wait for an application-specific signal that more content has loaded—or that the list has reached its end. If the scrollbar belongs to a nested container, scroll or capture that container instead.
Why a full-page screenshot can miss later content
Playwright’s fullPage: true setting controls the size of the captured document. It does not guarantee that content gated on real scrolling has been loaded. Infinite lists may add items in response to scroll events or IntersectionObserver; lazy images and scroll-triggered reveals can behave similarly. Virtualized lists may render only rows near the viewport, even when the underlying list is much longer. A screenshot can therefore cover the document’s current extent yet omit content that would appear after scrolling.
There is a second issue to check: the visible scrollbar may belong to an element inside the page rather than the document. A document-level full-page screenshot does not expand an arbitrary scrollable element. Playwright’s maintainer described this as expected behavior in a Playwright issue about full-page screenshots and non-body scroll containers.
Identify what scrolls and what triggers loading
- Check the scroll owner. Scroll the page manually and observe whether
window.scrollYchanges. If it stays put while a panel moves, inspect that panel’sscrollTopand its CSS foroverflow: autooroverflow: scroll. - Check whether scrolling changes the page. Compare the item count before and after scrolling. Note whether images load, a loading indicator appears, or a “Load more” control must be activated.
- Choose a completion signal. Prefer a known item count, a visible end marker, or a loading indicator disappearing. A quiet network alone does not establish that an infinite list is complete.

Scroll a document-level infinite list before capturing
Use the page’s actual loading behavior and a meaningful stop condition. The following is a pattern, not a universal drop-in loop: replace the selectors and loading logic with those used by the target page.

Some lists have no natural end, and a timeout without new items may mean the site is still loading, a trigger failed, or the end was reached. If the page has a reliable end marker or expected item count, use it as the stopping condition. If it exposes a “Load more” button rather than loading on scroll, click it and wait for the item count or loading state to change.

Handle an inner scroll container
When a panel owns the scrollbar, scroll that locator rather than repeatedly scrolling the window. For example:

If the desired artifact is the panel itself, capture the element with locator.screenshot(); that image represents the element’s box, not an automatically expanded record of every possible scroll position. Choose the right artifact for the job
- One tall document image: Load the required document content first, then capture with
fullPage: true. - A scrollable panel: Scroll or capture the panel itself; document capture will not expand it.
- A virtualized list: Visit each required range so rows render, or use the application’s data/state interface if you need a complete inventory rather than a visual record.
- Visual coverage of a long feed: Capture a sequence of viewport screenshots while advancing through the content, rather than assuming one giant screenshot contains rows that were never rendered.
Playwright’s feature request concerning content gated on scrolling describes cases involving intersection-based loading and virtualized lists. It does not establish that an API option automatically scrolls through and loads every item.
Avoid unreliable readiness checks
- Do not rely on a fixed sleep as the completion rule. A short delay may be too short on a slow run and unnecessarily long on a fast one. Playwright discourages
waitForTimeoutin production tests; wait for a selector, count change, or other relevant signal instead. - Do not equate network idle with list completion. A page can be network-quiet between batches or continue to load only after another scroll. Tie readiness to the content the screenshot needs.
- Do not assume a timeout means “end of list.” Check the site’s loading state, end marker, or expected count before deciding to stop.
Troubleshooting missing content

Does fullPage: true scroll an infinite list automatically?
No. It captures the document’s current scrollable extent; scroll-dependent content must be triggered and loaded before capture.
Can a full-page screenshot include every row of a virtualized list?
Not necessarily. Virtualized lists often render only rows near the viewport, so visit the required ranges or use the application’s data interface when you need a complete inventory.

Should I wait for networkidle before taking the screenshot?
Use a page-specific readiness signal instead. Network quiet does not prove an infinite list reached its end.
