If OBS plays only the first item in a VLC playlist, first determine whether the playlist contains local files or a YouTube Live URL. For local files, verify VLC is installed with the same architecture as OBS, test each entry directly in VLC, and inspect the VLC Video Source playlist and playback settings. If the item is a YouTube URL, test that exact URL in VLC first: OBS cannot advance a playlist item that VLC itself cannot open.
There is no confirmed universal fix for this symptom across current OBS and VLC versions. The steps below help isolate whether the issue is playlist setup or playback of a particular media item.
First identify what the playlist contains
“Only the first video” can describe two different problems. A local playlist may stop advancing from one file to the next, or OBS may play a first local file and then fail to open a YouTube Live URL in the following entry. Those are separate failure points.
- Local video files: OBS’s VLC Video Source is designed to play playlists. Check that VLC is installed, that its architecture matches OBS, and that every file can play in VLC on its own.
- YouTube Live URL: Check whether the exact URL opens directly in VLC before changing OBS playlist options. A remote URL failing at the playback layer is not evidence that playlist sequencing is broken.
- Playlist file: If you added a playlist file rather than separate media entries, test its entries individually and confirm its paths are valid on the machine running OBS.
When asking for help, include your operating system, OBS and VLC versions, the kind of playlist entries involved, and what “first video” means in your setup. Without those details, the cause cannot be identified reliably.

Check VLC installation and test each entry
- Confirm VLC is installed. OBS’s VLC Video Source uses VLC libraries. OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC; the installation architecture must match.
- Open each playlist item directly in VLC on the same computer. Test local files and any network URL separately. If an item fails here, troubleshoot that item or VLC’s ability to open it before treating OBS as the cause.
- Check local file paths and access. Make sure the files still exist where the playlist expects them and are accessible to the account running OBS. For a playlist file, check whether its entries use paths that resolve on this machine.
- Return to OBS and review the VLC Video Source playlist. Confirm that all intended entries are present and in the expected order. Remove and re-add a failing item if necessary, then test the source again.
A report of a playlist stopping on the last frame after its first item dates to OBS 21.0.1 and VLC 3.0.0. It demonstrates that the symptom has occurred, but those old versions do not establish a cause or fix for current installations.
Review playlist playback options in OBS
In the VLC Video Source properties, inspect the playlist and the playback options relevant to your intended behavior. OBS documents controls including Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist, as well as visibility behavior and network caching settings.
- Loop Playlist: Controls whether the playlist restarts after it reaches the end. It does not make an unplayable URL work.
- Shuffle Playlist: Changes the ordering of items. Turn it off while diagnosing if you need to verify a specific sequence.
- Visibility behavior: Check whether playback behavior when the source is hidden matches how your scene uses the source.
- Network caching: This may matter for network media, but changing it cannot fix a URL VLC cannot open at all.
Test with a short sequence of known-good local files. If they advance but a YouTube URL does not, the local playlist mechanism is working and the remote item needs separate investigation. OBS also implements playlist next and previous hotkeys, but those controls do not diagnose why a particular item fails.
If a YouTube Live URL is the failing item
Try the exact URL directly in VLC. A July 2023 OBS forum participant reported that a YouTube URL failed both in VLC Video Source and when opened directly in VLC; the participant later reported playback after updating a YouTube Lua script, with buffering. This is one historical user report, not current official guidance or proof that the same workaround applies now.

HLS manifest URLs are an unverified workaround
In a January 2026 OBS forum discussion, a participant reported partial success after using a live HLS index.m3u8 manifest URL instead of an ordinary YouTube watch URL. The participant was unsure whether the manifest URL would stay the same. Treat this as a temporary, user-reported workaround, not a stable or guaranteed fix. Do not assume a copied manifest URL will remain valid or keep working.
Separate URL playback from playlist sequencing
If VLC cannot open the YouTube URL directly, changing Loop Playlist or Shuffle Playlist is unlikely to resolve the underlying playback failure. If VLC opens it but OBS does not, note the exact URL type and OBS/VLC versions when seeking help; the available reports do not establish a universal current fix for that case.

Consider a plugin only for local playlist management
The OBS Media Playlist Source plugin is an alternative to consider if your main need is easier editing and control of local media playlists. Check its current compatibility requirements against your installed OBS version before installing it. The available information does not show that this plugin fixes YouTube Live URL playback.
