If OBS shows a black screen while you loop a cartoon, first check which source is playing it: use Media Source for one local video file and enable Loop; use VLC Video for a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Then confirm the source is visible and not covered by another source. The cause depends on where the black screen appears, so test the OBS preview, a recording, and the YouTube stream separately before changing capture or graphics settings.
1. Identify how the cartoon is added to OBS
The right fix depends on whether OBS is playing one file or a playlist. OBS’s Media Sources guide, published January 11, 2022, documents both options and their loop controls: OBS Media Sources.
One cartoon file: Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene that should show the cartoon.
- In the Sources dock, select the cartoon’s Media Source. If there is no media source yet, use the + button, choose Media Source, and add the local video file.
- Open the source’s properties and check that the correct file is selected and Loop is enabled. OBS defines this option as replaying the file after playback completes.
- Check the preview to confirm the video is in frame and visible.
Playlist: VLC Video
- Use a VLC Video source for a playlist, rather than treating the playlist as a single Media Source file.
- Make sure VLC is installed. On a 64-bit OBS setup, install 64-bit VLC; the OBS guide notes that the application bitness must match.
- Open the VLC Video source properties, check the playlist entries, and enable Loop Playlist.
- Inspect the OBS preview while the playlist plays. If it is still black, continue with the visibility and output checks below.
2. Check visibility, layer order, and framing
A source can be playing but hidden behind another source, disabled, or positioned outside the visible canvas. OBS’s Sources Guide, published January 11, 2022, explains that sources higher in the Sources list appear above those below them.
- Visibility: In the Sources dock, check the eye icon beside the media source. It should be enabled.
- Layer order: If another source above the cartoon covers the canvas, move the cartoon above it or move the covering source below it, as appropriate for your scene.
- Position and size: Select the cartoon source and check its position and sizing in the preview. Make sure it is within the canvas and large enough to see.
- Scene selection: Verify that the scene currently shown in OBS includes the cartoon source you configured.
3. Find where the picture turns black
“Black screen” can mean different things: the source may be black in the OBS preview, the OBS program or recording may be black, or the YouTube stream may be black even though OBS looks correct. Check those points in order. This is a practical way to narrow the fault, not a published OBS diagnosis for every black-screen case.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Look at the OBS preview. If the cartoon is black there, return to the source type, file or playlist selection, loop setting, visibility, layer order, and framing.
- Make a short local recording and play it back. If the preview looks right but the recording is black, the problem is beyond the preview itself. Check the scene and output you recorded before going live.
- Run a short YouTube test stream. If OBS preview and recording show the cartoon but YouTube does not, investigate the live output and YouTube side rather than assuming the media source is broken.
OBS’s Quick Start Guide, published August 25, 2021, recommends testing a short recording or stream before relying on a setup live. A test also helps establish whether the issue is local playback, OBS output, or delivery to YouTube.
4. Use capture-source fixes only when they match your source
A local cartoon in Media Source or VLC Video is not the same as a display capture or Game Capture source. The OBS Project’s Laptop Troubleshooting guide (June 12, 2021) discusses dual-GPU laptops and display capture, while its Game Capture Troubleshooting guide (January 12, 2022) covers blank Game Capture. Those instructions are relevant only if the black picture comes from the capture type they address; they do not establish that a local video file has a graphics-processor mismatch.

5. Common causes and what to check
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| The cartoon is a single file and stays black in OBS | Confirm the Media Source points to the intended file, then check visibility, layer order, and framing. |
| A playlist is black or does not play | Confirm it is a VLC Video source, VLC is installed, and the VLC and OBS bitness match. Check the playlist entries and Loop Playlist setting. |
| The source exists but another scene element shows instead | Check the eye icon and the Sources list order; a source higher in the list can cover the cartoon. |
| OBS preview looks correct but the recording is black | Play back a new short recording and check that the intended scene and source are included in the output. |
| OBS preview and recording look right but YouTube is black | Use a short test stream to isolate the issue to live output or YouTube delivery; the OBS source guides do not identify a single cause for this case. |
| A display or game capture source is black | Follow the OBS troubleshooting guide for that specific capture source, rather than applying it to a local media file. |

7. Check your YouTube rights before looping a cartoon
Technical playback and permission to broadcast are separate questions. Use cartoons you own or are licensed to stream, and review the applicable YouTube rules for copyright and reused content. A video playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it or that it complies with YouTube’s policies.
