Minecraft Dungeons II supports four-player co-op, but the four-player limit is shared by the whole party. You can play with up to four people on one Switch or Switch 2, up to four people online, or combine local and remote players in one party. Local play uses one console and one screen; online play requires internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership. Mojang also documents party codes, matchmaking, and cross-play with other platforms.
The setup is straightforward once you choose the right mode: connect the additional controllers before launching a local session, or use the game’s displayed party-code or matchmaking option for remote players. The sections below explain the requirements and the limits without assuming button prompts that Nintendo or Mojang have not published.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Free plan / price | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local (couch) co-op | People sharing one room | 1–4 players on one system and one screen | No Nintendo Switch Online membership for offline same-console play | Switch; Switch 2 | Nov 2026 |
| Online co-op | Players on separate systems | 1–4 online players; party codes and matchmaking available | Nintendo Switch Online membership sold separately; internet and Nintendo Account required | Switch; Switch 2; supported cross-play platforms | Nov 2026 |
| Mixed co-op | Local players joining remote friends | Up to four total, including local and online players | Nintendo Switch Online required for the online portion | Switch and Switch 2, with supported cross-play systems | Nov 2026 |
What co-op modes does Minecraft Dungeons II support on Switch?
Minecraft Dungeons II has three distinct arrangements:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Local or couch co-op: two or more people share one Switch or Switch 2 and the same display. Nintendo lists one to four players on one system.
- Online co-op: players use separate systems and connect over the internet. Nintendo lists one to four online players.
- Mixed co-op: local players on one console join remote players on other systems. Nintendo gives a two-local-plus-two-remote example, while the total party cap remains four.
Nintendo describes local and online play as freely combinable, but “four players” does not mean four people on the couch plus four more online. A party cannot exceed four participants in total. The same four-person ceiling applies regardless of whether the group is all local, all online, or mixed.

The Switch 2 and original Switch editions both launched on September 29, 2026, according to Nintendo’s listings. The original Switch software is listed as supported on Switch 2, and Nintendo also sells a distinct Switch 2 product listing, so identify which edition you own before inviting friends.
How do I set up local couch co-op on one Switch or Switch 2?
Local co-op needs one console, the game, a display or supported play mode, and a separate connected controller for every participating player. Nintendo’s published example is same-screen co-op in TV mode. The store listings also show TV, tabletop, and handheld modes as supported game modes, but they do not establish that four players work identically or comfortably in every mode.
- Prepare the controllers. Connect and assign an additional controller for each person who will play. Use controller hardware that the console recognizes before starting the session. Nintendo’s Switch 2 guidance supports original Switch controller categories, but the official material does not confirm that one detached Joy-Con is a complete controller for this specific game.
- Launch Minecraft Dungeons II. Start the game on the console that will host the local session. Keep all local players near the same screen because this mode uses one shared game view.
- Choose the local joining option shown by the game. Follow the on-screen prompt for adding local players. The published information confirms the local-player flow but does not specify a universal button or menu label, so use the wording currently displayed by your edition.
- Confirm each player has joined. Check the party or character display before beginning an activity. If fewer players appear than expected, return to the controller assignment screen and reconnect the missing controller rather than assuming the game has accepted it.
- Start the activity. Once the intended local players are visible, begin the mission. Everyone remains on the same console and display; no internet connection or Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for this offline arrangement.
What changes in TV, tabletop, and handheld modes?
Nintendo lists all three modes as supported for the game, while its explicit co-op example uses TV mode. That means you should not promise a particular four-player layout in tabletop or handheld mode. For a group session, TV mode with a large shared display is the clearest documented arrangement; use the game’s own prompts to determine whether your controller and display setup is accepted in another mode.
How many controllers should I prepare?
Prepare one functioning, connected controller per local participant. A single detached Joy-Con may be recognized by the console in some games, but the available Minecraft Dungeons II information does not establish that it is sufficient here. If a player cannot join, verify that the controller is paired and assigned before launching or re-entering the local joining flow.
How do I play Minecraft Dungeons II online co-op?
Online co-op uses separate systems and an internet connection. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Account and a separately sold Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features on Switch and Switch 2. Each remote player also needs access to the game on their own system.

- Check every player’s online prerequisites. Each participant should have internet access, a Nintendo Account, and the Nintendo Switch Online access required by Nintendo’s listing. Subscription rules on other consoles are determined by those platforms.
- Launch the same game edition or a supported cross-play edition. Confirm that everyone is running Minecraft Dungeons II rather than the original Minecraft Dungeons or the sandbox game Minecraft. Also confirm that each player is using a supported system and an up-to-date installation.
- Open the game’s online co-op feature. Use the online option currently shown in each player’s game. Mojang documents party codes and matchmaking, but the available official material does not provide a fixed Switch button sequence or guarantee that labels remain identical after updates.
- Invite or find the other players. If the host displays a party code, share that code with the intended participants. Alternatively, use matchmaking where it is offered. Players should join through the option their own game presents rather than through an unverified console-menu path.
- Verify the party count. Count every local and remote participant before starting. The maximum is four, so a fifth player cannot be added even if the group has open local controllers or another online invitation.
How do party codes and matchmaking differ?
A party code is a direct joining method: the host shares a code and the other players enter or select the corresponding joining option in their games. Matchmaking searches for an available session instead of requiring the host to send a code. Mojang names both systems, but exact menu wording and button presses can vary by platform and software update.
Can I combine local and online players?
Yes. Mixed co-op lets players on one Switch or Switch 2 join remote players, with four people total in the party. Nintendo illustrates two people sharing one console while two others connect remotely.
Recommended Free Tools
- Set up the local group first. Connect and assign the controllers for the people sharing the host console, then use the game’s local joining prompt.
- Open the online connection option on that session. The host should use the online flow displayed by Minecraft Dungeons II after the local players are present.
- Invite remote players by party code or matchmaking. Remote participants join from their own systems using the method available in their games.
- Keep the total at four. Two local plus two remote is a documented example, not an additional allowance. One local player and three remote players, or four local players with no remote players, also fit the same cap.
The online portion still triggers Nintendo’s online-service requirements. A console can host an offline local group without that membership, but adding remote players changes the session into an online or mixed session.
Can Switch and Switch 2 players play together?
Yes. Switch and Switch 2 owners can use online cross-play for Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang also lists Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 among the cross-play platforms for the game.
Cross-play does not turn two consoles into a local-wireless session. Each remote player still uses a separate system, an internet connection, and the online access required by that platform. Players sharing one screen remain local participants; they do not need a second console merely to join one another on the same couch.

Before attempting cross-play, confirm that every person has Minecraft Dungeons II rather than the first game, that the relevant version is installed, and that everyone is signed in to the account system required for online play. If a cross-platform friend cannot be found, first check that the game is presenting the same online or matchmaking option on both sides; do not assume a particular Switch system-menu route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo I need Nintendo Switch Online for couch co-op?
No. Nintendo’s membership requirement is stated for online features, not for an offline same-console session. Two to four players can share one Switch or Switch 2 without Nintendo Switch Online as long as the game recognizes their controllers.
You do need Nintendo Switch Online when the party includes remote players connecting over the internet. Mixed co-op therefore needs the membership for the online part even if some participants are sitting beside the host. Nintendo also requires a Nintendo Account and internet access for online features.
How is the Switch version different from the Switch 2 version?
Nintendo lists an original Switch edition as compatible with Switch 2 and also provides a separate Switch 2 product listing. Compatibility means the Switch software can be used on Switch 2; it does not mean the two store listings are the same product.
Check the platform label on the product page or your purchase record before buying or troubleshooting. If two friends report different menus or features, verify their edition first. The co-op player counts published for the Nintendo versions are one to four on one system and one to four online, but those figures do not establish identical performance or display behavior in every play mode.

What should I check when a co-op session will not start?
Use these checks to isolate the setup problem. They are verification steps, not guaranteed fixes for a particular error.
- Confirm the intended mode. Decide whether the group is local, online, or mixed. A second console cannot join a same-screen-only session without switching to the online flow.
- Check controller assignment. For local players, reconnect and assign every controller before using the game’s local joining prompt. Replace or recharge a controller that the console does not recognize.
- Check account and membership status. Remote players need internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online on Nintendo systems. A local-only session does not require that subscription.
- Count the party. Remove an existing participant or invitation if the party has already reached four people. There is no separate allowance for local and online groups.
- Check the game and platform version. Confirm that everyone is running Minecraft Dungeons II and that the intended Switch or Switch 2 edition is installed. The first Minecraft Dungeons is a different game.
- Use the displayed joining method. For online play, try the party-code or matchmaking option actually shown by the game. Published documentation does not support a universal sequence of Switch button presses.
- Check cross-play eligibility. If a player is on Windows, Steam, Xbox Series X|S, or PlayStation 5, confirm that the cross-play option is enabled or available in that edition and that all players are online.
- Recheck the display mode. If a local group is trying tabletop or handheld mode, move to TV mode when possible. Nintendo lists all three modes as supported but explicitly illustrates same-screen co-op in TV mode.
What is not required, and what remains unclear?
The original Minecraft Dungeons is not a prerequisite for Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang describes an optional Hero Cape reward for people who play both games with the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026; that reward is separate from co-op access and does not determine whether a player can join a session.
Official information available for the Nintendo versions does not establish how each local guest’s hero save is owned, whether an offline hero can be used online in every circumstance, or how cross-save behaves between systems. Treat those as account-and-save questions to verify in the game’s current support information rather than assuming that local guest progress transfers automatically.
How should I choose between local, online, and mixed co-op?
Choose local co-op when everyone can share one console and display and you want to avoid an online subscription. Choose online co-op when players are in different locations or want separate screens. Choose mixed co-op when some players are together and others are remote; it offers the most flexible arrangement but still counts every participant toward the four-player limit and requires online access for the remote connections.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the original Minecraft Dungeons required before starting the sequel?
No. Minecraft Dungeons II is a separate game, so a new player can start with it directly. Mojang describes an optional Hero Cape reward for playing both titles with the same Microsoft account before December 31, 2026; that reward is not a co-op prerequisite.

Can local guest players share or transfer their hero saves between consoles?
The published Nintendo and Mojang material does not establish ownership rules for every local guest hero or guarantee cross-save behavior between systems. Do not assume that an offline guest character automatically becomes available online or on another console.
Can one detached Joy-Con be used as a controller for Minecraft Dungeons II?
The available game-specific documentation does not confirm that a single detached Joy-Con is a complete controller for this title. Connect a controller that the console recognizes for each local participant and follow the game’s displayed joining prompt.
Does four-player support mean four local players plus four online friends?
No. Four is the total party capacity, covering local and remote participants together. A documented mixed example is two players on one console and two remote players, not eight players.
Why might a handheld or tabletop setup feel different from the documented co-op example?
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes as supported, but its explicit same-screen co-op example is in TV mode. The published information does not promise that four players fit or behave identically in every display configuration.
