If FFmpeg keeps disconnecting from a YouTube live stream on a DigitalOcean Droplet, first identify which layer is failing: the configured YouTube ingest endpoint, FFmpeg’s output process, the Droplet’s network, or a cloud or host firewall. There is no universal reconnect flag that fixes all four. Capture the exact error and output protocol before changing settings.
Why does my FFmpeg YouTube stream keep disconnecting?
A disconnect can mean different things: FFmpeg exited, YouTube rejected or lost the ingest connection, the Droplet lost connectivity, or a firewall blocked outbound traffic. The title alone does not identify the cause; the FFmpeg build, command, ingest URL, logs, and firewall rules matter. Work through the checks below in order, changing one relevant setting at a time.
Capture evidence before changing the command
Record the following while the problem is occurring. Redact the stream key anywhere you save or share the command; anyone with the key may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- The deployed FFmpeg version and build configuration, using
ffmpeg -version. - The complete command line with the stream key removed or replaced by
[REDACTED], including the output protocol and URL hostname. - The exact FFmpeg error lines around the drop, whether the FFmpeg process exits or stays running, and how long after launch the disconnect happens.
- Whether the same input and output work from another host or from your local machine, if you can test safely.
- The time of each drop, so you can compare FFmpeg logs, DigitalOcean metrics, and any network changes.
Do not publish the full ingest URL if it contains the stream key. These observations help distinguish a bad endpoint or authentication configuration from a process exit or network interruption; they do not, by themselves, prove which party caused a drop.

Verify YouTube’s ingest URL and protocol
Use the ingest address configured for the YouTube stream you are actually broadcasting to, not a hostname copied from a different setup. YouTube’s LiveStreams API exposes primary and backup addresses for RTMP and RTMPS, including ingestionAddress, backupIngestionAddress, rtmpsIngestionAddress, and rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Compare the URL in FFmpeg with the applicable address in YouTube’s stream configuration. YouTube also notes that some encoders expect the stream URL and stream name to be combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; follow the format required by your encoder. If the output uses RTMPS
- Confirm that the URL uses
rtmpsand points to an endpoint that expects RTMPS. - Confirm that the connection reaches port
443on the ingestion server. - Make sure TLS SNI uses the server hostname. A connection can reach the TLS layer without the hostname, but YouTube requires it for server authentication.
- Do not send cleartext RTMP to an RTMPS endpoint. YouTube says this mismatch can result in an SSL error or an unhelpful timeout; a wrong endpoint, port, or SNI can also cause TLS errors.
These checks are based on YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide. If the error points to TLS, verify the actual URL and hostname rather than treating every timeout as a firewall issue.

Consider protocol trade-offs before switching
YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMP and RTMPS are options for normal, low, or ultra-low latency; RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection. HLS and DASH are encrypted, segment-based alternatives that support additional codecs but generally add latency. A protocol change only helps if your encoder supports the output and the added latency is acceptable. Consult YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison before changing a working delivery design.
Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the protocol they document
FFmpeg’s reconnect options are documented under its HTTP protocol, not as a general solution for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. The HTTP options include reconnect (retry after a disconnect before EOF), reconnect_at_eof (treat EOF as an error, useful for live or endless streams), reconnect_on_network_error (TCP/TLS errors during connection), reconnect_on_http_error (selected HTTP status codes), reconnect_streamed (streamed, non-seekable inputs), reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, reconnect_delay_total_max, and respect_retry_after. Which options exist and how they behave depend on the installed FFmpeg build. See the FFmpeg protocols documentation.

First establish whether the relevant URL is an HTTP input or an RTMP/RTMPS output. HTTP reconnect flags may be relevant to an HTTP source or output when placed in the appropriate protocol context, but their documentation does not show that adding -reconnect 1 will reconnect a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS publisher. If FFmpeg exits, a process supervisor or an intentional retry strategy may be needed; select one based on the actual exit code and logs rather than masking an invalid URL or authentication error.
Check DigitalOcean Cloud Firewall and the Droplet firewall
Cloud and host firewalls are separate. DigitalOcean Cloud Firewalls block traffic not permitted by their rules; if no outbound rules are configured, outbound traffic is not permitted. Host firewall software such as UFW or iptables can impose another policy, and the two layers can conflict. Inspect both, then allow only the outbound destination and protocol/port required by the active YouTube ingest endpoint. Opening unrelated inbound ports will not repair an outbound publishing connection.

- In the DigitalOcean control panel, inspect the Cloud Firewall attached to the Droplet and review its outbound rules. Confirm that the rule set allows the stream’s required traffic.
- On an Ubuntu Droplet using UFW, inspect local rules with
sudo ufw status verbose. - For an iptables-based host policy, inspect rules with
iptables -L. - Compare the cloud and host policies; do not replace a production firewall policy wholesale just to test streaming.
DigitalOcean’s troubleshooting pages explain that Cloud Firewalls and host firewalls are distinct and that missing outbound permission can prevent internet access. See DigitalOcean’s firewall troubleshooting guidance and Cloud Firewall rule configuration.
Check network state and correlate traffic with the drop
DigitalOcean recommends checking interface state with ip -br a and using ping as a reachability diagnostic. Ping uses ICMP, which a Cloud Firewall may block. Therefore, a failed ping alone does not prove that outbound connectivity to YouTube is broken. Pair it with the FFmpeg error and checks aimed at the actual destination and protocol. In DigitalOcean Monitoring, review public outbound bandwidth around the failure time: the Droplet is sending the stream to an external ingest server. The graphs distinguish public and private traffic and inbound and outbound bandwidth. A traffic change can help establish when sending stopped or changed, but it cannot identify the responsible service or prove a root cause. See Droplet metrics documentation.
When Droplet alerts are missing
DigitalOcean Droplet alerts require its metrics agent. DigitalOcean’s support guidance says to allow outbound TCP ports 80 and 443 for the agent to report. That is agent traffic, separate from the FFmpeg stream’s own destination and port; allowing those ports for monitoring does not establish that the YouTube stream is permitted. Prevent avoidable stream interruptions
- Keep a private, redacted copy of the working command and record the installed FFmpeg version when updating the build.
- Keep the YouTube ingest address and stream key current; never expose the key in logs, screenshots, or public support posts.
- Review outbound rules at both the Cloud Firewall and host level after network or firewall changes.
- Use FFmpeg’s own output logs and time-correlated metrics to investigate a drop before adding retries; retries cannot correct a wrong endpoint or blocked egress.
- If the stream carries third-party material, verify that you have the necessary rights. YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies are separate from connection reliability; a technically stable stream is not permission to rebroadcast content.
