Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To fix intermittent FFmpeg disconnects, first determine whether FFmpeg exits, its input stalls, the output connection fails, or YouTube stops receiving a healthy feed while FFmpeg keeps running. Compare timestamped FFmpeg stderr with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status, then check the ingest URL and RTMPS settings, OCI network controls and connection-tracking metrics, and the stream’s sustained upload and encoder settings. The symptoms alone do not identify a single cause.
Diagnose the disconnect before changing settings
Record one failure carefully before restarting or reconfiguring the stream. A timestamped error and the process state help distinguish an input problem from an encoder, network, or ingest problem.
- Save the exact FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key. Record the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, input type, and UTC time of each incident.
- Capture the complete FFmpeg stderr output around the disconnect. Note whether the process exits, remains running without progress, or reports an output/socket or TLS error.
- At the same time, check the event’s status and stream-health information in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event: YouTube Help: Monitor your live stream’s health.
- Keep the stream key private in logs, screenshots, support tickets, and any command you share. If it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room.
Use the evidence to choose a branch rather than assuming every interruption is a network failure:
- FFmpeg exits: inspect the final stderr lines and any service-manager or wrapper logs to find why the process stopped.
- FFmpeg stays alive but input progress stops: investigate the source and input path before changing the YouTube output settings.
- FFmpeg reports an output, socket, timeout, or TLS error: verify the destination URL and protocol, then examine connectivity and OCI policy.
- FFmpeg appears to keep sending but YouTube reports an unhealthy or absent feed: compare the timestamps and health status with output progress, bitrate, and encoder load. A connected process is not proof that YouTube is receiving a usable stream.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and RTMPS setup
Copy the ingest address from YouTube Live Control Room instead of relying on a remembered hostname, an old command, or an RTMP-only URL. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP address may be displayed by default; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL when using RTMPS. If your FFmpeg workflow accepts the stream key separately, enter the URL and key in the format that workflow documents. Do not append or combine them by guesswork. See YouTube Help: Stream using custom settings.

RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS. Google’s ingestion guidance specifies a TLS connection to port 443 and requires the destination hostname for authentication through SNI. A missing or incorrect hostname, wrong protocol, or port mismatch can present as a certificate error or timeout. Google also notes that a timeout after reaching a YouTube server can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.
- Confirm the URL begins with
rtmpsif you intend to use RTMPS, and check that the port and server hostname match the address shown in Control Room. - For a certificate or TLS error, check that the hostname is present so SNI can identify the destination, and inspect the actual URL FFmpeg is using.
- Confirm the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and that its output URL, key/path arrangement, and options follow that build’s documentation. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
When sharing a command for troubleshooting, replace the key with a neutral marker such as [REDACTED]; never post the live key.
Check OCI and Ubuntu network controls separately
Outbound connectivity depends on the path through OCI as well as the Ubuntu guest. Oracle’s VCN troubleshooting guidance identifies instance network security groups (NSGs), subnet security lists, and the operating-system firewall as separate controls. Check all three; an allow rule in one place does not prove end-to-end access.

- Identify the RTMPS hostname and port 443 copied from YouTube Live Control Room.
- Review the instance’s NSG rules, the security lists attached to its subnet, and the route table for the outbound path to that destination.
- Review the Ubuntu firewall separately. Confirm that the configured policies permit outbound TCP/TLS traffic to the endpoint and the associated response traffic.
- Correlate each policy and metric check with the UTC time of a failure, so a transient symptom is not mistaken for a permanent rule problem.
This is an outbound publishing connection, so do not apply an inbound port-opening recipe blindly. The required OCI rules depend on the instance’s VCN, NSGs, subnet security lists, route table, and guest firewall. Oracle’s guidance is at OCI VCN troubleshooting: Connection tracking.

If the network rules appear correct but disconnects are intermittent, inspect connection-tracking metrics for the instance’s attached VNIC and compare their time range with the failure timestamps. Oracle says any nonzero full-table dropped-packet count indicates that the connection-tracking table is full; 100% connection-tracking utilization also indicates a full table. These readings are evidence of a tracking-table condition, not proof that it caused a particular disconnect unless the timing and symptoms match.
Check sustained upload rate and encoder settings
A stream can fail or become unhealthy if its configured output rate exceeds what the path can sustain. Measure upload capacity over a representative period and compare it with the configured bitrate; a brief speed-test peak does not establish that a route can sustain the stream rate. YouTube recommends measuring upload bitrate and choosing quality that is reliable for the available connection. Its current encoder guidance is at YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The following figures are YouTube’s H.264 guidance, not measurements of an OCI route or a guarantee that a VM can sustain that rate. YouTube’s settings page accessed in 2026 lists:
| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For other combinations, consult YouTube’s current table rather than extrapolating. The page has separate recommendations for H.265 and AV1.
Settings to verify
- Protocol: use RTMP or RTMPS as supported by the chosen YouTube ingest address and FFmpeg build.
- Codec and frame rate: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the actual output matches the settings you intend to send.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and specifies no more than four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and 44.1 kHz stereo audio.
Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and sustained outbound-capacity result alongside the logs. A temporary test at a lower bitrate can help determine whether capacity is involved, but it does not by itself prove the root cause.

Choose and validate a recovery strategy
Do not assume that a reconnect option resumes a live stream at exactly the interrupted media position. Recovery depends on the installed FFmpeg version, protocol and muxer path, input source, and how the process is managed. The official FFmpeg protocol documentation describes protocol behavior; it does not establish a version-independent guarantee or a universal YouTube resume command.
- Check the local help and documentation for the installed FFmpeg binary and the specific input, output, and protocol options in use.
- Reproduce a controlled interruption using the real source and endpoint, with stderr and YouTube health status recorded. Confirm whether the process exits, reconnects, stalls, or resumes output.
- If a service manager or wrapper restarts FFmpeg, test that behavior separately. Verify that it does not create duplicate streams, restart rapidly in a loop, or obscure the original error.
- Change one relevant factor at a time and repeat the test. Preserve the before-and-after logs so you can tell whether a change corrected the failure or merely changed its timing.
Common symptoms and what to check next
| Symptom | First checks | What would support the diagnosis |
|---|---|---|
| TLS or certificate error | Copied RTMPS URL, hostname/SNI, port 443, and installed FFmpeg protocol support | The actual command uses the wrong protocol, hostname, port, or a build without the required support. |
| Timeout or output socket error | Ingest URL, route, NSGs, subnet security lists, Ubuntu firewall, and time-correlated VNIC metrics | A mismatch in the destination or a relevant policy/connection-tracking event coincides with the disconnect. |
| FFmpeg remains running but YouTube reports no healthy feed | Output progress, bitrate, encoder load, input progress, and Control Room health timeline | Logs or health status show that data stopped or became unhealthy even though the process remained alive. |
| Intermittent failures with apparently correct rules | VNIC connection-tracking utilization and full-table dropped-packet metrics around incident times | Oracle’s documented full-table indicators occur at the same time as the failures. |
| Frequent restart without stable recovery | Installed FFmpeg options, source behavior, wrapper/service-manager policy, and complete stderr | A test shows repeated restarts, a stalled input, duplicate stream attempts, or an error hidden by the supervisor. |
