If FFmpeg skips a song, first find out whether it is missing from the local playlist or only from YouTube’s live output. A missing local track points toward the playlist, file paths, media compatibility, or timestamps; a track that plays locally but disappears on YouTube points toward stream mapping, FFmpeg output, or YouTube ingest. Changing bitrate or keyframe settings will not repair a broken local playlist.
Find where the track disappears
Test the affected sequence locally before changing the live command. Play the playlist independently, or run a short diagnostic with the same input files and inspect the output. Compare that result with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
- Missing locally: Check the concat list, paths, file readability, stream compatibility, and durations around the transition.
- Present locally, missing live: Check FFmpeg’s output log, selected streams, network or ingest errors, and YouTube’s preview and stream health.
For a useful diagnosis, retain the FFmpeg version, the playlist text with private paths redacted, the command with the stream key removed, the log around the transition, and whether the track is absent during local playback. There is no single cause that can be established from “skipped track” alone.
Check the concat playlist and its paths
The concat demuxer reads a script of files and directives sequentially as one virtual input. In FFmpeg’s description, it demuxes listed files one after another “as if all their packets had been muxed together.” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

- Confirm every intended track appears exactly once and in the intended order. Inspect any script or application that generated the list for omitted or duplicated entries.
- Check spelling, capitalization where relevant, the base directory used to resolve relative paths, and quoting for paths containing spaces or special characters.
- Make sure each listed file exists and can be opened by FFmpeg. Review the log for file-open errors near the point where the sequence jumps.
- Use the concat demuxer’s expected script syntax. If you use
-safe 0to allow paths that FFmpeg otherwise rejects, use it only with a playlist you control and trust; it relaxes path restrictions, not media compatibility checks.
Do not start by adding output recovery flags: they cannot restore a file that the input list omitted or could not open.
Check compatibility at the transition
With stream copy, -c copy passes packets through; it does not make differing media formats compatible. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. Compare the streams of the last track that works and the first track that appears to be skipped, along with the rest of the affected boundary. A short test of those two files using the same command and output settings can narrow the fault without changing the whole playlist.
- If the files have compatible streams and you want to preserve their original packets, stream copy may be suitable.
- If the clips have incompatible stream layouts or need to be normalized, use the concat filter and re-encode to a common output format. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter for cases where re-encoding is required and the concat demuxer as an option when avoiding re-encoding.
Do not assume that a file being playable on its own proves it is compatible with its neighbors in a concatenated stream.

Inspect durations and timestamps
The concat demuxer uses each file’s duration to place the next file’s timestamps. If a duration is wrong or was estimated inaccurately—for example, because of bitrate estimation or a truncated file—the next file can begin at an incorrect timestamp and boundary artifacts may result. Inspect the affected files for unusual metadata, truncation, and duration differences.

The concat script’s duration directive can override a stored duration. Use it only when you know the correct duration; guessing can shift timestamps further rather than fix them. If the log points to timestamp processing at a boundary, investigate the duration and file metadata before changing live encoder settings.
Verify that FFmpeg selects the intended audio and video
FFmpeg normally selects streams automatically according to output-format eligibility and its selection rules. The CLI’s -map option lets you specify which input streams should be sent to the output. Review the input stream listing and output mapping when the output lacks audio, contains an unexpected stream, or behaves differently from local playback. Confirm that the resulting output actually contains the intended audio before attributing silence or an absent track to YouTube. Never publish or share a real YouTube stream key in a command, log, screenshot, or support request; redact it first.
Separate local playlist faults from live-stream faults
If the sequence plays correctly locally, check FFmpeg’s log for output or network errors and compare the outgoing stream with YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and video, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health.

For audio, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended advanced settings for stereo, and 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a substitute for checking whether FFmpeg is reading and sending the intended audio stream.
Use recovery options only for output interruptions
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has network-output recovery controls including attempt_recovery and recovery_wait_time. They address output continuity after an output error; they do not fix a missing playlist entry, an unreadable source, or incompatible files. The FFmpeg documentation also notes that dropping packets on overflow lets processing continue at the cost of omitting part of the stream. Packet dropping is therefore not a lossless way to fix skipped tracks.
A practical troubleshooting order
- Play or inspect the source sequence locally and compare it with YouTube’s preview to locate where the loss occurs.
- Audit the playlist order, entries, paths, quoting, and file readability. Check whether a list-generation process omitted the track.
- Compare the affected files’ streams, codecs, time bases, and durations. Test the last working file and first apparently skipped file with the same command and output settings.
- Investigate duration metadata, truncation, and timestamp messages at the transition. Override a duration only when its correct value is known.
- Check FFmpeg’s input stream listing and output mapping; explicitly map the intended audio and video streams when automatic selection is unsuitable.
- If local playback is correct, inspect the FFmpeg output and network log, then check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages against its current encoder guidance.
Keep the log from the test. It can distinguish an input-open failure, timestamp problem, excluded stream, and failed output connection—different problems that can look like the same skipped song to a viewer.
