Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf FFmpeg audio is out of sync on an EC2 YouTube livestream, first determine whether the mismatch is a fixed offset or grows over time—and whether it is already present in the encoded output or appears only in YouTube playback. A measured, constant offset may justify adjusting input timing; progressive drift calls for investigating timestamps, frame-rate behavior, or separate source clocks. There is no universal FFmpeg command that safely fixes every case.
First identify what “out of sync” means
Compare a short sample near the start of the stream with one later. Listen for a clear event that should line up with visible action, such as a clap or a spoken word matching lip movement. Note which comes first and estimate the offset at both points.
| What you observe | What to investigate first |
|---|---|
| The same audio lead or lag is present from the start and remains roughly constant. | Initial timestamps, input start times, or a fixed processing delay. A measured fixed offset may be compensated; do not assume it explains a changing mismatch. |
| The error gets larger or smaller as the stream runs. | Ongoing timestamp or rate mismatch, including separate audio and video clocks, frame-rate behavior, or source timing. |
| A local encoded recording looks synchronized, but YouTube playback does not. | Compare controlled playback samples and YouTube stream health before changing FFmpeg timing. The issue may be in the contribution, ingest, or viewer playback path. |
| Only some viewers report a delay, or the symptom varies with playback conditions. | Check latency mode, buffering, and network conditions. Viewer delay is not necessarily an audio-versus-video synchronization error. |
This is a diagnostic framework, not a claim that EC2 itself causes a particular type of sync error. The available information does not identify an EC2 instance type, operating system, FFmpeg build, input topology, command line, or measured offset.
Collect evidence before changing the command
Save the exact command and record the details below. Without them, a recommendation to add an offset or change a synchronization mode would be guesswork.

For guidance on FFmpeg timing and output options, consult the FFmpeg documentation. The actual result also depends on the inputs and muxer, so a command fragment should not be treated as a drop-in repair.
Use FFmpeg timing controls only for the problem they address
-itsoffset: a possible adjustment for a measured fixed offset
FFmpeg documents -itsoffset as an input time offset. It can be considered when measurements show a constant lead or lag and you have identified which input needs adjustment. Confirm the direction and size of the offset in the resulting output. An initial offset does not, by itself, correct progressive drift.
-fps_mode: understand what happens to video timestamps and frames
-fps_mode applies per output video stream. In the FFmpeg manual, passthrough retains demuxer timestamps; cfr duplicates or drops frames to reach a target constant frame rate; vfr passes timestamps or drops frames to avoid duplicate timestamps; and auto selects based on muxer capability. The muxer may modify timestamps later. Check whether the input timing and intended output frame rate make a given mode appropriate before changing it.

-copyts: preserving timestamps can preserve a source problem
-copyts retains input timestamp values rather than applying FFmpeg’s normal sanitizing behavior. That can be useful when preserving valid timing matters, but it can also carry an existing timestamp problem into the output. Compare timestamps and output behavior before using it as a proposed fix.
-re and -readrate: do not throttle a live capture reflexively
FFmpeg describes -re (or -readrate 1) as reading input at its native frame rate, a control useful when managing input flow for live output. Its manual warns against using a low read rate on actual capture devices or live streams because packets may be lost. Determine whether the input is a file being paced or a real-time capture/live source before applying a read-rate option.
Check YouTube compatibility settings without mistaking them for a sync repair
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. Its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1 audio, with 128 kbps stereo or 384 kbps 5.1 audio. These are contribution compatibility recommendations; they do not diagnose or automatically correct audio/video timestamp errors.

YouTube advises testing before an event with audio and movement similar to the real stream, then monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Use that check to see whether the contribution is behaving as expected, not as a substitute for comparing synchronized local and YouTube samples.
If using RTMPS, verify the connection details separately
For YouTube RTMPS ingest, check that the scheme is rtmps, the ingestion endpoint and path are correct, the connection uses port 443, and the server hostname is supplied in TLS SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide, last updated 2026-09-14 UTC, associates SSL errors and timeouts with checking the protocol, port, hostname/SNI, and TLS setup. These checks address connection problems; they are not an audio-sync remedy.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Separate viewer latency from audio/video sync
Latency describes how far playback trails the live event; A/V sync describes whether audio and video line up with each other. YouTube explains that lower latency means less read-ahead buffering, so viewers may notice encoder or player issues more readily. Congestion and other factors can delay a stream even when average network capacity seems adequate. Check YouTube stream health and compare controlled samples before changing timestamps to treat a symptom that may actually be buffering or viewer latency.

YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience latency under 10 seconds and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams under 5 seconds; ultra-low latency carries increased buffering risk. Those service-level descriptions are not acceptable A/V-sync tolerances and do not guarantee the experience of every viewer. See YouTube’s latency guidance.
Why the EC2 label is not a diagnosis
A cloud-hosted FFmpeg contribution workflow is an established pattern: AWS documents an FFmpeg RTMP workflow with AWS Media Services, and its IVS guide includes an FFmpeg streaming example. Neither source prescribes an EC2-to-YouTube sync fix or establishes that a particular instance clock, CPU, network, or platform component caused this symptom. See the AWS FFmpeg/RTMP workflow and AWS IVS setup guide.

Audio is already late or early in a local encoded output
- Compare the measured offset at the start and later in the sample. If it stays constant, inspect input start times and timestamp origins before considering a fixed offset adjustment.
- If the mismatch grows, inspect whether audio and video are separate inputs, whether they use independent clocks, and how their timestamps progress. Do not use a one-time offset as a presumed drift correction.
- Review the stream mapping and frame-rate mode to confirm the expected audio and video streams are being output with appropriate timing.
Local output is synchronized, but YouTube playback appears wrong
- Compare samples of the same moment and determine whether the problem affects audio-to-video alignment or simply how late playback begins.
- Check YouTube stream health and encoder messages. If the issue is connection-related, verify RTMPS protocol, endpoint and path, port 443, and TLS SNI as applicable.
- Compare more than one viewer or playback condition before attributing the symptom to FFmpeg timestamps.
Audio and video come from separate inputs
Check each input’s timestamp origin and behavior. A historical FFmpeg-user mailing-list post describes about half a second of audio delay after argument order changed in a webcam-plus-PulseAudio setup using Ubuntu 20.04 and FFmpeg 4.3.1. It is one anecdotal report—not proof that argument order generally causes desynchronization, and not evidence about EC2. See the mailing-list report.
