What Exit Code 1 and Exit Code -1 mean
Both codes are final process statuses. They do not identify one universal fault:

For example, Exit Code -1 can appear with java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, a mod-loader dependency error, an OpenGL initialization failure, or an invalid resource-pack shader. The practical fix is therefore: find the exception, isolate whether the problem is vanilla or modified, then repair that component.

1. Read the newest crash report or log
On the standard Java Edition installation, crash reports are stored in:
- Windows:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\crash-reports - macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/crash-reports/ - Linux:
~/.minecraft/crash-reports/
The newest file normally looks like crash-YYYY-MM-DD_HH.MM.SS-client.txt. XMCL troubleshooting guide
Open it in Notepad, TextEdit, or another plain-text editor. Search for the first occurrence of terms such as:
java.lang.OutOfMemoryErrorGLFW,OpenGL, orPixel format not acceleratedUnsatisfiedLinkErrorMixin,mod,dependency, or a loader-specific errorshader,resource pack, orfailed to load
Use the first meaningful exception and its stack trace, not the last line containing the exit code. If no file exists in crash-reports, check the game and launcher logs. A failed launch does not always produce a formal crash report. Minecraft Forum discussion of crashes without a report
2. Test the same version with a clean launcher installation
This is a safe, high-value test that does not require deleting your existing game data. Mojang recommends creating a separate installation and comparing settings such as resolution and JVM arguments if it launches successfully. Minecraft Launcher launch troubleshooting

- Open Minecraft Launcher.
- Select Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Open Installations.
- Select New installation.
- Give it a name such as
Vanilla test. - Choose the same Minecraft version as the world or installation that crashes. Do not switch versions while diagnosing a version-specific problem.
- Optionally clear Launch after Install, then select Install.
- Launch the new installation before adding mods, shaders, resource packs, or custom JVM arguments.
If the clean installation launches, investigate the original installation’s downloaded mods, resource packs, shaders, resolution, and JVM arguments before reinstalling anything. This test is not the same as deleting the entire .minecraft folder, which can remove worlds, screenshots, resource packs, options, logs, and modded installations. 3. Remove mods and verify the mod loader
If vanilla launches but Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, or another modded profile crashes, treat the modded profile as the problem area. Mods, loader, dependencies, Minecraft version, and the profile’s Java runtime need to be compatible. XMCL troubleshooting guide
- Close Minecraft and the launcher.
- Open the profile’s game directory. In the standard setup it is
%APPDATA%\.minecrafton Windows, but a launcher or installation may use a custom directory. - Temporarily move the contents of the
modsfolder to a separate backup folder. - Launch the same loader and Minecraft version with no mods.
- If it works, add the mods back in small groups until you identify the failing group.
Check the suspected mod’s download page for the exact Minecraft version, correct loader, required dependencies and compatible versions, Java requirements, and whether it is client-side, server-side, or needed on both sides. A loader error naming a missing dependency is more useful than the exit code. Install dependencies only from a trustworthy source and match their versions to the loader and Minecraft version. 4. Disable shaders and resource packs
A bad resource pack or shader can crash Minecraft while it loads assets, sometimes before the title screen appears. Temporarily move or rename these standard Windows folders:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\resourcepacks%APPDATA%\.minecraft\shaderpacks
Move files elsewhere rather than deleting them. If the game starts, restore packs one at a time. A shader may be incompatible with the Minecraft version, graphics API, loader, or GPU. Minecraft 1.21.8 had a documented issue in which an invalid shader in a resource pack could crash resource loading on some AMD graphics hardware; that is a specific compatibility bug, not evidence that every AMD card needs a driver replacement. 5. Fix graphics and OpenGL errors
Messages such as GLFW error 65542: WGL: The driver does not seem to support OpenGL or Pixel format not accelerated point toward graphics initialization, hardware acceleration, or the graphics driver—not automatically toward Java. XMCL troubleshooting guide
- Install the latest graphics driver from Intel, AMD, or NVIDIA, or from your computer manufacturer’s support page if it supplies customized drivers.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- If you use a laptop, set the launcher and
javaw.exeto use the intended dedicated GPU through the manufacturer’s graphics settings. - Remove shader packs and custom resource packs before testing again.
- Undo GPU overclocks and test without recording, monitoring, or tuning-software overlays.
Minecraft 1.21.8 included fixes for freezes, texture corruption, flickering, lighting, and inventory-rendering problems on certain Intel Gen11 devices. If the report contains java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, memory allocation is a relevant lead. If it does not, increasing RAM is not a general Exit Code 1 or -1 fix. XMCL troubleshooting guide
In the launcher, open Installations, select the affected profile, choose Edit, expand More Options, and inspect JVM Arguments. Compare them with the defaults in a newly created installation. An excessively large custom -Xmx value can prevent startup if it exceeds available system memory, while too little heap can crash a large modpack. 7. Stop manually replacing Java unless you have a specific reason
The official Minecraft Launcher provides a managed Java runtime for supported Java Edition installations. Normal launcher users do not need to install the newest Java separately or point Minecraft at a random java.exe. Manually changing the executable can introduce version and path conflicts. To check a custom runtime, open the affected installation’s Edit screen, expand More Options, and inspect the Java executable field. If it was manually changed, first test with the launcher’s default runtime or with a fresh installation. Manually selecting Java is appropriate only when the specific loader or modpack documents that requirement.

For the current normal Java Edition release identified in this research, choose Latest Release in the launcher; the official release page is Minecraft Java Edition 26.1.1 Hotfix. For a modded world, do not automatically move to the latest release. Mods and loaders often target a specific Minecraft version. Select the version required by the modpack and keep the world’s version consistent. Back up a world before opening it in a newer release.
9. Distinguish a launcher crash from a game crash
If the launcher itself freezes or closes before you select Play, that is a Windows launcher problem rather than a game-process Exit Code 1 or -1 problem. - Do not assume Exit Code 1 means Java is outdated.
- Do not assume Exit Code -1 means the graphics driver is outdated.

.minecraftbefore backing up worlds and testing a separate installation. - Do not increase
-Xmxunless the log indicates a memory problem.
