If your Pixel started sounding muffled, crackly, or distorted immediately after you changed an audio setting, start with the reversible fix: open Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound, turn Adaptive Sound off, restart the phone, and test several songs or videos. Adaptive Sound processes the Pixel’s built-in speaker output; it is not a master volume control and does not change audio from headphones or external speakers.
If switching it off does not help, the pattern of the problem matters more than the loudness. Testing multiple apps, checking Bluetooth and call routing, inspecting the speaker openings and USB-C port, and trying another pair of headphones can separate a bad recording or accessory from a phone-wide fault. Use the checks below in that order so you do not erase data or arrange a repair before basic causes are ruled out.
Start with the setting you changed
When the symptom and a settings change line up in time, undo that change before doing anything destructive. For the common Pixel case, go to Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound, switch it off, then play audio through the phone’s own speaker. Adaptive Sound adjusts speaker output to fit the environment without changing the volume, according to Google Pixel Help. Because it affects the built-in speaker path, turning it off will not change what you hear through Bluetooth, USB-C, or other external headphones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteListen to the same clip before and after the toggle at a moderate volume. A real improvement points to the processing setting as the trigger, but it does not prove that Adaptive Sound is the only possible cause. If there is no change, leave the setting off while you continue testing; that gives you a stable baseline.

If you changed another control
Return any recently changed accessibility, audio-balance, or output control to its previous value and test again. Make one change at a time. Changing several controls together makes it impossible to tell which one altered the result, and a setting that improves one output path may not affect another.
Classify the distortion before troubleshooting further
Write down where the fault occurs, how broadly it occurs, and when it began. This quick classification determines the safest next test.
| What you observe | Most useful interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only the built-in speaker sounds muffled | Speaker processing, an obstruction, or speaker hardware is more likely than an app-wide problem. | Adaptive Sound toggle, case/protector removal, and gentle speaker inspection. |
| Only Bluetooth audio is distorted | The wireless route, connected device, or Bluetooth state may be involved. | Turn Bluetooth off, test the Pixel speaker, then reconnect and compare. |
| Only wired or USB-C headphones are affected | The headphones, plug, adapter, or USB-C port may be responsible. | Disconnect them and test the speaker; then try another pair. |
| Only calls are affected | A call route, microphone, network, or speakerphone path may be involved. | Toggle speakerphone and switch Wi-Fi on or off for the call. |
| Only one app or one recording is distorted | The file may be damaged or the app may be producing the bad stream. | Play different content in two or three other apps. |
| Every source is distorted everywhere | A phone-wide software or hardware fault is more plausible. | Complete the ordinary checks, then contact Pixel support. |
| The problem began immediately after a setting change | The changed control is a high-value, reversible suspect. | Undo it and restart before cleaning, resetting, or repairing. |
This distinction prevents a common mistake: treating a broken recording as evidence that the phone’s speaker has failed, or buying a new headset when the speaker itself is the only affected output.

Follow this troubleshooting sequence
1. Reverse the recent change and establish a baseline
- Open Settings > Sound & vibration > Adaptive Sound.
- Turn Adaptive Sound off.
- Set the volume to a comfortable middle level rather than maximum.
- Play a familiar song or video through the built-in speaker and note whether voices, bass, or high frequencies still sound wrong.
- If you changed a different audio or accessibility control, restore that control to its earlier value and repeat the same test.
Do not judge the result from a single notification tone. Use a longer piece of speech and music because distortion can be obvious in one frequency range but not another. Also test without headphones: Adaptive Sound is a speaker-output feature, so a headphone test cannot confirm whether it is involved.
2. Restart the Pixel and cross-test several sources
Restart the phone after the setting change. A restart reloads the audio services and clears a temporary routing state without deleting your data.
- Restart the Pixel using the normal power menu.
- After it starts, play two or three different songs or videos.
- Use at least two separate apps and, when possible, content from different providers or files.
- Compare the built-in speaker with the same content through another output path.
If only one file sounds distorted, that file could be broken. Google Pixel Help specifically notes that some distorted sounds can be caused by damaged sound files. If every source remains distorted after cross-testing, the issue is broader than one recording and merits the connection, physical, and support checks below.

3. Check routing, volume, and connections
Audio can be sent to a different device or call path than you expect. Perform these checks separately so you know which change affects the symptom.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match- Bluetooth: Turn Bluetooth off completely, then play audio through the Pixel speaker. If the speaker is clear with Bluetooth off, reconnect the accessory and compare; the wireless device or route is then a stronger suspect than the phone speaker.
- Volume: Raise and lower the volume. If distortion appears only at the highest levels, use a lower level while you continue testing; do not assume maximum volume is a valid diagnostic reference.
- Calls: During a call, toggle speakerphone. If the sound changes, the earpiece and speakerphone paths are behaving differently.
- Wi-Fi calling or network path: For a call that sounds distorted, switch Wi-Fi on or off and place another test call. A change in call quality points toward the connection path rather than stored media playback.
These tests do not repair a failing component by themselves. They identify whether the fault follows the Pixel, the connected accessory, or the call route.
4. Remove cases and inspect the openings
A case, screen protector, lint, or debris can partially cover an opening and make a clear signal sound muffled. Turn the phone off or keep playback stopped while inspecting it.

- Remove the case and any protector that could overlap the speaker or microphone openings.
- Look at the speaker openings, microphones, and USB-C port under good light.
- Gently wipe the accessible surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Do not push material into an opening. Stop if debris is lodged where you cannot reach it safely.
- Re-test the same audio clip with the case removed, then replace the case only after the result is clear.
Google recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning Pixel speakers, microphones, and the USB-C port. Cleaning can remove an external obstruction; it cannot repair internal speaker damage, so persistent distortion after a careful inspection still needs escalation.
5. Isolate headphones and adapters
Disconnect every wired or wireless headset and listen through the phone. Then try a different pair if one is available.
- Unplug USB-C headphones or an adapter, or disconnect the Bluetooth headset.
- Turn Bluetooth off and play the same content through the built-in speaker.
- If the speaker is clear, connect the original headphones and test again.
- Try a second pair of headphones to compare the accessory path.
If only the first pair is distorted, the comparison implicates that headset, its cable, adapter, or connector. A second pair is a diagnostic comparison, not proof that the Pixel has been repaired. Google says headphones certified as Made for Google or Made by Google are designed to work with Pixel phones, but certification does not make any accessory immune to damage or incompatibility.

6. Use app-specific and call-specific branches
Only one app or file is affected
Play a different recording in the same app, then play the original recording in another app if possible. If the problem follows one file, treat the file as suspect. If it stays with one app while other apps are clear, the app’s playback path is the likely boundary of the problem; update or reinstalling it can be considered after the phone-wide checks, but do not mistake an app symptom for a speaker failure.
Only calls are affected
Make a short test call, toggle speakerphone, and switch Wi-Fi on or off. Compare an ordinary cellular call with another call method only if that option is available to you. If saved music and video are clear while calls remain distorted, focus on the call route and contact support if the behavior persists rather than repeatedly changing media settings.
Only the built-in speaker is affected
Keep Bluetooth and headphones disconnected while you test. If the phone speaker remains muffled after Adaptive Sound is off, the case is removed, and the openings are clean, the remaining possibilities include a speaker component fault or a software problem limited to that output path.

What not to do first
- Do not factory-reset the phone as the opening move. Google lists a factory reset as advanced troubleshooting. It erases local data and requires setup again, so back up your information and use it only after ordinary checks and support guidance.
- Do not assume Adaptive Sound controls every output. It changes the built-in speaker output, not headphones or external speakers.
- Do not keep forcing volume higher. Maximum volume can make any weakness or clipping harder to interpret and can risk hearing damage.
- Do not push cloth, picks, or other material into the speaker or USB-C port. Google’s documented cleaning approach is a gentle wipe with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Do not buy an accessory before isolating the path. Trying another pair can identify a bad headset, but purchasing one is not required to complete the diagnosis.
When a factory reset or repair is justified
A reset is a last-resort software step, not a routine audio toggle. Consider it only when the distortion affects every source, the reversible settings and restart made no difference, connections and accessories have been ruled out, the openings are unobstructed, and Pixel support recommends it. Before resetting, back up photos, messages, authenticator data, and any files stored only on the phone; make sure you know the Google Account credentials needed to set the device up again.
If all sounds remain distorted after the ordinary sequence, contact Pixel support. Google’s guidance is direct: when all sounds are distorted, contact Pixel support. Provide the support representative with the pattern you recorded—speaker versus headphones, media versus calls, one app versus every app, and whether the issue began after a setting change. Those details are more useful than simply reporting that the phone sounds bad.
A compact decision checklist
- Started after a setting change? Turn Adaptive Sound off or undo the specific change.
- Still present? Restart the Pixel and test several files in multiple apps.
- Only one file or app? Treat the content or app as the boundary, not the whole phone.
- Only Bluetooth, wired headphones, or calls? Check the corresponding route and compare another output.
- Speaker only? Remove the case or protector and gently wipe the speaker, microphones, and USB-C port with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Every source still distorted? Stop repeating toggles, back up data, and contact Pixel support; discuss a factory reset only as an advanced step.
How to describe the fault to support
Before contacting support, note the Pixel model and Android version if readily available, the setting you changed, the time the symptom began, and the exact outputs affected. State whether the sound is muffled, crackling, buzzing, or cutting out; whether it changes with volume; and whether Bluetooth, headphones, calls, and saved media behave differently. Mention that you restarted, cross-tested multiple apps, checked routing, removed the case, inspected the openings, and tried another pair of headphones when applicable. A concise, reproducible description helps support distinguish a damaged file from a phone-wide audio fault without asking you to repeat every basic test.
