If Ventoy can start a Windows VHD/VHDX but VeraCrypt never shows its pre-boot password prompt, the cause may be a documented VeraCrypt limitation—not a bad password or a Ventoy setting. VeraCrypt says it does not support pre-boot authentication for operating systems installed in VHD/VHDX files when they are booted natively. Ventoy’s VHD plugin can boot Windows VHD(X) files, but that support does not make VeraCrypt’s pre-boot authentication work for a native-boot encrypted VHD.
First identify which boot stage is failing
“Booting a VeraCrypt-encrypted Windows VHD” can describe different setups. The key distinction is whether you are booting a Windows installation inside a VHD/VHDX natively, booting a Windows installation ISO, or starting the VHD as a virtual machine. VeraCrypt’s stated restriction concerns pre-boot authentication for an operating system installed inside a VHD/VHDX; its documentation names appropriate virtual-machine software, such as Microsoft Virtual PC, as an exception. It also says native-boot VHD/VHDX files remain subject to the restriction. See VeraCrypt’s Known Issues & Limitations.
- Before the Ventoy menu: investigate USB boot selection, firmware mode, or Secure Boot.
- VHD missing from Ventoy or failing during handoff: check the plugin location, filesystem, and possible boot-manager compatibility.
- Windows begins to start but the VeraCrypt prompt is missing or unusable: compare the setup with VeraCrypt’s VHD/VHDX limitation before changing unrelated Ventoy settings.
Check the Ventoy VHD plugin setup
Ventoy’s Windows VHD Boot Plugin documentation says it supports Windows 7 and later in VHD(X) files, Legacy BIOS and UEFI, and both fixed and dynamic VHD(X). Those are Ventoy boot capabilities; they do not override VeraCrypt’s separate pre-boot authentication restriction.
- Download Ventoy’s
ventoy_vhdboot.imgplugin image as directed by the official plugin page. - Place it in the
/ventoy/directory on the Ventoy data partition. Create that directory if needed. Do not place the image in the small VTOYEFI partition. - Check the filesystem of the partition storing the VHD(X). Ventoy specifies NTFS for Windows 10 version 1803 and earlier. For Windows 10 version 1809 and later, it lists NTFS or exFAT.
- Confirm the VHD(X) file is on the Ventoy data partition and visible in Ventoy’s menu.
Ventoy notes that boot-manager compatibility can vary and that different versions of ventoy_vhdboot.img are available to test. Its documentation does not identify one image version as correct for every setup. If you test another version, record the Ventoy release, Windows version, firmware mode, and exact error so you can compare results.

Troubleshoot by symptom
The VHD does not appear in Ventoy
- Verify that the VHD(X) is stored on the Ventoy data partition and that the file is visible there.
- Confirm
ventoy_vhdboot.imgis in the data partition’s/ventoy/directory, not VTOYEFI. - Check the partition format against the Windows 10 version conditions above.
The machine fails before Ventoy starts or Secure Boot enrollment errors appear
This points to a firmware or Ventoy Secure Boot stage, not VeraCrypt authentication inside Windows. Follow Ventoy’s Secure Boot instructions for the machine. Ventoy says enrollment behavior varies by machine; if the expected enrollment flow fails, its guidance may require turning off Ventoy’s Secure Boot option and disabling Secure Boot in firmware. That may address a firmware handoff problem, but it does not remove VeraCrypt’s VHD/VHDX limitation.
Ventoy starts the VHD, but Windows fails during boot-manager handoff
Ventoy acknowledges that boot-manager compatibility can be an issue with the VHD plugin. Check the plugin documentation and, if appropriate, test another available plugin image version. A plugin-version test is relevant to the VHD handoff stage; it is not evidence that native-boot VeraCrypt pre-boot authentication is supported.

The VeraCrypt pre-boot prompt is absent for a native-boot VHD
Check whether Windows is installed inside a VHD/VHDX and booted natively. VeraCrypt explicitly says it does not support pre-boot authentication for that arrangement. Its System Encryption documentation describes pre-boot authentication as entering the correct password before Windows boots, and documents EFI system encryption for the Windows system partition. Changing USB media, the Ventoy plugin image, or Secure Boot settings should not be presented as a way to make the unsupported VHD authentication path work.
A Windows ISO fails to boot
WIMBOOT is a separate option for troubleshooting official Windows ISO files and some WinPE ISO files when Ventoy’s default ISO boot has problems. Ventoy does not describe it as a fix for VeraCrypt-encrypted VHD authentication. See Ventoy’s WIMBOOT documentation.

An image fails to boot for an unclear reason
For a general image-boot failure, Ventoy’s FAQ recommends checking that the image file is not corrupted. This is a basic integrity check, not a workaround for VeraCrypt’s documented limitation.

- Whether you are booting the VHD natively, booting a Windows ISO, or launching the VHD in virtual-machine software.

- The last screen or message reached: before Ventoy, at VHD selection, during handoff, or at the expected VeraCrypt prompt.
