For several promo clips, put them in one OBS VLC Video source as an ordered playlist, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed sequence. For one clip that should repeat, use a Media Source and enable Loop. Then check what OBS does when playback ends, whether the source is being hidden or restarted, and whether another scene layer covers it.
Choose the right OBS source for your loop
| Workflow | Best fit | What to set or consider |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One promo repeated | Enable Loop and inspect the end-of-playback visibility setting. |
| VLC Video | Several promos played in sequence | Add the files as a playlist, enable Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed order. VLC must be installed. |
| Preassembled continuous video | A timeline where transitions are authored into the edit | This is an editorial workflow option, not a documented OBS guarantee of gapless playback. |
OBS documents VLC Video as the playlist source and Media Source as the single-media source. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide. That page displays a date of 2022-01-11; labels or behavior may change, so verify the controls in your installed version.
Set up several clips as one VLC playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to be available; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene that should show the promos.
- Add each promo file to that source’s playlist in the order you want viewers to see them. Confirm every intended file is present.
- Turn on Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if the sequence should stay fixed.
- Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents the default as Stop when not visible, restart when visible. If your scene switches or source visibility changes, determine whether that behavior is interrupting and restarting playback.
Set up one clip to repeat
- Add the clip as an OBS Media Source.
- Enable Loop; OBS documents this option as off by default.
- Inspect Show nothing when playback ends. OBS documents this option as on by default and says it automatically hides the source when the file ends. If the clip is meant to remain visible and repeat, make sure its end behavior is consistent with that goal.
A single Media Source is not the playlist control for advancing through multiple promo files. If the stream needs to cycle among several files, use VLC Video with a playlist.
Find what is causing the black gap
- Identify the source type. Confirm whether the scene uses one Media Source or a VLC Video playlist. With VLC Video, check that each promo is actually in the playlist.
- Check end-of-file behavior. For one repeating clip, verify Loop. For several files, use the playlist workflow rather than expecting a single Media Source to advance among files.
- Check visibility and restart behavior. See whether a scene change or visibility toggle stops playback. A 2020 OBS forum discussion concerned black frames while fading between scenes with IP camera sources; a participant suggested that restarting playback when a source becomes active could expose a frame before rendering, and the original poster said disabling that setting helped in that case. That example is not proof that restart behavior causes gaps in local promo playlists, but it makes the setting worth checking when visibility changes coincide with the gap. See the OBS forum discussion.
- Inspect the scene’s layer order. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above lower ones. Move or hide any opaque source that may cover the video. See the OBS Project’s Sources guide, which displays a date of 2022-01-11.
- Test the transition and complete cycle. Record locally or preview privately through several clip changes and one full playlist cycle before going live. OBS’s OBS Studio Overview Guide recommends testing settings and stream behavior before the first live stream.
If the gap remains
Check the affected files and playback conditions clip by clip. OBS documentation describes the available controls but does not establish frame-accurate, gapless transitions for every combination of file format, codec, frame rate, and computer. If continuity is essential, one reasonable workflow is to edit the promos and transitions into a single continuous video; that is an editorial option, not a tested or guaranteed OBS fix.
