Start by checking OBS Stats: rising dropped frames usually point to the connection to YouTube, while rendering or encoding lag points to local computer workload. If those counters stay healthy, investigate playlist playback, audio routing, or buffering on viewers’ devices. Identify which layer is failing before changing settings; an audio delay or faster hardware will not fix every kind of stutter.

1. Identify where the stutter starts

In OBS, open View > Stats and note whether dropped frames are increasing, whether rendering or encoding lag is reported, and whether the connection indicator changes. Also note where the symptom appears: in the OBS preview, in the stream recording or playback, or only on viewers’ devices. Make one change at a time and compare the same counters or test segment.

  • Dropped frames: OBS describes these as a connection problem: the route to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate, so frames are discarded to compensate.
  • Rendering or encoding lag: These indicate local resource pressure, not the same network issue as dropped frames.
  • Irregular playlist audio or video with healthy stats: Check the source, media files, and audio path.
  • Viewer buffering while OBS counters look healthy: Test the viewer’s device and connection; a broadcaster’s healthy output does not guarantee every viewer’s playback path is healthy.

OBS explains the distinctions in its connection troubleshooting guide, encoding performance guide, and viewer buffering guide.

2. Check the playlist source and files

Confirm which OBS source is playing the playlist

OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlists. It requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. In OBS, add it from Sources > + > VLC Video Source, then configure the playlist and its playback options. The source includes loop-playlist, shuffle, visibility behavior, and a network-caching setting.

The ordinary Media Source accepts individual media files and has a loop option, but it is not the documented playlist source. OBS recommends Media Source or VLC Source for audio/video files as a way to reduce unnecessary scene workload. These differences do not mean VLC will be smoother in every setup: test with the actual playlist files and watch whether playback or OBS’s local performance indicators change. See OBS’s media sources guide.

Test the media independently

Play the affected files outside OBS and check whether the same section stutters. If it does, the issue may be in the media file or its playback dependency rather than the stream connection. If it plays smoothly outside OBS, test the same segment in a simple OBS scene containing only the playlist source. Do not change VLC’s cache by guesswork: the available guidance does not establish one cache value that fixes every setup.

3. Fix local rendering or encoding overload

If OBS reports rendering or encoding lag, reduce local work before changing network settings. Simplify the scene and remove expensive sources or filters that are not needed. Browser sources can add workload; use fewer of them where possible. Test the playlist in a simple scene and compare the same OBS indicators.

Lower output workload if simplifying is not enough

Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce work. OBS specifically notes that moving from 60 fps to 30 fps can reduce the load. Make one adjustment at a time so you can tell whether the change helped; lower resolution or frame rate can affect the delivered picture and motion.

Windows: try running OBS as administrator

OBS lists running the application as administrator as a quick fix to try on Windows. Recheck the same lag indicators after the change. This is not a remedy for dropped frames caused by an unstable connection.

4. Fix rising dropped frames and connection instability

If dropped frames are increasing, investigate the connection from your computer to YouTube’s ingest server. OBS recommends lowering the bitrate, trying another streaming server, and checking for VPNs, security software, network utilities, drivers, or hardware that may interfere with the route. Its guide offers about 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate, but that is not a guarantee of stable capacity: upload speed can fluctuate, and platform limits still apply.

Test Wi-Fi and wired networking

OBS notes that Wi-Fi may be unstable and recommends testing a wired connection. An Ethernet cable is useful for this network branch if you suspect Wi-Fi; it will not resolve local rendering or encoding lag. Compare dropped-frame behavior under the same stream conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce bitrate carefully

Lowering bitrate can help when the available upload capacity cannot reliably sustain the configured rate. The trade-off is reduced streaming quality. Check the bitrate against YouTube’s recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than assuming one number suits every stream. OBS’s dropped frames guide covers connection troubleshooting.

5. Check YouTube’s ingest settings and stream health

Before a real stream, test with audio and video motion similar to what you plan to broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages it displays. YouTube’s current guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by codec and output format.

Example format YouTube published bitrate recommendation
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a promise that a particular internet connection can sustain them. The table gives examples, not every resolution and codec combination; consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the full recommendations. YouTube also says it automatically transcodes live streams into different viewer formats.

6. Isolate audio stutter without guessing at sync delay

Watch the OBS audio meter for the playlist source while the affected section plays. Use monitoring to listen as early as possible in the source path, then listen again through OBS monitoring. If the sound is already irregular at the source, investigate the media or playback path; if it changes later, trace the route through OBS. OBS’s audio monitoring guide explains monitoring options.

YouTube’s live guidance recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 48 kHz for 5.1. Those recommendations do not establish that a sample-rate mismatch is causing a particular stutter. Avoid applying an arbitrary sync offset: measure where audio and video diverge first, then adjust only if you have evidence of a consistent timing difference.

7. If only viewers report buffering

First check that OBS’s outgoing counters are healthy. Then ask affected viewers to compare playback on another device or internet connection. OBS notes that viewers have different devices and network access; a stream that is stable at the broadcaster’s end can still buffer for an individual viewer. YouTube’s transcoding gives viewers different formats, but does not eliminate device or connection limitations. Bitrate and resolution choices can involve a trade-off between picture quality and broad accessibility.

8. Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe Likely layer to investigate First useful test
Dropped-frame percentage rises Connection to YouTube ingest Lower bitrate or test another ingest server; check stability, VPNs, security software, and Wi-Fi.
Rendering or encoding lag appears Local computer workload Simplify the scene and test at a lower output resolution or frame rate.
Playlist stutters but OBS counters stay healthy Media source, playback dependency, or file Test the file outside OBS, then in a minimal scene; verify VLC installation and architecture if using VLC Video.
Audio is irregular while video plays normally Audio source or monitoring route Check the source meter and listen at the source and through OBS monitoring.
Only some viewers report buffering Viewer device or network path Compare playback on another device or connection and verify the broadcaster’s counters.

If the cause remains unclear, capture the OBS version and operating system, playlist source and media format, OBS log, current Stats values, upload stability, audio routing, and whether the stutter appears in preview, the stream, or only on viewer devices. Those details distinguish causes that the symptom alone cannot identify.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the playlist is prerecorded and the goal is a continuously running YouTube channel, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping from the cloud rather than relying on OBS running on a home computer. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
