First find out where the freeze happens: in OBS’s preview or local recording, in YouTube’s Live Control Room, or only for viewers. If OBS’s preview and recording freeze at the playlist transition, troubleshoot the media source and its files or URLs. If the local output is smooth but YouTube freezes, check Live Control Room health messages and OBS’s connection indicators instead. The language of the videos is not established as a cause.
1. Locate the freeze before changing settings
Run a short, non-public test or make a local recording, then watch the exact playlist change. Check OBS and YouTube separately; a freeze at the same moment in both places does not point to the same problem as a freeze seen only by viewers.
- Does the video freeze in OBS’s preview, or does it continue normally?
- Does a local recording freeze at the same frame and time?
- Does the Live Control Room preview freeze, or only the public YouTube player?
- Does OBS’s dropped-frames indicator rise at the transition? Are there timestamped errors in Live Control Room?
- Does audio continue while the picture is frozen, or do both stop?
If only one viewer reports the issue, ask whether viewers on separate connections see it too. YouTube distinguishes a single viewer’s playback problem from issues reported by multiple viewers; see its stream-buffering troubleshooting guidance.

2. Identify the playlist source and its contents
OBS’s Media Sources guide distinguishes a Media Source, intended for one media file, from the VLC Video source, which can contain multiple playlist items and uses VLC libraries. VLC must be installed for VLC Video to appear; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The VLC source offers playlist loop and shuffle options, visibility behavior and network caching settings.
If the playlist uses local files
A freeze on a local-file transition points toward the files, decoding compatibility, source configuration or OBS/plugin behavior. Test with two short, known-good local files in a new scene and source. If that transition works, test the original playlist entries one by one. If the minimal test also freezes, note the OBS and VLC versions, VLC architecture, source settings, filters and reproduction log before changing more settings.
If the playlist uses URLs
Online items add URL fetching and network interruptions as possible variables. Compare a short local-file playlist with the original URLs; this can help distinguish a local playback issue from one involving the online entries. The available information does not establish which kind of playlist you use, or that changing network caching will fix the symptom. Treat caching as a test setting, not a guaranteed remedy.

3. Check plugin and filter compatibility
Media Playlist Source plugin
If the playlist comes from the separate Media Playlist Source plugin, record both its version and your OBS version. The plugin’s update notes describe a fix for playlists not continuing after a transition and for a repeated or same-path case. They state that the plugin’s 0.1.0 line requires OBS 31 and that the relevant upstream change was merged since OBS 31. Check whether your versions match before treating this as the cause; the notes do not show that every transition freeze is this bug.

VLC Video source with Video Delay (Async)
If you use the VLC source with a Video Delay (Async) filter, try reproducing the transition without that filter in a safe test. An OBS issue marked confirmed describes a crash when changing tracks with this filter in OBS 27.2.3. That report is historical and specific; it is relevant as a clue only if your setup matches.
4. Investigate YouTube and the connection only when local output is healthy
If OBS’s source and local recording look right but viewers see a freeze, inspect Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and timestamped messages. YouTube lists ingest problems involving codec or container, bitrate, video settings and keyframe frequency in its live streaming error messages guide.

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution recommendations for your resolution and encoder. YouTube advises choosing quality based on available internet, testing before the event with similar movement and audio, and monitoring stream health. Do not copy a generic bitrate without checking the relevant current recommendation and your actual configuration.
When OBS reports dropped frames or connection trouble
OBS associates dropped frames with connection instability or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate. Follow its connection troubleshooting guide: check whether the bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, try another ingest server where available, and investigate VPN, security or network software and Wi-Fi instability. A wired connection is a useful stability check. Dynamic bitrate may mask symptoms, but OBS says it does not resolve the underlying issue.

These network checks are not the right fix for a source that visibly freezes inside OBS while dropped frames remain normal.

When the encoder output and the YouTube stream disagree
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide advises checking the outbound connection if the encoder looks and sounds healthy but the stream does not. If encoder output itself is poor, inspect the media, audio and video sources and encoder load, or compare with another encoder. YouTube also recommends validating that a local archive is being written and checking its quality.

Before making further changes, record the details that distinguish the diagnostic branches. A machine-specific cause cannot be determined without this information.
- Operating system and OBS version.
- Source type: Media Source, built-in VLC Video, Media Playlist Source plugin, browser source or another source.
- VLC version and architecture, if applicable.
- Whether playlist entries are local files or URLs.
- Filters attached to the source, especially Video Delay (Async).
- Whether OBS preview, local recording, Live Control Room preview or only viewer playback freezes.
- Whether audio continues, dropped frames rise, or Live Control Room records a timestamped error.
- An OBS log from a reproduction.
A 2020 OBS forum post describes a VLC source playing a YouTube playlist that froze. It is one user’s report, not evidence of a current general cause or a fix for your setup.
