If OBS shows a black picture while a recorded lesson should be playing, first check the lesson’s source and visibility in OBS. Then distinguish a local preview/rendering problem from a YouTube connection problem: dropped frames or disconnections are not the same symptom as a black local media source. There is no single confirmed cause without details such as the file format, OBS version, and log.

First, identify where the picture disappears

Look at the OBS preview and the actual YouTube output, and note whether the lesson’s audio continues. Confirm that the lesson source is in the active scene and is not hidden by another source. These checks help separate source or rendering faults from stream-connection symptoms.

  • OBS preview is black: start with the media source, its playback settings, and rendering load.
  • Preview looks right, but YouTube is black: check what is being sent to the stream and whether the output differs from the preview.
  • The picture freezes intermittently or OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections: investigate the network route and bitrate to the ingest server. OBS treats dropped frames as a connection stability or bitrate issue, not as proof that the local lesson file is black. See the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide.
  • Audio plays while the picture is black: record that detail for diagnosis; it narrows the symptom but does not identify a cause by itself.

Check the built-in Media Source

OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for media files and supports a documented list of common video and audio extensions. Confirm that the lesson is loaded as a Media Source and that the selected file is the intended one and has a supported extension. The OBS Media Sources guide lists supported file types and explains the controls.

Verify the file and playback lifecycle

  1. In the active scene, select the lesson’s Media Source and open its properties.
  2. Check that Local File points to the correct lesson file. If you changed or moved the file, select its current location.
  3. Enable Loop if the lesson should repeat after it finishes.
  4. Enable Restart playback when source becomes active if the lesson should start from the beginning whenever the source becomes visible or active.
  5. Use Show nothing when playback ends if you do not want the final frame to remain on screen. If the lesson should stay visible at its last frame, leave that behavior disabled.
  6. Use Close file when inactive only if closing and reloading the media when the source is inactive suits the scene’s behavior. Check that it reloads as expected when shown again.

These controls govern file selection, playback, and visibility; OBS does not document them as universal black-screen fixes.

Test hardware decoding as a controlled change

Media Source offers Use hardware decoding when available. OBS describes this as asking the GPU to decode certain file types when the GPU has an appropriate decoder. If the option is available, change it as a diagnostic test, then compare playback with the previous setting. Keep track of which state you tested; the documentation does not promise that enabling or disabling it will resolve a black screen.

When to try VLC Video

VLC Video is an alternative source path when you need the extended media support provided by VLC libraries. OBS requires VLC to be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Consider it when the built-in source does not handle the media as needed, rather than assuming it will fix every black-screen problem. Compare the file support and playback behavior in your own setup; neither option is established as categorically more reliable for every 24/7 stream.

Reduce rendering load if playback is choppy or unstable

A black picture is not automatically a performance problem, but choppy rendering or overloaded output makes resource pressure worth checking. OBS explains: “OBS needs GPU time and resources because it has to composite and render a scene.” Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide recommends reducing unnecessary work in the scene.

  • Use media at a resolution appropriate for the stream output instead of unnecessarily oversized files.
  • Simplify complex scenes and remove sources that are not needed during the lesson.
  • Limit resource-heavy filters and excessive browser sources.
  • Use Media Source or VLC Video for video and audio files rather than a source type intended for another purpose.

OBS’s system requirements page lists baseline platform requirements: Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 (“Big Sur”) or later with an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; and Linux/Unix with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU and an X window system or Wayland. Those baselines do not establish that a particular machine can handle a particular workload. OBS cautions, “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS.”

Test the lesson before relying on a continuous stream

After changing source settings, make a short test recording or stream. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes rather than going straight into a first stream. For this lesson, check picture and audio, whether the source appears when expected, what happens at the end of playback, whether looping or restart behavior works, and whether the normal scene returns correctly. The OBS guidance cited here does not establish a specific 24/7 soak-test duration.
