A local FFmpeg concat list, an HLS .m3u8 manifest, and a YouTube webpage playlist handled by yt-dlp are different inputs; no single FFmpeg flag skips every kind of failure. For damaged packets that FFmpeg can still read, -fflags +discardcorrupt may help. For a missing file, stale URL, malformed entry, or incompatible concat input, fix or filter the entry at the layer that supplies it.
Identify which playlist is failing
Before changing options, inspect the command and determine what follows -i, and which program obtained or built that input. Ask for the exact command and the first FFmpeg error: the process exiting by itself does not establish that a media packet is corrupt.
- Local concat-demuxer list: A command such as
ffmpeg -f concat -i list.txt ...asks FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to read a text list of files and directives in sequence. Investigate the list syntax, paths, and media files. - HLS manifest: An
.m3u8can reference remote or local media segments. Inspect the manifest and the particular referenced segment that fails. - YouTube webpage playlist: If a YouTube playlist URL is passed to
yt-dlp, the downloader handles the playlist. FFmpeg may be used later to handle or merge media formats, but that does not make the webpage playlist an FFmpeg concat list. The yt-dlp FAQ explains that YouTube may provide separate audio and video formats and that FFmpeg can be used to merge them.
FFmpeg’s formats documentation and FAQ describe distinct concat approaches and their use cases. Match the fix to the component that reads the problematic entry.
Capture the first failure and isolate the entry
Preserve useful error details
Keep the log from the first failure, not just the final “exited” status. Record the item being read, any HTTP status, whether the same item fails on every run, and the FFmpeg version and operating system. The exact command, error, playlist format, version, and operating system are not specified here, so a universal replacement command would be unsafe.

Possible causes include an unavailable or stale path or URL, malformed playlist syntax, a damaged packet or segment, incompatible streams in a concat operation, or a transport interruption. These failures occur at different layers and need different remedies.
Test the suspicious item by itself
- Run the item independently using the same FFmpeg build and any required headers or credentials.
- For a local concat list, back up the list, temporarily remove or comment out the suspect entry, and check whether processing reaches later valid entries.
- For HLS, inspect the manifest reference and test the referenced segment independently.
- For a YouTube webpage playlist, check the downloader’s item and continuation behavior rather than treating the webpage URL as an FFmpeg concat file.
If the same segment fails repeatedly, inspecting that entry for an invalid or outdated reference is a useful troubleshooting heuristic. If the failing location varies, a transient network problem is one possibility. The FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion offers this repeatable-versus-varying distinction as troubleshooting advice, not proof of cause.

Choose a fix for the actual failure

Damaged packets: discard only what FFmpeg can read
The FFmpeg Formats Documentation describes discardcorrupt as “Discard corrupted packets.” The commonly used input-option spelling is -fflags +discardcorrupt, placed before the relevant input, for example:
ffmpeg -fflags +discardcorrupt -i input.ts output.mp4This is an example for an input whose demuxer can read and identify corrupted packets; it is not a command to skip an unopenable playlist entry. Discarding packets can lose damaged content. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the flag and related input flags.

Network interruptions: use HTTP reconnect options only when applicable
For FFmpeg’s native HTTP protocol, documented options include reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, and retry or delay limits. Which options are appropriate depends on the protocol and the observed failure. Consult the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation before applying them. Reconnection can retry a transport request; it cannot turn a stale or malformed reference into a valid one.
Bad paths or URLs: validate before processing
If the failing entry points to a missing file or unavailable URL, make the playlist producer check entries and omit or replace unavailable items, or use a wrapper that processes each entry separately so one failure does not end the entire job. The FFmpeg documentation reviewed here does not establish a universal concat-demuxer option to skip every failed entry. Do not use packet-discard or reconnect flags as substitutes for checking playlist contents.

Concat inputs: check stream layouts and durations
For the concat demuxer, verify that the files have the same streams. The FFmpeg all-in-one documentation, section 20.6, describes concat-demuxer behavior and constraints. Incorrect durations can shift later timestamps or produce artifacts. If inputs have incompatible formats or codecs, consider re-encoding or a concat-filter workflow rather than assuming stream-copy concatenation will work. The FFmpeg FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer, filter, and protocol.
Prevent one bad entry from stopping a recurring stream
- Validate local paths or remote references before adding them to a generated list.
- Retain the first error and the identity of the item that failed, so recurring failures can be isolated instead of masked.
- Test questionable entries independently before putting them into an unattended playlist.
- For concat-demuxer jobs, check stream compatibility and durations when adding or replacing files.
- Use reconnect behavior for transport failures and packet discard for readable corrupt packets; neither is a general playlist-entry recovery mechanism.
