If FFmpeg stops when it reaches a Hindi filename, first identify how that filename reaches FFmpeg. For an FFmpeg concat demuxer playlist, the documented fix for a trusted script rejected by the filename safety filter is to add -safe 0 before the playlist’s -i option. That setting does not fix a wrong path, a different playlist format, or incompatible media—and the symptom alone does not prove that FFmpeg cannot handle Devanagari.
Start by identifying what FFmpeg is trying to open
A Hindi YouTube playlist stream can stop at several different points: the shell or application may pass a path differently than intended; FFmpeg’s concat demuxer may reject a script entry as unsafe; or FFmpeg may open the file and then fail to read its container, streams, or codecs. The right fix depends on which step fails.
- Check the exact path. Confirm that the file exists where FFmpeg expects it. Compare the full directory, filename, spelling, and extension with the command or playlist entry. This is a diagnostic check, not an established cause of every Devanagari filename failure.
- Identify the playlist format. The
-safeoption below is specifically for FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, which reads a text script containingfiledirectives. Do not apply this command to a different playlist format without checking its documentation. - Read the complete error. Note whether FFmpeg says the path cannot be opened or rejected, or whether it opens the file and then reports a format, stream, or codec problem.
For command-line handoff issues, check the exact invocation and how your shell or application passes the path; FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes its input and output syntax. If behavior does not match the documented options, check your installed build with ffmpeg -version; no version or operating system is specified for this symptom.
If the playlist is an FFmpeg concat script
The concat demuxer uses a text script with entries such as file 'गीत.mp4'. Its safe option defaults to 1, which accepts only paths made from a restricted portable character set. Devanagari characters can therefore be rejected as part of an unsafe path in this specific context. That is not evidence of a general FFmpeg inability to handle Devanagari. Check the script’s format and paths
A minimal script for a trusted local playlist could look like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'गीत.mp4'
file 'अगला गीत.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 and must not have a byte-order mark. For paths containing spaces or special characters, use the concat script’s documented quoting or escaping rules. Confirm that each listed filename and directory matches the actual file.

Disable the safe-path filter only for a playlist you trust
Try this input command when the concat demuxer is rejecting a trusted local script’s paths:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy output.mp4Here, -safe 0 disables the concat demuxer’s filename restriction. It is an input option, so put it before the corresponding -i playlist.txt. Do not use this setting with a playlist you do not trust. The example’s stream-copy output is illustrative: the selected output container and codecs must suit your files and workflow.

If changing the path handling does not fix the stop
A successful path fix only gets FFmpeg past the filename check. The concat demuxer requires the inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If it now opens a file but fails later, inspect the new full diagnostic rather than treating it as another filename problem.
- Path or unsafe-name error remains: recheck the script entry, real path, quoting, and exact command. Confirm that you are using the concat demuxer and that
-safe 0appears before that input’s-i. - The error changes after the file opens: investigate the reported container, stream, or codec issue. A container being readable does not by itself mean the contained codec is supported; the FFmpeg Project explains this distinction in its FAQ.
- The playlist is not a concat script: do not assume
-safe 0applies. Verify that playlist format’s path syntax and options instead. - The documented option is unrecognized or behaves differently: check
ffmpeg -versionand consult documentation relevant to the installed build.
