Firsty Free is worth installing as a zero-cost backup, not as your primary travel data plan. It can handle messages, maps, email and occasional essential browsing when your destination and phone qualify. The trade-offs are material: you unlock data by watching advertisements, speed is capped at 1 Mbps, daily usage is limited, and coverage figures differ between Firsty’s own pages.
Check your exact country in the app before departure, install and activate the eSIM at home, and use a paid plan when you need dependable speed, tethering or heavy daily data.
Firsty Free eSIM: the short verdict
Firsty Free is genuinely free in the sense that it does not require an upfront payment or a recurring subscription. Instead, each short advertisement unlocks a small amount of mobile data. Firsty’s official Free page states that one ad unlocks 20 MB at speeds of up to 1 Mbps. The Help Center describes an 18-ad daily ceiling, equivalent to a maximum of 360 MB per day.
That combination makes the plan useful for a narrow job: keeping a phone connected for WhatsApp-style messaging, directions, email, account verification and light browsing when you do not want to buy data immediately. It is a poor fit for video, large downloads, cloud backups, sustained social-media use or work that depends on a stable hotspot.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The decision also depends on location. Current Firsty pages list different Free footprints, and an independent September 2026 test covered only 74 countries. Treat the country list as changeable rather than assuming that “worldwide” means every destination is included.
What Firsty Free actually includes
| Feature | What the current information says | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Price | No charge for the Free tier; access is funded by advertising. | You exchange viewing ads for small data allowances rather than paying money. |
| Data per ad | 20 MB, according to Firsty’s Free plan page (2026). | Enough for short text sessions, but not a large file or extended media session. |
| Daily allowance | Up to 18 ads, or 360 MB per day, according to the Help Center (2026). | There is a hard daily ceiling that cannot be increased. |
| Stored balance | The Free page says the balance can hold 240 MB. | You may need to use some balance before earning more, even if the daily earning limit has not been reached. |
| Speed | Up to 1 Mbps. | Messaging and basic pages are realistic; high-bandwidth activity is not. |
| Data expiry | Firsty says earned data lasts seven days. | Unused promotional data is not a permanent reserve. |
| Activation requirements | An eSIM-capable phone, an eligible phone-number country and an eligible current location. | Installing the app alone does not guarantee that Free will be offered. |
How the advertisement exchange works
After installing the app and selecting Free, you watch a short advertisement to receive the stated 20 MB increment. The Help Center says the daily limit of 18 advertisements (360 MB per day) cannot be increased. The allowance is therefore metered both by the amount each ad grants and by the number of ads accepted in a day.
The 240 MB balance limit is separate from the 360 MB daily earning limit. In practical terms, you can earn up to the daily maximum, but the app will not retain more than its stated balance capacity at once. Data earned under the Free plan expires after seven days, so saving it for a much later trip is unreliable.
Is 1 Mbps enough for normal travel tasks?
A 1 Mbps ceiling is workable for low-bandwidth communication but leaves little headroom for media-heavy apps. Actual performance can also vary with the local network and congestion; the cap is an upper limit, not a promise that every session will reach it.

| Task | Free-tier suitability | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Text messages and chat | Good | Text normally uses little data. Delay or disable automatic media downloads to preserve the allowance. |
| Turn-by-turn maps | Generally suitable | Download offline maps before leaving Wi-Fi and keep live satellite imagery off when possible. |
| Good for light use | Plain messages and small attachments are reasonable; large attachments can consume a session quickly. | |
| Light web browsing | Usable but slow | Pages with large images, scripts or video advertising may take noticeably longer. |
| Music streaming | Marginal | Use downloaded playlists rather than streaming continuously. |
| Video streaming | Poor | The speed ceiling and daily data cap make sustained video impractical. |
| Photo or video backup | Not suitable | Wait for Wi-Fi or use a paid high-speed allowance. |
| Remote work and large downloads | Not dependable | Updates, file transfers and video meetings can exhaust the allowance or stall. |
Coverage is the question to verify before you fly
There is no single stable Free-country count in the currently published material. Firsty’s Free plan page says 171 countries. Its main site says Free is available in 168 countries while describing 176 countries for the overall service. TechRadar’s September 2026 comparison tested a 74-country Free footprint and cautioned that much of Asia and the Americas may be excluded.
These figures are not interchangeable: they may reflect different plan definitions, test routes or update times. The safest rule is to search for your exact destination in the Firsty app immediately before departure. Do not infer Free eligibility from the number of countries covered by Firsty’s paid service.
When a destination is paid-only
The Help Center gives Panama and Laos as examples of destinations with paid Firsty coverage but no Firsty Free access. If your itinerary includes a country in that category, the app may show a paid option even though Firsty operates there. A multi-country trip should be checked one country at a time, especially when crossing borders by land or sea.

Phone and account eligibility
Firsty says eligibility is calculated automatically from three factors: the country associated with your phone number, your current physical location and whether your device supports eSIM. A compatible handset alone is not sufficient.

The app-store listing names recent iPhone, Samsung, Pixel and other Android eSIM devices as supported. TechRadar reported in 2026 that Firsty’s published device list lagged some newer releases, so a phone that technically supports eSIM may still need an in-app eligibility check.
- Confirm that your exact phone model has eSIM hardware and is not carrier-locked.
- Install the latest Firsty app while you still have reliable Wi-Fi.
- Check the destination shown in the app, using the country where you will first need service.
- Keep your normal SIM active for calls or texts if you need them, but configure mobile data to use the Firsty line after landing.
How to install and activate Firsty Free
- Check the phone. Open your device’s cellular or SIM settings and verify that an “Add eSIM” or equivalent option exists. Update the operating system before installation.
- Install the app at home. Download Firsty over Wi-Fi, sign in if prompted, and allow the app to perform its eligibility check while your existing connection is working.
- Search the destination. Confirm that Free—not only a paid plan—is offered for every country where you expect to use data.
- Add the eSIM. Follow the in-app installation flow. Keep the app open until the eSIM appears in your phone’s SIM manager; do not delete the profile after installation.
- Choose the data line. Set Firsty as the mobile-data SIM when you arrive. If your phone offers “Allow mobile data switching,” turn it off so the primary SIM does not incur roaming charges.
- Connect after landing. Enable data roaming for the Firsty eSIM if the app’s instructions require it, then wait for network registration. The exact switch names differ between iPhone and Android.
- Claim data. Use the app’s ad-unlock control to claim the first 20 MB. Repeat only as needed and monitor the remaining balance.
Installing before travel matters because activation can require an internet connection and a location check. Completing the setup at home gives you a chance to fix an unsupported device, missing destination or carrier lock before you are dependent on the eSIM.
Can you use Firsty Free as a hotspot?
Firsty’s Help Center says people who want the highest speeds or hotspot may need Classic or Unlimited. That wording means hotspot availability and suitability should not be assumed for Free. Even if your phone exposes a tethering switch, the capped speed and small daily allowance make it unsuitable for sustained laptop work.

Firsty’s paid upgrades
| Plan | Published starting price | Data and speed description | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | Ad-supported; 20 MB per ad, up to 360 MB per day, with a 1 Mbps cap. | Emergency and essential phone use where coverage is confirmed. |
| Classic | From €0.98 per GB | Removes ads and provides the highest available speed, according to Firsty’s 2026 main site. | Travelers who want metered data without the advertising exchange. |
| Unlimited | From €2 per day | 5 GB at high speed, then 512 Kbps until the next day or a top-up, according to Firsty’s plan description. | Heavy daily use, faster browsing and situations where a daily allowance is easier to budget. |
Prices are published starting rates and may vary by destination or purchase screen. Firsty announced a three-plan global setup and said users without an active plan would migrate to that structure from 6 July 2026. Check the price and terms displayed in the app at purchase rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Firsty Free compared with other travel eSIM choices
Free has one unusual advantage: no monetary commitment before you try it. The trade is a slower, advertising-funded experience with a volatile country list. Paid travel eSIM services such as Airalo, Nomad and Ubigi are more appropriate when your route is outside the verified Free footprint or when you need a larger high-speed allowance. Their exact prices and coverage depend on destination and plan, so compare the country-specific offer rather than a global headline.
| Your priority | Most logical option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Spend nothing and have a backup line | Firsty Free | It can provide essential connectivity without an upfront payment, provided your country and device qualify. |
| Remove ads and pay only for data used | Firsty Classic | It starts at €0.98 per GB and is described as the highest-speed Firsty option. |
| Several gigabytes every day | Firsty Unlimited or another destination-specific paid plan | Unlimited includes 5 GB at high speed before its reduced-speed phase. |
| Destination not listed for Free | Firsty paid coverage or another travel eSIM | Free eligibility is narrower than Firsty’s overall service. |
| Work tethering and predictable performance | A paid high-speed plan | The Free allowance and speed ceiling are not designed for sustained hotspot use. |
Who should choose Firsty Free?
Choose it when these conditions fit
- Your destination appears as Free in the app immediately before travel.
- Your phone is eSIM-capable, unlocked and accepted by the app.
- You mainly need text messaging, directions, email and occasional browsing.
- You accept watching advertisements and managing a daily allowance.
- You have Wi-Fi or another SIM available for software updates, backups and media.
Skip it when any of these is true
- You need continuous high-speed data for video, cloud work or large downloads.
- You expect to tether a laptop or several devices for hours.
- Your itinerary includes a country that the app marks as paid-only or unsupported.
- You dislike ad-supported services or cannot spare time to unlock data.
- You need a predictable allowance without a seven-day expiry.
Common problems and practical fixes
Free does not appear in the app
Recheck the destination, phone-number country and device support. These are the three eligibility inputs Firsty identifies. If the destination is covered only by a paid plan, there is no Free activation to force through. Update the app and retry on a normal internet connection; do not wait until you are offline at the airport.

Make Firsty the selected mobile-data line, verify that the eSIM is enabled, and follow the app’s roaming instruction. Turn off automatic data switching to prevent the phone from silently using your primary SIM. If registration still fails, connect to Wi-Fi and reopen the app so it can refresh the eligibility and network state.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Data disappears faster than expected
Check background activity from photo backup, app updates, social feeds and automatic video playback. Download maps and entertainment on Wi-Fi, disable media auto-downloads in chat apps, and watch the in-app balance after each ad unlock. Remember that the stored balance is limited and earned data expires after seven days.
Browsing feels unusably slow
The Free tier is intentionally speed-capped. Switch to Wi-Fi for large pages or upgrade to Classic for higher available speed. If you need a daily high-speed block, Unlimited provides 5 GB at high speed before its reduced-speed phase.
Final buying decision
Install Firsty Free if you want an emergency connection at no financial cost and your trip is limited to supported countries. It is a sensible spare for messages, maps and email, especially when paired with offline downloads and a normal SIM for voice service. Do not mistake “free” for unlimited or universal: advertising unlocks the data, the daily ceiling is fixed, speed is capped, and coverage must be verified in the app.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For faster browsing, hotspot use, media or a schedule that cannot tolerate interruptions, pay for Classic, choose Unlimited when its 5 GB high-speed allowance fits your day, or select another destination-specific travel eSIM. The cheapest option is only the best option when its limits match what you actually need to do.
