Mozilla tracked a YouTube page issue in which a flexible menu beneath the video repeatedly changed which controls it displayed, triggering repeated layout and rendering work. YouTube introduced a mitigation, and Mozilla later verified that the reported issue no longer reproduced in Firefox 151.0 candidate build 1 on Windows 10. That is evidence for a fix to this specific problem—not proof that every Firefox memory spike or YouTube freeze is resolved.
What caused the reported YouTube slowdown?
In Bugzilla issue 2035904, Mozilla documented a loop involving YouTube’s flexible menu beneath the video. As the available width changed, the menu could restore and then remove controls, prompting another layout or update cycle. Repeated cycles could mean progressively more rendering work and a page that became slow or unresponsive.
The report describes a page-performance problem that could accompany high resource use; it does not establish that every report of high Firefox RAM use had this cause. Separate YouTube performance and memory reports exist, including reports concerning other Firefox versions.
What is the potential solution, and how strong is the evidence?
A Mozilla Bugzilla comment records that YouTube had released a mitigation intended to stop the behavior. The issue was marked resolved and later verified as no longer reproducible with Firefox 151.0 candidate build 1 on Windows 10. The verification is meaningful for the reported bug and that test setup, but it does not establish results for every Firefox release, operating system, or YouTube page.

Secondary reporting also described user complaints involving Brave and Edge, so this incident should not be framed as inherently Firefox-only. Those accounts are anecdotes, not a representative measurement of how many people were affected. A figure of more than 7 GB cited in that coverage refers to user reports, not a typical or independently measured amount.
What to do if YouTube still uses too much memory in Firefox
If the tab continues to consume unusually high resources or Firefox freezes, treat it as a separate troubleshooting problem unless the same menu-loop behavior has been confirmed. Mozilla’s general guidance in Fix Firefox using too much memory or CPU resources suggests these steps:

- Update Firefox. Install the current available version, then check whether the problem remains.
- Try Troubleshoot Mode. This helps determine whether an extension or theme is contributing. If performance improves there, investigate add-ons and customizations before changing other settings.
- Check resource-heavy tabs. Close tabs using excessive resources, especially if the slowdown is not limited to YouTube.
- Gather diagnostic information if it persists. Use Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance when reporting the issue; be cautious with third-party performance software.
These are general Firefox isolation steps, not the YouTube-side mitigation. Older Bugzilla discussions, such as the Firefox 133-era YouTube lag report, include user-proposed advanced-setting and process changes; those suggestions are not equivalent to the later mitigation and should not be treated as universally safe fixes. Another report, Bugzilla issue 2035448, concerns a separate YouTube freezing or memory problem in the Firefox 150 period.

No. Mozilla’s issue record documents a particular repeated-menu rendering problem and its verification, while secondary coverage describes individual user complaints. Neither supplies a representative count or rate of affected users. Reports of high memory use can have different causes, so the menu-loop fix should not be generalized to every Firefox YouTube slowdown.
