Translation coverage and icon controls differ by platform: desktop and Android gained Chinese, Japanese, and Korean support in 2025, while iOS translation began rolling out later that year.
How Firefox translates webpages—and what happens to your data
Firefox downloads translation language models into the browser and processes translations locally rather than sending webpage text to a cloud translation service. Mozilla says it does not record the webpages users translate. Its Firefox Translate feature page describes this local model approach.
Mozilla’s December 9, 2025 announcement about iOS translation says, “Your content never leaves your device” and “Nothing is logged or stored.” Once the required model has been downloaded, translation can work offline. Availability and behavior can still vary by Firefox version, platform, language pack, and rollout stage.
What translation features are available by platform?
| Platform | Availability and scope | Offline behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Full-page and selected-text translation are documented by Mozilla Support. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean support was added in 2025. | Translations can work offline after the relevant model is downloaded. |
| Android | Full-page and selected-text translation are documented by Mozilla Support. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean support was added in 2025. | Translations can work offline after the relevant model is downloaded. |
| iOS | On-device translation began rolling out in December 2025, initially in German, French, and Japanese, then adding Spanish and Portuguese. Mozilla said more languages were planned. | Mozilla says translation can work offline after the model is downloaded. |
Mozilla’s August 18, 2025 announcement said that adding Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) translation on desktop and Android followed strong user requests. It also reported that active translation users in Asia had more than doubled since desktop support launched; Mozilla did not publish an absolute user count or an independent translation-accuracy benchmark in the cited material.

Which languages does Firefox Translate support?
Firefox’s feature page, accessed September 27, 2026, lists these languages: Albanian, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla, Basque, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Malayalam, Norwegian Bokmål, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. Mozilla says additional languages are in development.
That list describes Firefox Translate’s stated coverage overall; it does not mean every language is available on every platform or to every user at the same time. Mozilla’s July 10, 2026 roadmap lists “Translation for more languages” on iOS, with the goal of extending on-device translation to all languages officially supported by Firefox. A roadmap goal is not a promised release date or confirmation that the expansion has shipped.
How to translate a page or selected text
Mozilla Support documents full-page translation, selected-text translation, language detection, language-pack installation, and controls for whether Firefox offers or blocks translation. Exact labels can vary by platform and version.
- To translate a whole page, open the page and select Firefox’s Translate control when it appears. If the toolbar icon is missing, open the Firefox menu and choose Translate page; Mozilla also documents this option in the context menu.
- To translate only part of a page, select the text and use the translation option available for the selection.
- To manage translation behavior or language packs, open Firefox Settings and use its translation or language controls. You can configure whether translations are offered, enable or block translation, and install or remove language packs.
Translation applies to text. Mozilla says Firefox does not translate images or video, and pages that mix languages may not be handled optimally.

iPhone and iPad
Mozilla Support’s instructions, updated May 19, 2025, say to open Firefox, open its menu, then go to General → App icon and choose an alternate. On iOS 18 and later, the icon can automatically adapt to the Home Screen’s appearance.
Android
Mozilla’s December 9, 2025 announcement gives this path: Settings → Customize → App Icon. Choose from the available Firefox styles, including the community-created Momo icon. The choices shown may depend on the installed app version.
Desktop
The Mozilla sources cited here document app-icon selection on iOS and Android, but do not establish a built-in desktop icon picker.
Quick Recap
Why might the Translate icon not appear?
- Use the menu instead: open Firefox’s menu and choose Translate page; the context menu is another documented route.
- Check language and platform availability: support can vary by version, operating system, language pack, and rollout stage. iOS support began as a staged rollout in late 2025.
- Install the needed language pack: Firefox uses downloaded models, so the required pack may need to be installed before translation is available.
- Consider the page’s contents: images and video are not translated, and mixed-language pages may not translate well.
