Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—Firefox remains a strong browser choice in 2026 if you want an open-source browser with privacy controls built in. Mozilla released Firefox 152 on June 16, 2026, with redesigned Settings and a way to relax tracker blocking for an individual tab when a site breaks. Firefox is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, though older Windows and Mac versions may require Firefox ESR.
What Firefox is—and what “open source” means
Firefox is Mozilla’s free web browser. Its code is developed openly, with community contributions; that gives people a way to inspect and contribute to the project. Mozilla described its approach in its June 16, 2026 roadmap: “We’ve always built Firefox in the open and our new roadmap is an extension of that.” Mozilla’s Firefox roadmap explains that development approach.
Open source is not the same as anonymity. Websites, internet providers, and online services can still collect information about activity. Firefox’s protections can reduce some forms of tracking, but they do not make every service private or erase the data a person chooses to share.
What changed in Firefox 152
Mozilla released Firefox 152 on June 16, 2026. Its release notes describe two changes relevant to everyday use:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →#1 Best Overall
- Compatible Model(s): Magicmoon brand filter only for 24 inch -diagonally measured - widescreen monitor - aspect ratio 16:9 - filter size: width: 20 15/16", Height: 11 13/16" (531mm x 298mm)
- Superior Privacy: The computer privacy filter makes the screen appear dark when looking at it from an angle (the angle is about 30 to 60 degree), but bright when looking directly at it. To change the privacy level - simply adjust your monitor’s brightness accordingly
- Eye and Screen Protection: Privacy Filter does not only protect your private life but also protects your eyes by blocking 30% of blue light , blocking the harmful blue light between 380 to 495 nm, it filters out the blue light and relieves eye strain
- Perfect For Open Workspaces: Great for maintaining screen privacy in open work spaces
- Includes Two Options: Option 1 uses clear adhesive strips that securely attach to any computer screen. Option 2 (for computer screens with a raised bezel only) uses slide mount tabs that easily stick to the display frame, allowing you to slide the privacy screen filter on and off as needed
- Redesigned Settings: Firefox reorganized Settings with clearer groupings and navigation.
- Per-tab tracker-blocking exception in Private Browsing: If tracker blocking causes a site to break, Firefox can temporarily disable that blocking for the affected tab. This is a targeted workaround, not a reason to turn off protection across the browser.
Release notes do not guarantee that every user will see every feature immediately. Mozilla says, “Certain new Firefox features are released gradually.”
How Firefox’s privacy protections work
Firefox combines browser-level controls rather than relying entirely on add-ons. Its documented features include Enhanced Tracking Protection, anti-fingerprinting measures, Private Browsing, Total Cookie Protection, and password-manager functionality. The Firefox Privacy Notice, effective May 4, 2026, also describes technical and settings data Mozilla collects to provide core browser functionality.

Enhanced Tracking Protection and fingerprinting
Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks categories of known trackers. Firefox has also worked to strengthen anti-fingerprinting protection: Mozilla’s Firefox 151 release notes, dated May 19, 2026, say fingerprinting protection was strengthened in Standard Enhanced Tracking Protection. Fingerprinting is a technique sites can use to recognize a browser through characteristics of its configuration; protection can make that technique harder, but should not be treated as a guarantee that a user cannot be identified.
Private Browsing and session data
Private Browsing is intended to limit what Firefox retains locally from a private session. It does not hide activity from websites or network operators. Firefox 151 added a way to clear all data from the current Private Browsing session without closing the window. In Firefox 152, users can temporarily relax tracker blocking for a single Private Browsing tab if it interferes with a site.

Total Cookie Protection
Total Cookie Protection is among the features Mozilla lists as part of Firefox’s default browser protections. Cookie isolation limits how cookies are shared across sites, which can reduce cross-site tracking. It does not prevent a site from using information you provide directly or from recognizing you through other means.
Password management and Mozilla data
Firefox includes password-manager functionality. As with any password manager, protect access to the browser account and device, and use a unique password for important services. Mozilla’s privacy notice says it collects technical and settings data to provide core browser functionality; “private” therefore does not mean the browser sends no data to Mozilla.

Firefox availability and older computers
Mozilla lists current Firefox builds for Windows 64-bit and 32-bit, Windows ARM64, macOS, Linux 64-bit, Linux ARM64, Linux 32-bit, Android, and iOS. The latest release is not supported on Windows 8.1 and earlier or macOS 10.14 and earlier; Mozilla directs users of those systems to Firefox ESR, its Extended Support Release. Check Mozilla’s Firefox download and platform page for the available builds and guidance.
ESR is the relevant route for an older system, but it is not the same as receiving the newest standard-release features. If you depend on a particular new feature, first confirm that it is available in the ESR version for your operating system.

Firefox versus Chrome for privacy
A useful comparison is about specific protections and your workflow, not a blanket claim that one browser makes you private. Firefox documents built-in tracking protection, fingerprinting defenses, Private Browsing, and Total Cookie Protection. For a fair comparison with Chrome, look at the other browser’s current settings and platform-specific behavior too; the available evidence here does not establish a head-to-head privacy test or performance result.
| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Privacy controls | Tracking protection defaults, anti-fingerprinting behavior, private-session data handling, and cookie isolation. |
| Supported devices and versions | Whether the current browser release supports your operating system, or whether you need an extended-support version. |
| Feature delivery | Whether a feature is on desktop or mobile, and whether it is available to your account yet; Firefox may roll out features gradually. |
| Workflow | Settings organization, tabs, extensions, and cross-device needs. Confirm that the features you rely on exist in the release you plan to use. |
| Performance and compatibility | Test the sites and tasks that matter to you on your own device. No current benchmark or direct compatibility comparison is established here. |
Is Firefox a good choice for you?
Firefox is a sensible option if you want a free browser with an open development model and integrated privacy controls. Before switching, identify your operating system and decide whether you need the newest standard-release features or the stability path for an older system. Then check the privacy controls and site compatibility that matter to your everyday browsing.
For most supported computers and phones, start with the current Firefox release. If you use Windows 8.1 or earlier, or macOS 10.14 or earlier, consult Mozilla’s ESR guidance rather than assuming the newest release will install.
