For a quick full-page screenshot, Firefox is the simpler choice: right-click the page, select Take Screenshot, then Save full page. Chrome is a good fit when you are already using DevTools or need to set a device viewport. Neither browser has a documented, controlled advantage in screenshot fidelity; if accuracy matters, capture the page you care about and inspect the result.

Firefox vs. Chrome: the practical difference

What you need Practical choice Why
A quick, one-off full-page capture Firefox Its regular screenshot interface includes Save full page, without taking the DevTools route.
A capture while working in DevTools or setting a device viewport Chrome Device Mode provides Capture a full size screenshot and device-dimension controls.
A delay, device-pixel-ratio setting, named file, clipboard output, or element selector Firefox DevTools Firefox’s :screenshot command documents these options.
Determining which browser renders a particular page more faithfully Test both The official documentation reviewed does not provide a head-to-head test or comparative reliability data.

These are differences in documented workflow and controls, not proof that one browser produces better images. Mozilla’s instructions describe Firefox’s screenshot features, while Chrome for Developers documents its Device Mode workflow; neither establishes a universal winner for output quality (Mozilla Support; Chrome for Developers).

How to take a full-page screenshot in Firefox

Use Firefox’s screenshot interface

  1. Open the page you want to capture.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. On macOS, Control-click works too. The documented shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows and Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. Choose Save full page to capture beyond the visible viewport.
  4. Save the image or use the copy option shown in the screenshot interface.

The same interface can capture only the visible area, a selected region, or a page element. The available choices may depend on the screenshot selection you make (Mozilla Support).

Use Firefox DevTools for more control

To add the screenshot button to DevTools, open DevTools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons. Then use the screenshot button. This route is convenient if you already have DevTools open.

Use the Web Console for configurable captures

Firefox’s Web Console supports the :screenshot command. For example, enter :screenshot --fullpage --filename=page.png to save a full-page image with a chosen filename. Mozilla documents these options:

  • --fullpage captures the full page.
  • --delay waits before capture, which can help when you need time for a hover or menu state to appear.
  • --dpr sets the device-pixel ratio used for the screenshot.
  • --filename specifies the output filename.
  • --clipboard copies the result to the clipboard.
  • --file saves the screenshot to a file.
  • --selector targets an element by CSS selector.

Use a different filename for each capture you want to keep: Mozilla notes that reusing a filename can overwrite the earlier image. Check the current Firefox Source Docs for command syntax and behavior (Mozilla Firefox Source Docs: Taking screenshots).

How to capture a full-size screenshot in Chrome

  1. Open the page in Chrome and open DevTools.
  2. Turn on Device Mode.
  3. Open the Device Mode More options menu.
  4. Select Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome’s full-size option captures the whole page, including content outside the viewport. Device Mode also lets you set device dimensions, making it useful when the target viewport or device simulation matters. Labels and menus can vary with Chrome versions; consult the documentation if your installed version presents a different interface (Chrome for Developers: Device Mode).

Chrome’s Command Menu documentation also covers area screenshots. That is a separate capture mode, not the full-page workflow; Google notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked (Chrome for Developers: Command Menu).

How to decide which browser to use

  • Choose Firefox for the shortest built-in path or when you need the documented delay, selector, filename, clipboard, or device-pixel-ratio controls.
  • Choose Chrome if you are already using DevTools Device Mode or your task depends on its device-dimension controls.
  • Capture both if you need to know how a specific page looks in each browser. Compare the images at the intended viewport and check important page areas rather than assuming either browser is universally more faithful.

Do not assume either browser will always handle lazy-loaded images, animations, sticky elements, cross-origin content, or exceptionally long pages correctly. The cited official instructions do not establish those guarantees. For a fidelity-sensitive job, inspect the actual output and adjust the capture method if needed.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. For example, with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
