There is no universal monthly-cost winner. A Raspberry Pi’s electricity cost depends on its measured wall-power draw and your electricity tariff; an Indian VPS’s cost depends on its actual monthly charge, outbound-data allowance and billing terms. Compare both for the same stream settings and 30-day period—and include reliability and maintenance, not just the headline bill.
Compare the same stream and the same 30 days
Start by deciding what FFmpeg will do. Relaying an already encoded file without re-encoding is a different workload from decoding, applying filters or overlays, and encoding video in real time. The source, codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio handling and FFmpeg command all affect compute needs. Neither a Raspberry Pi model nor a VPS’s listed vCPU and RAM alone establishes that it can sustain your particular job.
Choose the output resolution, frame rate and bitrate first, then validate the exact source and command on the intended hardware or VPS. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency (not exceeding four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. These are platform settings, not a guarantee that a given device or server can encode or deliver them reliably. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health.
Calculate the Raspberry Pi’s electricity cost
Measure the assembled setup at the wall while the intended FFmpeg stream is running. Use its average draw, not the power supply’s rated capacity: a supply rating describes what it can provide, not what the device continuously consumes.

30-day electricity cost in rupees = average wall watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × applicable rupees per kWh. For a 30-day month, this simplifies to average watts × 0.72 × tariff.
For example, at an illustrative 10 W and ₹6/kWh, the arithmetic is 10 × 0.72 × 6 = ₹43.20 for 30 days. These are example inputs, not a measured Raspberry Pi draw or a national electricity tariff. Your applicable marginal rate may depend on state or union territory, utility, consumer category, billing slab and adjustments. Use the rate relevant to your bill. A secondary India-focused guide published on 2026-10-03 uses this 10 W and ₹6/kWh illustration; see its Pi electricity estimate.

Include additional equipment only if you want to count it: measure separately powered network gear or a camera, for example. Broadband you already pay for may not add to the bill, but include any genuinely incremental connectivity cost. Raspberry Pi’s hardware documentation lists recommended supply capacity of 5 V at 3 A for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and 5 V at 5 A for Raspberry Pi 5. Those are supply requirements, not continuous wall-power measurements; peripheral loads also affect requirements.
Estimate the VPS’s outbound transfer before comparing rent
A constant stream uses approximately bitrate in Mbps × 0.324 decimal TB over 30 days, before protocol overhead. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. At those rates, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 4.54 TB and 5.51 TB respectively, before overhead. A lower bitrate produces a lower estimate, but compare plans using the bitrate you actually intend to stream.

For the VPS cost, check the provider’s actual checkout total for the billing period, including applicable tax and required add-ons. Then check included outbound transfer and what happens at the cap: overage charges, throttling or suspension can change the real cost or interrupt the stream. Also verify renewal pricing, billing currency, region and resource limits. A low headline rental or a plan with apparently sufficient CPU and RAM is not a like-for-like option if its transfer allowance or sustained network capacity is inadequate.
A secondary Indian VPS guide reports advertised entry plans in the hundreds of rupees per month and examples of ₹519 for one listed configuration and ₹880 for a provider-recommended relay configuration. Those are dated listings reported by the guide, not verified current provider checkout prices, performance benchmarks or guarantees that an FFmpeg workload will work. Check the provider’s current terms directly. See the guide’s Indian VPS estimate.

Compare costs and practical trade-offs
| Cost or factor | Raspberry Pi at home | Indian VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring bill | Incremental electricity from measured wall draw and your local marginal tariff; add any genuinely incremental connectivity cost. | Monthly plan charge, taxes and add-ons; confirm outbound transfer and post-cap policy. |
| Upfront cost | Board, boot storage, suitable power supply, case or cooling, and any camera or capture equipment you do not already own. If you amortize the purchase, state the period rather than presenting it as a recurring electricity charge. | Typically a recurring rental rather than a board purchase; setup and administration time still have value. |
| Compute | Passing through an encoded file is lighter than real-time transcoding or applying processing. Test the exact command and source. | A vCPU and RAM listing does not prove the VPS can sustain your exact FFmpeg job. Validate the intended workload. |
| Network and power | Depends on home upload capacity under load, household power, router or modem uptime, and local outages. | Depends on the provider’s route, sustained outbound capacity, transfer allowance and traffic policy. A location label or port-speed headline alone does not establish stable delivery. |
| Operations | You provide and maintain the hardware, power, home network, monitoring and restart handling. | You still install and maintain FFmpeg and protect the stream key unless you use a managed service. |
| Likely fit | Someone who already owns a Pi, has reliable power and broadband, and can validate the exact workload. | Someone who needs a remotely hosted encoder and can find a plan with sufficient transfer and resources for the selected stream. |
Choose based on your actual workload and constraints
A Raspberry Pi may make sense when
- You already own suitable hardware, so you are comparing operating cost rather than treating the whole purchase as a monthly bill.
- Your measured electricity cost is acceptable and the home connection, power and router can stay available.
- You can test the exact FFmpeg command and confirm the Pi sustains the required stream without unacceptable drops or quality changes.
A VPS may make sense when
- You need the encoder hosted away from home and can verify the plan’s transfer allowance, network policy and billing terms.
- The VPS has enough resources for the exact task, especially if FFmpeg must encode or transcode in real time.
- You are prepared to maintain the server, FFmpeg process and stream-key security.
A 2018 study describes a Raspberry Pi 3 webcam-to-YouTube setup and notes that transcoding to H.264 uses significant CPU. Its hardware, software and test conditions are historical; it is not a current performance benchmark for a Pi 4, Pi 5 or your command. See the 2018 Raspberry Pi streaming study.

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel rather than run a custom FFmpeg job or stream from a live camera, StreamNeo is a managed alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream; uploads play as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
