Use YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and matching stream key, check sustained upload capacity and encoder settings, then add process supervision only if FFmpeg exits. FFmpeg’s documented HTTP reconnect flags are not a universal retry switch for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection.
First identify what actually disconnected
A frozen YouTube preview or a stream marked unhealthy does not, by itself, tell you which layer failed. Separate four possibilities: the input source stopped, the FFmpeg process exited, FFmpeg remained alive but its RTMP/RTMPS output stopped delivering data, or YouTube’s ingest stopped reporting usable stream data. The recovery method depends on which one occurred.
Capture evidence before changing settings
- Record the FFmpeg version and the exact command, but redact the stream key before sharing or storing the command in a support ticket.
- Save FFmpeg stderr, the process exit status, and timestamps covering the failure and any recovery attempt.
- Check whether the FFmpeg process is still running after the YouTube stream freezes. An exited process and a live process that is no longer producing useful output are different failures.
- Note the YouTube Live Control Room stream-health status and messages at the same time as the FFmpeg logs.
There is no single universal FFmpeg error string established for this problem. Logs and process state are more useful than treating one guessed message as definitive.
Verify YouTube’s destination and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the stream settings for the broadcast you are sending to.
- Copy the current server URL and the corresponding stream key. Do not assume an older URL or key is still assigned to the broadcast.
- Prefer the RTMPS server URL provided by YouTube. Its guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and says the URL should use
rtmps, not merelyrtmp. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance. - Check that FFmpeg’s output URL, port, and key are copied exactly. A successful TCP connection alone does not prove that the protocol, key, or broadcast configuration is correct.
If you see an SSL error or cannot connect, verify that the URL really uses RTMPS and that your FFmpeg build supports the required TLS/RTMPS connection. YouTube notes port 443 as a troubleshooting option for SSL errors when appropriate to the supplied endpoint and instructions; do not substitute a different endpoint or port without checking YouTube’s current settings.

Check FFmpeg options at the correct layer
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, and reconnect_on_http_error under its HTTP protocol documentation. That scope matters: their presence does not establish that they retry a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output connection. Check the FFmpeg protocol documentation and the help for the installed build before applying protocol-specific options.
If the input is an HTTP resource, HTTP reconnect options may be relevant to failures fetching that input. Place input options before the associated -i and validate their behavior with the installed FFmpeg version. Do not treat them as a general repair for a separate RTMP/RTMPS output failure.

Choose recovery based on the observed failure
| What you observe | What to investigate | What recovery can and cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exited | Exit status, stderr, input availability, and the event immediately before process termination. | An external supervisor can restart the process. Restarting does not prove that YouTube will accept the renewed connection or that the endpoint, key, network, or broadcast is correct. |
| FFmpeg is alive, but YouTube stops receiving data | Output connection messages, sustained VPS upload, stream-health messages, and whether the process is still sending useful data. | Do not assume HTTP reconnect flags repair an RTMP/RTMPS output. Identify and address the failed output or network layer first. |
| The input itself is HTTP and cannot be fetched | Input URL reachability and the HTTP protocol behavior for the installed FFmpeg build. | HTTP reconnect options may apply to the input side. They do not automatically recover the publishing output. |
YouTube reports noData |
Correlate the status with FFmpeg logs, process state, and network observations. | The API status means YouTube’s live backend has no information about the stream’s health status; it is not a diagnosis of VPS routing or network failure. |
For API status terminology, see Google’s LiveStreams documentation. Treat a supervisor as process recovery, not as a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
Confirm upload capacity and encoder settings
A connection that starts successfully can still fail to sustain the selected stream. YouTube recommends choosing quality based on reliable upload capacity, running an upload speed test, and testing before going live. Measure sustained upload from the VPS at the intended bitrate; a short peak or a generic speed-test result does not establish continuous headroom.

Review the settings YouTube calls out
- Protocol: use the RTMPS endpoint assigned in Live Control Room.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: consult YouTube’s current bitrate table for the chosen resolution and frame rate rather than relying on an isolated figure copied from an older guide. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options, up to 60 fps; what is available depends on the encoder and current guidance.
- Representative content: test with the audio and amount of motion expected in the actual broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages.
See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the live bitrate table and monitoring instructions. A configuration that is too demanding for the VPS’s reliable outbound capacity may appear to work briefly and then become unstable.
Test whether the VPS route is involved
The fact that the server is in India does not establish an India-specific cause. The available official guidance does not identify India-specific packet loss, peering problems, firewall behavior, or YouTube ingest availability as the reason for these disconnects.

Instead, preserve timestamps and compare repeated outbound connection attempts with sustained-upload observations from the VPS. Ask the VPS provider for relevant network evidence if the logs point to a route or host issue. If practical, compare another destination or VPS provider as a diagnostic control. Treat geography or provider routing as a hypothesis until measurements support it, rather than changing regions based on the server’s location alone.
