First establish whether FFmpeg lost its input, failed as a process, could not publish to YouTube, or encountered an unstable or undersized outbound network path. A VPS advertised as being in Hyderabad does not, by itself, make the city or its network route the cause.
Start by identifying what stopped
Before changing timeout values, preserve evidence from the failure. The same symptom—an interrupted live stream—can come from different failure boundaries and needs a different fix in each case.
- Save the complete FFmpeg command, but redact the YouTube stream key anywhere the command is stored or shared.
- Record the output of
ffmpeg -version, including the installed version and build configuration. - Keep timestamped FFmpeg logs from before and after the disconnect, the process exit status, and whether the process remained alive or a supervisor restarted it.
- Note the last input read and last successful output write, if the logs show them.
- Identify which URL and protocol the error concerns: the input source or the YouTube output. An input stall is not the same failure as a failed publishing connection.
These details distinguish a stalled source, an FFmpeg crash or exit, an output connection failure, and a YouTube ingest issue. Without the command and logs, there is no sound basis for prescribing a particular timeout.
Check whether the timeout option applies to the affected connection
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes retry controls such as reconnect and reconnect_on_network_error in its HTTP protocol section. That does not establish that those options automatically recover an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. Confirm the documentation for the protocol used by the failing URL and the installed FFmpeg release before changing options. The upstream HTTP protocol option declarations are on the moving master branch, so match them to your installed version rather than assuming they describe every build.

A timeout can limit how long an operation waits; it cannot repair a wrong endpoint, restore a broken route, or prove that the output connection supports automatic reconnection. Avoid copying HTTP input examples into an RTMP/RTMPS publishing command without confirming their scope. No numeric timeout is appropriate to recommend without knowing the affected protocol, command, FFmpeg build, and error.
Validate the YouTube ingest endpoint and transport
If FFmpeg is publishing over RTMPS, inspect the entire output URL and connection setup: scheme, endpoint, application path, port, TLS, and hostname/SNI. YouTube’s RTMPS connection guide says to create an SSL connection rather than a plain TCP connection. Its troubleshooting guidance notes that a cleartext RTMP connection to an RTMPS endpoint may time out without a useful response.

- Confirm the URL uses the
rtmpsscheme when connecting to an RTMPS endpoint. - Verify the endpoint and application path against the YouTube ingest configuration you intend to use.
- Check that the connection uses TLS to port 443 and that the hostname is available for SNI.
- If a connection reaches a host but then times out or reports an SSL problem, check for a scheme or port mismatch before increasing a timeout.
Compare the stream bitrate with sustained VPS upload capacity
Compare the configured video and audio bitrates, plus protocol overhead, with sustained outbound capacity measured from the VPS under representative conditions. A brief or idle-period speed result does not establish that the server can maintain the stream’s target rate throughout a live session.
Review YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and encoder feedback at the time of the disconnect. YouTube recommends testing before the stream and monitoring stream health; its guidance says to choose a quality that can be streamed reliably over the available internet connection. For H.264, YouTube’s encoder-setting reference gives 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 1080p/30 fps. This is an encoder recommendation, not evidence that bitrate caused a particular disconnect. Test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, and choose settings the VPS connection can sustain.

Gather evidence before blaming the VPS network or location
Attribute a problem to the VPS provider or network path only after collecting repeated, timestamped symptoms and relevant network evidence. Hyderabad describes the server’s advertised location; it does not identify the cause. No provider, route, packet-loss, firewall, or incident data is available here to diagnose a Hyderabad-specific fault.
- Record DNS resolution, connection-establishment results, and TLS outcomes around the failure times.
- Measure latency and packet loss over the relevant periods; note any firewall or security-group rules that could affect the connection.
- Check provider status information and ask support to investigate with the timestamps and connection details.
- Where practical, compare behavior from the same VPS with a separate host or route.
- Do not treat a successful ping as proof that a sustained RTMPS publishing session is healthy.
Repeated failures aligned with provider-side evidence can strengthen a network-path diagnosis. A timeout by itself cannot distinguish a provider interruption from an endpoint mistake, capacity problem, or FFmpeg-side failure.
