There is no universal FFmpeg reconnect flag that fixes a YouTube livestream disconnect. First establish whether the failure is on FFmpeg’s input side or its YouTube publishing side: FFmpeg’s commonly cited reconnect options are HTTP protocol controls, not a general repair switch for an RTMP(S) output. Once you know which connection is failing, check the relevant protocol, destination, encoder settings, and error messages.

First identify which connection is dropping

A typical FFmpeg relay has a source input and a publishing output. The source might be a file, camera feed, or network stream; the output sends the encoded stream to YouTube. A failure on one side needs a different fix from a failure on the other.

What you observe What to check first
FFmpeg logs an input read error, or source media stops arriving Investigate the input URL, source service, network path, and input protocol. HTTP reconnect options may apply if the input uses HTTP and the installed build supports them.
Input continues but the YouTube publishing connection fails Check the output protocol, YouTube URL and stream key, outbound network access, and encoder settings. HTTP input flags do not automatically reconnect an RTMP(S) output.
FFmpeg stays connected but YouTube reports stream-health errors Read the Live Control Room messages and compare the actual output with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Use the exact error and its position in the FFmpeg log to distinguish a source read failure from an output connection failure. A reconnect message alone does not prove that the YouTube publishing side is being repaired.

What FFmpeg reconnect options actually do

FFmpeg documents reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max as options for its HTTP protocol. They can be useful for HTTP inputs—for example, a live or endless HTTP source that closes or encounters a network error—but their documented scope is not a universal RTMP(S) output.

  • Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
  • reconnect enables reconnection after a disconnect before the input reaches EOF.
  • reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection, which can suit live or endless HTTP streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error enables reconnection after network errors.
  • reconnect_streamed allows reconnection for streamed, non-seekable HTTP inputs.
  • reconnect_delay_max, reconnect_max_retries, and reconnect_delay_total_max constrain retry timing or counts; check the installed build for the exact supported options and behavior.

Before adding an option, inspect the local FFmpeg build with ffmpeg -h protocol=http. Options can vary by build or version. Apply HTTP reconnect settings to the relevant HTTP input, not as an assumed fix for YouTube publishing over RTMP(S). For RTMP output failures, the available evidence does not establish a single FFmpeg reconnect command that works across builds and failure causes.

Check the YouTube publishing destination

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the current stream URL and stream key from the stream’s settings. YouTube’s setup instructions are at YouTube RTMPS setup.
  2. Use the supplied RTMPS destination if your FFmpeg build supports it. Confirm the URL scheme is rtmps, not rtmp, when using the RTMPS destination. If the log shows a timeout, recheck the URL and whether RTMPS is supported; for SSL errors, verify the scheme and the port specified by the supplied destination. Port 443 may be appropriate when it is part of the provided URL.
  3. Check the key without exposing it. A stale or mistyped key can prevent publishing. Treat the stream key like a password: redact it before sharing a command or log.
  4. Read the exact failure. A timeout, SSL/TLS error, authentication problem, and YouTube stream-health warning are different symptoms; preserve the full message when diagnosing rather than changing unrelated flags.

Match the encoder output to YouTube’s guidance

Check the settings FFmpeg is actually sending, not only the values you intended to configure. YouTube’s encoder settings identify RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its keyframe guidance is a two-second interval, not exceeding four seconds.

Verify bitrate against both the stream format and your connection

Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate; those recommendations differ by format and can change. As examples from YouTube’s guidance, H.264 is listed at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are recommendations, not guarantees that a connection will remain stable. YouTube also advises testing sustained upload speed; a connection that cannot consistently carry the chosen bitrate can cause interruptions even when the encoder settings otherwise match.

Check keyframes, rate control, and codecs

  • Set CBR and compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the output format.
  • Set the keyframe interval to two seconds and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum.
  • Confirm the selected video and audio codecs are among those YouTube lists for encoder streams.
  • Check the emitted resolution and frame rate as well as the command-line parameters; a mismatch can make the stream differ from the configuration you believe is live.

Test before relying on a long broadcast

  1. Run a representative preflight. Use the same source, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and network path planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
  2. Watch Live Control Room. Check stream health and read any messages while the test is running; they can point to ingest or encoding problems.
  3. Confirm local capture is progressing. If you are recording an archive, verify its file size continues to increase rather than assuming the encoder is receiving media.
  4. Test failover if you have a backup encoder. YouTube’s operational tips recommend stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet connection and checking that the player rolls to the backup. Do this in a controlled test, not during a broadcast that cannot be interrupted.
  5. Monitor audio and video continuously. A connected output does not by itself confirm that the program remains usable.

See YouTube live streaming tips for additional operational guidance.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely area to investigate Next action
HTTP source ends or drops, while YouTube output is otherwise intact HTTP input connection or source availability Check ffmpeg -h protocol=http and use supported HTTP reconnect options on that input. Confirm whether the source is expected to end at EOF.
RTMPS connection times out Destination URL, RTMPS support, or network path Copy the current destination from Live Control Room; verify the scheme and provided port, then inspect the timeout details.
SSL/TLS error when connecting Protocol scheme or secure destination configuration Verify that the URL uses rtmps when using YouTube’s secure destination, and use the port in the supplied URL where appropriate.
YouTube rejects the key or fails to receive the stream Stream key or selected destination Copy the current stream key and URL from Live Control Room; keep the key private and redact it from diagnostics.
Connection persists but stream health is poor Bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, frame rate, or upload capacity Compare actual output with YouTube’s current encoder table, use CBR and the two-second keyframe recommendation, and test sustained upload speed.
FFmpeg continues but the picture or audio freezes Source delivery, capture progress, or encoding path Check input logs and local archive growth, then monitor audio and video during a representative test.

What information is needed for a command-specific fix?

A responsible exact command depends on the FFmpeg version and build, the full command, the input URL scheme and protocol, and the exact error at the disconnect. Without those details, prescribing HTTP reconnect flags for a YouTube output risks addressing the wrong connection.
