If your FFmpeg YouTube Live stream has video but no sound, first confirm the source file contains the audio you want. Then check FFmpeg’s stream mapping and output codec before investigating YouTube or your connection. If the sound disappears only when the video repeats, inspect the loop seam separately: that is a different problem from a missing audio stream.
1. Confirm the source video has the audio track
Check the input’s stream listing before changing the YouTube settings. FFmpeg can only send audio that exists in the file, and a file may contain several audio streams with different languages or mixes.
Use ffmpeg -i input.mp4 to print the input details, or use a media probe to list its streams. Look for one or more audio streams and identify which contains the intended program sound. If the input lists only video, the source has no audio track; an encoder setting cannot recover sound that is not there.
2. Check that FFmpeg selects and sends the right audio
FFmpeg normally selects streams automatically, but explicit mapping can constrain what goes to the output. Its stream-selection documentation explains automatic selection and mapping. Check the command for these common causes:

-andisables audio selection or mapping for an output.- An explicit
-mapthat selects only video, or selects the wrong audio index, leaves the desired sound out. - With multiple inputs or outputs, options apply to the next input or output and are reset between files; make sure each option is placed where it controls the intended file.
For a file known to contain the wanted audio, this diagnostic pattern explicitly maps its first video and first audio stream and encodes audio as AAC:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative pattern, not a tested command or a guarantee for every media file, FFmpeg build, YouTube event, or ingest endpoint. Confirm the input’s stream indices and your current YouTube stream settings before using it. Keep the stream key private; do not publish it in a script, log, or screenshot.
-stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely; place it before the input it controls. -re reads a file at its native frame rate to pace packets, which is useful when sending a file to a live destination. Do not use a low read rate on a genuine live capture input, where FFmpeg warns it can cause packet loss. See the FFmpeg documentation for input pacing and advanced options.

3. Verify the output mapping and audio format
Read FFmpeg’s startup log. The Stream mapping lines and output summary should show the intended audio stream going to the output, rather than only a video stream. If the audio stream is absent from the mapping, return to the input indices and -map options; if it is present, continue by checking its codec and the YouTube preview.
For RTMP/RTMPS live ingest, YouTube’s live encoder settings list AAC or MP3 audio; the page says AAC is required for 5.1 surround. For stereo, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps audio. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every source or FFmpeg build will work unchanged. YouTube also recommends CBR video encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Check the current official guidance because settings can change.
Choose between copying and re-encoding audio
| Approach | When it can help | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream-copy audio | When the source audio is already compatible and you want to avoid additional encoding work. | Compatibility and behavior at the loop seam depend on the source encoding and container. |
| Re-encode audio to AAC | When you need a listed RTMP/RTMPS audio codec or want to test whether copying is related to an incompatibility. | It uses encoding resources and may introduce generational quality loss; it is not a universal fix. |
4. If the source has no audio
If the input has no audio stream, there is no original sound to restore. When sending silence is intentional, or a specific workflow requires an audio stream, FFmpeg can generate a silent track with the anullsrc audio source filter and map it into the output. A third-party FFmpeg looping tutorial demonstrates a stereo 44.1 kHz silent source encoded as AAC.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Generated silence is not a fix for missing music, speech, or other source sound. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists audio formats, but does not establish that every video-only feed is rejected, so do not add a silent track solely on that assumption.
5. Find where the sound disappears
Compare the sound at each point in the path so you can distinguish a source or encoder issue from a YouTube ingest or connection problem.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Play the original file locally. If it is silent there, check the file or select the correct audio track before streaming.
- Check FFmpeg’s log and local output or archive. Confirm the output mapping includes audio, then listen to the resulting recording if one is available.
- Check YouTube’s live preview and stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion representative of the real stream, and monitoring stream health. Inspect dashboard errors as well as the preview.
- Check system load and the outbound connection if the encoder output is sound. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance and streaming tips advise checking encoder output, CPU load, and network conditions. Provide sufficient outbound bandwidth with headroom and use a reliable connection.
If the local source or archive is silent, troubleshoot the media or FFmpeg routing. If the encoder output has audio but YouTube reports errors or interruptions, investigate stream health and outbound delivery rather than changing the source audio blindly.

6. If audio cuts out at the loop boundary
A file can have a valid audio stream and still produce a discontinuity when it repeats. Listen across several loop boundaries and check whether the cut consistently occurs at the same point. The seam can depend on the media’s structure, encoding, and FFmpeg version.
If the problem follows the seam, compare audio stream-copying with re-encoding audio to AAC, then retest the repeated section. A tutorial demonstrates this approach, but it does not establish a universal fix for every file or FFmpeg version. Also check that the source’s duration and audio/video alignment are suitable for repeating.
For an actual output interruption, FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer provides configurable retry and recovery behavior for output failures. That can address some connection or output failures; it cannot create omitted or missing program audio. Depending on configuration, recovery can also involve queueing or packet dropping.

7. Run the DIY stream safely before relying on it
- Test the command with a private or unlisted YouTube stream before using it for a public or long-running broadcast.
- Use a representative video and sound, then verify the live preview, stream health, and a local recording if available.
- Keep a backup of the source and protect the stream key. If the stream drops, check YouTube’s dashboard and FFmpeg logs before deciding whether the cause is audio, encoder load, or connectivity.
For a looped video, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream its audio and video. A live stream is not exempt from copyright rules, and a technically successful ingest does not establish that the content is cleared. YouTube’s encoder settings and guidance should be checked for current platform requirements.
