Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Configure constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS ingest. For SDR, use progressive Rec. 709 video at 8-bit. These are YouTube’s published targets; whether your computer can encode the chosen mode in real time depends on your hardware and workload.
Recommended YouTube settings for 4K H.264
libx264 produces H.264, so use YouTube’s H.264 bitrate recommendations—not the separate figures for AV1 or H.265. YouTube’s reviewed encoder guidance does not state a publication year for these figures.
| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | Two-second GOP at this frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 3840×2160 (4K), 30 fps | 42 Mbps | 60 frames |
| 3840×2160 (4K), 60 fps | 50 Mbps | 120 frames |
YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its other listed video settings include progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, and square pixels. For SDR, use Rec. 709 at 8-bit. YouTube says 4K streams use normal latency; its improve-for-low-latency option is unavailable for 4K. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for current recommendations.
Choose 4K30 or 4K60
Choose 60 fps when the source contains motion that benefits from smoother movement and your encoder and upload connection can sustain it. It has a higher recommended H.264 ingest bitrate than 30 fps and generally creates more encoding work. Choose 30 fps when it suits the source or better fits your system and available upload capacity. YouTube publishes the bitrate targets above, but does not provide a minimum CPU or GPU specification that guarantees real-time 4K encoding.

FFmpeg command for a 4K30 starting point
The command below illustrates a practical structure for a 3840×2160, 30 fps SDR source. Replace INPUT with the input path and replace the destination placeholder with the current RTMPS ingest address and stream key supplied for your YouTube stream. Do not publish or share a real stream key.
ffmpeg -re -i INPUT
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30
-b:v 42000k -maxrate 42000k -bufsize 84000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting example, not a tested universal preset or proof that its rate-control options produce a compliant CBR stream on every setup. FFmpeg measures -b:v in bits per second, so 42000k represents 42 Mbps. The example’s -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 express a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, or two seconds. FFmpeg documents libx264, the bitrate and preset options, and x264 keyframe options; its preset controls encoding speed/quality behavior. Consult the FFmpeg libx264 documentation for option details.
Adapt the command to 4K60 or another frame rate
For 4K60, use the YouTube H.264 target of 50 Mbps: set the video bitrate and maximum rate to 50000k, and use a two-second GOP of 120 frames, such as -g 120 -keyint_min 120. Do not change only the resolution while leaving the frame rate, bitrate, and GOP settings mismatched.

For fractional frame rates, calculate the GOP from the actual frame rate and check the encoded keyframe timestamps. The examples use integer rates and do not establish a universal treatment for every source or rate-control configuration. Select an appropriate frame rate for the input rather than assuming that forcing -r improves it.
Audio options
The example uses stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, which matches YouTube’s listed stereo guidance. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists AAC at 48 kHz and 384 kbps; adjust the audio codec, bitrate, sample rate, and channel layout to match the actual input and output. Do not label stereo audio as 5.1 or assume changing -ac can create genuine multichannel source audio.
Set up YouTube ingest without exposing your key
- Create or open the scheduled stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the stream-specific ingest information shown for that event or stream. Do not hard-code a generic destination copied from an example: YouTube’s Live Streaming API returns a primary ingest address and stream name, with a separate primary RTMPS address and optional backup address.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP carried across an encrypted SSL connection. The address must be the one YouTube supplies for your stream; the sample command’s destination is deliberately a placeholder. See FFmpeg’s RTMPS protocol documentation.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the intended local command or configuration. Do not paste it into public posts, screenshots, shared logs, or an article. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before using the stream again.
- Start FFmpeg, then check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended resolution and frame rate before going live to viewers. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. The API’s stream status can be
ready, active, inactive, orerror; a status alone does not identify the cause of a fault.
The API can accept 2160p and 30 fps, 60 fps, or automatic detection settings. Refer to the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams documentation for stream configuration and ingest fields.

Check the encode and connection before relying on the stream
- Confirm the actual output mode: verify that the source, FFmpeg output, and YouTube’s incoming resolution and frame rate agree. A 4K input does not prove that the outgoing stream is 4K.
- Watch the encoder while it runs: sustained overload, dropped frames, or failure to keep pace indicates that the computer may not be able to encode that workload in real time. The cited platform settings do not specify minimum hardware benchmarks.
- Check upload stability: YouTube’s recommendations establish target bitrates, not the extra upload capacity your network needs. Test from the actual location and connection, and leave practical headroom rather than assuming a speed-test result guarantees a stable stream.
- Inspect keyframes: the target interval is two seconds and must not exceed four seconds. For fractional rates or altered encoder settings, verify actual timestamps instead of relying only on a frame-count calculation.
- Check the YouTube stream state and health details: distinguish a configured stream from one actively receiving video, then use the displayed health information and FFmpeg output to investigate a specific error.
Troubleshoot common 4K FFmpeg problems
YouTube reports insufficient or unstable bitrate
Check that you selected the H.264 target for the chosen frame rate: 42 Mbps at 4K30 or 50 Mbps at 4K60. Confirm the outgoing bitrate and test upload stability at the streaming location. A matching configured bitrate cannot compensate for a connection that cannot sustain delivery.
The stream stutters, drops frames, or FFmpeg falls behind
The encoder may be unable to process the chosen resolution and frame rate in real time, or the network may be unstable. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s health details to distinguish encoding trouble from ingest trouble. Try 4K30 instead of 4K60 if it suits the source, or reduce the encoding workload and test again. The reviewed guidance does not establish a CPU/GPU model or preset that will work for every computer; -preset veryfast is only an example.
The stream arrives at the wrong resolution or frame rate
Check the input’s properties, FFmpeg’s output settings, and the mode shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends automatic detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom key. If you changed the frame rate, recalculate the two-second GOP and confirm the resulting keyframe cadence.

FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube shows no incoming video
Check that you copied the current stream-specific RTMPS address and matching key, that the stream is configured in YouTube, and that the outgoing network permits the connection. Do not reuse a placeholder or assume one permanent ingest URL. Compare the stream status and health details with FFmpeg’s connection output; the status values alone do not diagnose the cause.
Video works but audio is missing or wrong
Check whether the input actually contains audio, then verify that the selected output channel count, sample rate, codec, and bitrate match the intended stereo or 5.1 format. YouTube lists stereo AAC or MP3 at 44.1 kHz with 128 kbps recommended, and 5.1 AAC at 48 kHz with 384 kbps.
Copyright and monetization considerations
Technical compliance does not grant rights to the video or audio you stream. Use material you created or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before streaming. YouTube may also assess whether a channel’s content meets its monetization policies; simply looping a technically valid stream does not establish eligibility. Review YouTube’s current encoder guidance and your channel’s policy notices before an event or ongoing broadcast.
