For a conventional 1080p, 30 fps SDR stream to YouTube Live, use H.264 at a constant 14 Mbps, progressive 1920 × 1080 video, and a keyframe every 2 seconds. Use AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. To loop a playlist, feed an ordered concat list to FFmpeg, use -stream_loop -1 to repeat it, and use -re to pace file input for live streaming. The command below is a starting point, not a tested, universal preset: check your files, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream health before relying on it.

Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p30

YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies codec-dependent bitrate targets for 1080p at 30 fps. For H.264, it lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended. For AV1 and H.265, it lists 4 Mbps as the minimum and 10 Mbps as recommended. These are ingest recommendations, not a promise of identical picture quality across different source material or encoders. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for its current table.

Setting Conventional SDR H.264 starting point Notes
Video size and rate 1920 × 1080 progressive, 30 fps Use square pixels and Rec. 709 color for the documented SDR baseline.
Video codec and bitrate H.264; CBR around 14 Mbps YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30.
Keyframes Every 2 seconds YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a fixed 2-second GOP is 60 frames.
Pixel format and bit depth 8-bit, yuv420p Use the Rec. 709 SDR baseline; confirm source and encoder compatibility.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz YouTube’s documented recommendations for this setup.
Advanced H.264 settings CABAC; two B-frames; one reference frame These are among YouTube’s listed advanced settings. Confirm how your selected FFmpeg encoder exposes them.

If you choose AV1 or H.265 instead, YouTube’s 1080p30 guidance lists 10 Mbps recommended and 4 Mbps minimum for each. Encoder availability, hardware support, and compute capacity depend on your system; the bitrate target alone does not determine whether a particular machine can encode reliably.

Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the RTMPS ingest URL and its associated stream key from the stream setup. Use the actual values shown in your account; do not copy a key from an example or publish it in a command shared with others.
  3. By default, Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings. If you need to set resolution or frame rate manually, select a custom stream key with the desired settings in Live Control Room.
  4. Use RTMPS when supported, and keep the key private. If you believe it has been exposed, rotate it in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s stream setup guidance.

The FFmpeg output destination must be constructed for the RTMPS endpoint and key shown by YouTube. The destination string in the example below is deliberately a placeholder: follow the URL and key format supplied in your Live Control Room rather than assuming a particular format.

Build and loop an FFmpeg playlist

1. Create an ordered concat list

Make a text file such as playlist.txt with one file entry per line, in playback order:

file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'

Use paths that resolve from the directory where FFmpeg runs, or provide appropriate paths. The concat demuxer has safety rules for file paths. The example command uses -safe 0, which relaxes those checks; use it only with a playlist you control and understand. Consult the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation for the installed version’s exact behavior.

2. Start with a command shape and adapt it

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -r 30 -s 1920x1080
  -b:v 14M -minrate 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv 'RTMPS_URL_WITH_STREAM_KEY'

This illustrative command has not been tested against your files or FFmpeg build. Replace the destination with the endpoint and key details from Live Control Room, and verify the flags against the documentation for your installed version of FFmpeg. The command uses the H.264 14 Mbps recommended target, a 60-frame keyframe interval at 30 fps, and the documented AAC stereo baseline.

  • -re paces file reading at its native rate instead of letting FFmpeg process the inputs as fast as possible. It is appropriate when sending file-based media to a live destination.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so it appears before the relevant -i.
  • -f concat selects the concat demuxer, which reads the ordered playlist.
  • -r 30 and -s 1920x1080 set output frame rate and size in this example. Mixed source formats may need more deliberate filtering or normalization.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 express a 60-frame interval at 30 fps. Encoder-specific behavior can vary; verify the keyframe cadence in the output and stream health.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate set a target and bounds in this example, but do not by themselves prove that the chosen encoder is operating as YouTube expects for CBR. Check your encoder’s options and actual output.

FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes input option placement and other command behavior; check the documentation matching your installed version at FFmpeg’s command-line reference. Playlist looping, file pacing, and encoding are separate concerns. Do not assume that concat alone produces seamless transitions: timestamps, audio presence, dimensions, frame rates, codecs, and other properties can differ between files.

Choose stream copy or normalize the files

The example re-encodes video with libx264 and audio with AAC. That gives you an opportunity to produce a consistent output format, but it also requires the machine to encode continuously in real time. Whether files can instead be stream-copied depends on their codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio tracks, timestamps, and compatibility with the intended output. There is no universal answer for arbitrary playlists.

  • Before going live, inspect every file for readability, codec, resolution, frame rate, audio presence, and timestamp behavior.
  • If files differ, determine how to map or normalize video and audio for the output. The example does not address optional or missing audio, mixed dimensions, or timestamp repair.
  • Test representative clips and transitions. Confirm that the actual stream is stable and that audio remains usable across file boundaries.

Preflight and monitor the live stream

  • Confirm the playlist points to the intended files and that FFmpeg can read them all.
  • Check that the computer can sustain the selected encode in real time. Ensure sustained upload capacity exceeds the configured total stream bitrate with operational headroom; YouTube does not give one universal headroom factor in the cited guidance.
  • Run a test using representative motion and audio, then review YouTube’s stream health messages before depending on the stream.
  • Keep the stream key private. Rotate it in Live Control Room if it is compromised.

Troubleshoot common playlist-streaming problems

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg cannot open a playlist file Playlist path, working directory, quoting, or concat safety checks Confirm every listed file exists and is readable from the FFmpeg process. Review concat demuxer path rules; do not loosen safety checks for an untrusted playlist.
The output runs faster than real time File-input pacing Use -re before the relevant input so FFmpeg reads at native rate for a live destination.
The playlist does not repeat Loop option or input placement Confirm -stream_loop -1 is present before the concat input’s -i.
YouTube reports a key, connection, or ingest problem Wrong or exposed stream key, endpoint, or connection Copy the current RTMPS URL and associated key from Live Control Room, check the destination construction, and rotate an exposed key.
Video or audio becomes inconsistent at a file boundary Different codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio tracks, or timestamps Inspect the affected files and normalize or map them deliberately. The concat list alone does not guarantee seamless transitions.
Encoding falls behind or the stream becomes unstable Real-time encode capacity or sustained upload capacity Test the target settings with representative material; check encoder load and YouTube stream health. Verify that the upload connection can sustain the configured bitrate plus operational headroom.
The picture does not match the intended output settings Source properties, scaling, frame-rate conversion, or encoder behavior Inspect the output and consult the documentation for the installed FFmpeg build and chosen encoder. A simple size or frame-rate flag may not adequately handle every mixed-source playlist.

Copyright and YouTube policy checks

A technically valid stream is not automatically cleared for broadcast or monetization. Before looping recordings, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music, and other material, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and monetization rules. Repeated or reused material can raise policy questions independent of the FFmpeg settings; encoding choices do not establish permission or eligibility. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid, and confirm current requirements with YouTube.
