For an unattended audio relay from an Icecast mountpoint to YouTube Live, FFmpeg is the better-documented fit. It can read network inputs and send output to an RTMP destination. OBS makes more sense when you need to build and operate a visual scene, but the official OBS material reviewed here does not establish a universal, version-specific procedure for using an Icecast URL as an audio source. Neither route has been tested here; check your feed format and validate the complete stream before relying on it.
What each part of the setup does
An Icecast-to-YouTube relay connects three separate systems. Icecast serves the audio at a mountpoint; an encoder receives that feed and prepares an output; YouTube Live receives that output at its ingest address using a stream key.
- Icecast input: The feed is available at a mountpoint URL. The server configuration may require its hostname or address, port, mountpoint path, and source credentials.
- Encoder: FFmpeg or OBS receives or selects the audio and prepares the output for YouTube. The source URL and the destination settings belong to different systems.
- YouTube output: YouTube Live Control Room supplies the ingest URL and stream key. YouTube advises waiting for the preview, checking the stream, and then starting the event through Live Control Room.
The Icecast source password is not the YouTube stream key. Treat both as private credentials.
FFmpeg vs OBS: which should you choose?
| Need | Better starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Headless, repeatable audio relay | FFmpeg | Its documentation covers network inputs and output URLs, including RTMP. The installed build still needs to support your particular Icecast stream format. |
| Visual layout, artwork, visualizer, or interactive scene control | OBS | OBS is a production and encoding application, but the official material reviewed here did not verify exact Icecast URL input steps. Confirm the procedure with your OBS version and feed format. |
This is a documentation-based recommendation, not a comparative test. No CPU, latency, quality, or reliability benchmark was performed. The right implementation also depends on whether your Icecast feed is MP3, AAC, Ogg/Opus, or another format; whether the audio can pass through or must be transcoded; and whether your YouTube ingest setup needs a video track. An audio-only source may need a still image, slate, or other video component, but the cited guidance does not establish a universal way to construct that output.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When FFmpeg is the stronger fit
Choose FFmpeg if the primary job is to relay audio without an operator managing scenes, or if you need a scriptable process with control over stream mapping and encoding. Its protocol documentation establishes the relevant network-input and RTMP-output capabilities, but not a single command guaranteed to work with every mountpoint, authentication method, codec, or operating system. Confirm those details before building a production command.
When OBS is the stronger fit
Choose OBS if the broadcast needs a person to arrange visuals, switch sources, or manage scenes. First verify that your installed release can open your particular Icecast URL as an audio source. Do not assume that menu names or behavior are identical across versions and operating systems. Check for audio in the YouTube preview before relying on the setup.

Set up and validate the YouTube side
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. For stereo audio, the guidance lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Match the output to YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen codec and profile rather than treating a bitrate as universal.
| H.264 video setting | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published configuration recommendations, not performance guarantees or results from an independent test. Its guidance recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. Video bitrate needs depend on the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; consult YouTube’s current table for the exact profile.

Preflight checklist
- Confirm the Icecast hostname, port, mountpoint path, source format, and any required feed credentials.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the event’s ingest URL and intended stream key. Use the selected protocol and keep the key private.
- Check the encoder output against YouTube’s current codec, audio, video, bitrate, and keyframe guidance. Prefer RTMPS when supported.
- Run a private or scheduled test with representative audio. Confirm audio is present and appropriately leveled, inspect the YouTube preview and stream health, and make sure the connection has upload headroom.
- Monitor the broadcast and have a plan for a feed disconnect, encoder restart, or stream-key rotation. YouTube Live Control Room allows a compromised key to be reset.
Common problems and what to check
- The encoder cannot open the feed: Recheck the hostname, port, mountpoint spelling, and any required Icecast authentication. Then confirm that the installed encoder build supports the feed’s actual format.
- YouTube receives video but no audio: Verify that the encoder is reading the intended Icecast URL and mapping its audio into the outgoing stream. Check the YouTube preview before starting the event.
- The stream is rejected or unhealthy: Compare the output protocol, codecs, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current ingest guidance. If supported by your setup, use RTMPS.
- The connection becomes unstable: Check whether upload capacity has the recommended 20% headroom, then review YouTube stream health and the source connection.
- The stream stops after a credential change: Confirm that the encoder has the current YouTube stream key and that it is using the intended ingest details. If the key may be compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos; it does not relay a live Icecast mountpoint or go live from a camera. If your goal is instead to loop prerecorded video on YouTube, its cloud service lets you upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
