What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For most creators putting a prepared animated story into a conventional YouTube Live scene, start with OBS Studio: its Media Source has a Loop control and combines playback, scene composition and stream controls in a graphical interface. Choose FFmpeg when you need a repeatable command-line pipeline for conversion, filtering or unattended automation. Neither tool is established as universally faster or better-performing; the practical choice depends on how you want to build and operate the stream.
Choose based on how you want to run the broadcast
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Load one prepared animation, arrange a scene and operate a conventional broadcast through a GUI | OBS Studio | Media Source handles common video and animation formats, and its properties include a Loop control. Scene composition and stream controls are in the same application. OBS Media Sources; OBS overview |
| Automate a repeatable media pipeline, or convert, combine or filter content before streaming | FFmpeg | It provides command-line media conversion and filtering and documents input-loop and GIF-loop behavior. The exact invocation depends on the source and output protocol. FFmpeg documentation; FFmpeg formats documentation |
| Run a playlist inside an OBS scene | OBS with VLC Video source | OBS documents playlist looping for its VLC Video source. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources |
These are workflow recommendations based on documented features, not results from a direct performance test. Your operating system, OBS version, local FFmpeg build, available encoder, source format and stable upload capacity all affect setup.
Loop an animated story in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or add one in the Scenes panel.
- Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + → Media Source, create a source or choose an existing one, then browse to the local animation file. OBS lists Media Source availability on Windows, macOS and Linux; supported extensions include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. OBS Media Sources
- Enable looping. In the Media Source properties, turn on Loop. It is off by default; with it enabled, playback starts again when the file ends. Check the preview to confirm the animation fits the canvas and plays as intended.
- Compose the scene. Resize and position the source, and add any other scene elements you need. If you need a playlist rather than one file, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist and loop behavior; install VLC first and match its architecture to OBS.
- Configure and test the stream. Set the YouTube stream destination and key in OBS’s stream settings, then run a test before the intended broadcast. Confirm that the file loops, audio behaves as expected, and the connection remains stable. OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before a first stream. OBS overview
Bitrate and connection stability
There is no single bitrate to prescribe without knowing the selected resolution, encoder, upload capacity and ingest protocol. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance notes that dropped frames can mean the connection cannot sustain the chosen bitrate; lowering video bitrate may help. Use a rate your connection can sustain steadily and check the current YouTube Live guidance for the protocol and stream configuration you are using. OBS dropped frames troubleshooting
Loop with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a stronger fit when the animation is part of a command-driven pipeline—for example, when you must convert or filter media, or launch a configured process as part of an automated workflow. It documents input loop options and GIF behavior, but a correct command depends on whether the source is a GIF, a video file or an image sequence, as well as the output protocol. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg build installed on your machine before relying on a particular option. FFmpeg documentation; FFmpeg formats documentation
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
There is no one safe, exact command to give without those details: a command for a GIF is not necessarily the right command for a video file or sequence, and the streaming output must match the YouTube ingest method you configure. Identify the source type and protocol first, then use the relevant FFmpeg options and test the output before broadcasting. Unlike OBS’s scene-based workflow, an automated FFmpeg setup also needs an external way to supervise and restart the process if that is required; process supervision is an operational choice, not a built-in FFmpeg monitoring feature established here.
Use YouTube settings for the protocol you actually selected
YouTube’s official DASH delivery guide is specific to DASH ingestion. It recommends a closed GOP of about two seconds and requires the GOP to be less than eight seconds. Those figures are not universal YouTube encoder settings: that guide does not establish the settings for a standard RTMP workflow. Confirm the ingest protocol in YouTube Live and follow the current guidance for that protocol rather than applying DASH requirements to RTMP. YouTube Live DASH ingestion guide

Common problems and fixes
- The animation stops at the end. In OBS, reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop; the option is off by default. For FFmpeg, verify that the loop option matches the source type and installed build.
- An OBS playlist source is unavailable or fails to work. Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. The OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS.
- OBS reports dropped frames. The connection may not sustain the selected video bitrate. Test stability and reduce bitrate if needed, while checking the platform guidance for your chosen ingest method. OBS dropped frames troubleshooting
- A stream setting copied from a guide does not fit your setup. Check whether the advice is for DASH or RTMP and follow the guidance for the protocol actually selected. The cited GOP figures apply to DASH, not all YouTube Live workflows.
- FFmpeg does not loop the expected content. Confirm whether the input is a GIF, video or image sequence and check the loop option’s behavior in the documentation for your installed FFmpeg build.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep an uploaded story looping on YouTube without leaving a computer and OBS or FFmpeg running at home, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. The setup is to upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home for the stream to continue.
- Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required; that is one free day per account.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or the plan details, then start your free day.
