For a 720p YouTube Live stream from an Indian VPS, start with H.264 video at a constant 6 Mbps, AAC stereo audio at 128 Kbps, and a keyframe every two seconds. Send the stream to YouTube over RTMPS on port 443 using the exact ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. These are practical starting settings—not a guarantee that a particular VPS can encode or upload reliably.
Recommended 720p settings
YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended video bitrate for both 720p30 and 720p60. A 6 Mbps target is a reasonable starting point within that range, but it is not a tested optimum for every video, encoder, or VPS. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced audio guidance lists 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz for stereo audio. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance should be checked for the latest recommendations.
| Setting | Starting choice | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280×720 | 720p ingestion is supported; choose the frame rate to suit the content and the VPS encoder capacity. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Use 60 fps if smoother motion matters and the VPS can encode it in real time. |
| Video codec and rate | H.264, CBR, 6 Mbps | YouTube lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended for 720p30 and 720p60. |
| Keyframes | Every 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | A suitable starting configuration for stereo audio. |
| Ingest | RTMPS, port 443 | Use the exact stream-specific endpoint and key supplied by YouTube. |
These figures are YouTube platform recommendations, not measurements of Indian VPS performance. YouTube recommends running an upload speed test; test from the VPS and network path you intend to use.
Example FFmpeg command for a prerecorded file
This template loops an MP4 at normal playback speed, scales it to 1280×720, encodes 30 fps H.264 and stereo AAC, and sends it to YouTube. Replace input.mp4 with your file and the quoted output placeholder with your exact RTMPS ingest URL and stream key. The example has not been tested on a particular VPS.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-vf "scale=1280:720,fps=30,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency
-b:v 6000k -minrate 6000k -maxrate 6000k -bufsize 12000k
-g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv 'RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
At 30 fps, a GOP of 60 frames gives a two-second keyframe interval. For 720p60, change the filter to fps=60 and set -g 120 -keyint_min 120 for the same two-second interval. Use 60 fps only if it suits the source and the VPS sustains real-time encoding.
The output placeholder is not a literal YouTube address. Get the current endpoint and key from YouTube Live Control Room or the Live Streaming API. YouTube documents RTMPS ingestion and port 443 in its RTMPS ingestion guide. Keep the key private: do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or article.

Adapt the command to your source
Prerecorded file
The example assumes a file input. -re reads the file at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible, and -stream_loop -1 repeats it indefinitely. Remove looping if you want the stream to end when the file ends.
Live capture or network input
For a capture device or an already-live network input, adapt or omit -re and -stream_loop; those options are for the prerecorded-file example. FFmpeg supports file, pipe, network, and capture-device inputs, and its stream-mapping options can help when automatic stream selection is unsuitable. See the FFmpeg documentation for input and stream selection behavior.

Resolution and frame-rate choices
Choose 30 fps for ordinary motion when lower encoding demand is useful; choose 60 fps when the content benefits from smoother motion and the VPS can keep up. YouTube lists the same H.264 bitrate recommendation for both 720p frame rates, but that does not mean every encoder produces identical quality or uses identical compute resources. YouTube says automatic detection is the default and recommended behavior for stream resolution and frame rate; a custom stream key can instead specify them. Confirm the stream’s actual settings and health in Live Control Room.
Prepare and test the Indian VPS
- Check real-time encoding capacity. Confirm that the selected VPS can sustain the chosen resolution, frame rate, and encoder preset. There is no universal vCPU or RAM requirement established for this workload; performance varies with the FFmpeg build, source, preset, and number of streams.
- Measure upload from the VPS. Run a speed test on the actual VPS path and confirm stable outbound capacity above the combined video and audio bitrate, with headroom for variation. YouTube explicitly recommends an upload speed test in its encoder guidance.
- Use YouTube’s current RTMPS details. Copy the exact ingest endpoint and stream key from Live Control Room or the Live Streaming API, and use port 443. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over an encrypted SSL connection in its protocol documentation.
- Test representative material. Check the stream with audio and motion like the planned broadcast, then watch YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs.
- Respond to health warnings. If YouTube flags bitrate, audio, or GOP configuration, inspect the status details and adjust the relevant encoder setting. The Live Streaming API documentation describes health status and configuration issues.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Technical compliance does not grant permission to broadcast the video or audio. Use material you own or have permission to stream, including music, background tracks, and third-party clips. A prerecorded video sent through FFmpeg is still a YouTube live broadcast; check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream policies before going live. A stream’s ability to connect is not evidence that its content is authorized or eligible to remain available.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube reports unstable or low bitrate: Test upload from the VPS itself, check for competing traffic, and verify that the network can sustain video plus audio bitrate with headroom. Do not assume an Indian server location guarantees a good route to YouTube’s ingest.
- Encoding falls behind or the stream stutters: Check whether FFmpeg is keeping up with real time. Try 30 fps instead of 60, or a less demanding x264 preset, then test again with representative content. A generic VPS size cannot guarantee a result.
- Video has the wrong dimensions or frame rate: Check the filter and chosen stream key settings. The example explicitly scales to 1280×720 and sets 30 fps; the 60 fps variant requires both the filter and GOP values to change.
- Audio is missing or unsuitable: Confirm that the input contains the intended audio stream and that FFmpeg selects it. Check AAC encoding, stereo channels, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz; use explicit stream mapping if automatic selection chooses the wrong stream.
- Connection fails: Recheck the full endpoint and key, ensure RTMPS is used, and confirm outbound access on port 443. Treat the key as a secret and regenerate it in YouTube if it has been exposed.
- YouTube flags keyframe or stream configuration: Verify the GOP duration against the frame rate: 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps gives two seconds. Review YouTube’s health details and its current encoder recommendations.
Indian VPS limits and cost considerations
An Indian VPS location alone does not establish sufficient CPU capacity or a reliable route to a YouTube ingest server. YouTube’s official guidance specifies stream-side encoding and connection recommendations, but it does not specify a named Indian VPS provider or the compute resources required for this exact FFmpeg workload. Validate the actual provider plan, region, sustained outbound capacity, usage terms, and stream performance before relying on it.
For a self-managed VPS, account for the hosting plan and any bandwidth or usage charges alongside the time required to install, monitor, and recover the stream. No provider-specific price or performance claim is made here.
