There is no single Android recording format to change without inspecting the files. First identify what “playlist” means: an FFmpeg concat list, an HLS .m3u8 manifest, or a YouTube playlist of separate videos. Then use ffprobe to inspect the recordings and choose stream-copy concatenation only when their streams are compatible; otherwise normalize them with the concat filter and re-encode.
Identify which playlist is stopping
These three playlist types fail for different reasons, so do not start by changing a filename extension:
- FFmpeg concat list: a text file listing media files for the concat demuxer, often used with
-f concat. - HLS playlist: a
.m3u8manifest referencing media segments. The manifest, segment paths, container, or contained audio/video samples may be involved. - YouTube playlist: a collection of separately uploaded videos. That is not an FFmpeg concat list or an HLS manifest; the workflows below apply only if FFmpeg is processing the actual media files or HLS assets.
Note where playback stops. A stop exactly at a clip boundary points toward a concat compatibility issue; a stop at a particular HLS segment can also indicate an absent, incomplete, or unsupported segment. Neither symptom alone identifies the cause.
Inspect every recording with ffprobe
Run this on each file, including the two clips immediately before and after the point where playback fails:

- -convert most commonly seen video formats to mp4 or h.264
- -reduce video file size to send out through SMS etc. (Reduce size profile)
- -convert video while keep original video quality (Keep quality profile)
- -advanced mode to specify video bitrate, arbitrary resolution, audio bitrate, codec etc. (Manual profile)
ffprobe -hide_banner -i phone1.mp4Repeat with the actual filename for each recording. Compare the detected container and the stream details—not just the extension:
- Number and order of audio and video streams.
- Video codec and profile, dimensions, frame rate, and pixel format.
- Audio codec, sample rate, and channel layout.
- Duration and timestamps, especially around the failing boundary.
Files with the same extension are not necessarily encoded with the same streams or parameters. Conversely, an extension such as .mp4, .3gp, .ts, or .webm does not by itself establish which codec a phone recording contains. The actual difference in a particular case can only be determined from its metadata and logs.

Android’s MediaRecorder API documents several possible output formats. Its specific warning is conditional: when using H.263 video with AMR audio, it recommends 3GP, noting that MPEG-4 in that combination may confuse some desktop players. That does not establish that your phone or recording app used that combination. The API overview also says MPEG-2 TS support was added in Android 8.0 (API level 26) and describes TS as useful for streaming; it does not show that a particular recording was made as TS.
Fix an FFmpeg concat-list workflow
FFmpeg has distinct concat approaches: the concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding when the input streams are suitable, while the concat filter is the appropriate approach when re-encoding is needed. The FFmpeg FAQ describes the concat filter as recommended when re-encoding is needed. Do not use stream copy as a workaround for mismatched inputs without checking the output.

Try stream copy only for compatible inputs
If the recordings have matching stream layouts and parameters, a concat demuxer list can be used with stream copy. Create a text file such as clips.txt, with one line per file:
file 'phone1.mp4'
file 'phone2.mp4'Then run:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i clips.txt -c copy joined.mp4Use this only after inspecting the files. If the output still stops or FFmpeg reports stream or timestamp errors, do not assume the extension is the problem; proceed to a normalized re-encode.

Normalize with the concat filter when streams differ
For two video-only inputs, the following illustrates the filter-based shape. It is not a tested fix for unspecified recordings: adapt it to the actual input dimensions, audio presence, and desired output settings.

-map "[v]" -c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p normalized.mp4If both files contain audio, include and map audio inputs in the concat filter as well. If the audio layouts differ, normalize them before concatenation. Do not use the video-only example unchanged when audio must be retained.

Check an HLS playlist and its segments
If the failing object is HLS, inspect the exact .m3u8 file and the segment at the point where playback stops:
- Confirm each referenced URI resolves and that the corresponding segment exists and is complete.
- Inspect the segment container and its contained audio and video sample formats.
- Check support in the actual Android playback app. Android’s Media3 HLS guide explains that HLS container support is not enough: the contained audio and video sample formats must also be supported.
- If FFmpeg is generating multiple HLS variants, check the output filename pattern. FFmpeg’s HLS documentation requires
%vin the pattern when generating two or more variants. This requirement is relevant only to multi-variant output.
A valid-looking manifest or familiar file extension does not prove that every segment is present or that the Android player supports its samples.
Re-test the repaired output and collect useful evidence
- Run
ffprobe -hide_banner -i normalized.mp4(or the filename of your output) and confirm its streams and duration. - Play through the exact boundary that previously failed in the target Android app.
- Review FFmpeg’s output for stream, timestamp, or missing-file errors. For HLS, include the manifest and the relevant segment reference.
- If the failure persists, record the Android version and playback app, the full FFmpeg command, the first useful error line, and
ffprobeoutput for the adjacent clips. For HLS, include the relevant playlist text. Those details distinguish a stream-compatibility issue from a missing path, segment, or player-support problem.
