Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your video files have matching streams and you want FFmpeg to play them in sequence, often without re-encoding. Use the concat filter when clips need filtering, normalization, or re-encoding. Neither method by itself creates a YouTube playlist URL: after preparing the sequence, send an appropriately encoded live feed to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room.

Choose the method that fits your files

Method Use it when Main constraint
Concat demuxer Files have matching stream layouts and codecs, and you want to process them in sequence. It can often use stream copy. All files must have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. Duration metadata affects timestamps; inaccurate durations can cause gaps or artifacts. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation
Concat filter Clips need filtering, normalization, or a consistent re-encoded output. It decodes, filters, and encodes the material; a stream-copy operation cannot apply filters. FFmpeg recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed. FFmpeg FAQ · FFmpeg stream-copy documentation
Concat protocol A specific format supports file-level concatenation. Format-dependent; FFmpeg lists MPEG-1, MPEG-2 program stream, and DV as examples. It is not the general-purpose playlist method. FFmpeg FAQ

Do not assume the demuxer can seamlessly join arbitrary files with different codecs, resolutions, time bases, or numbers of audio and video streams. Inspect the inputs first. If their layouts differ, prepare consistent outputs with a filter/transcode workflow before streaming.

Make a playlist file for the concat demuxer

Create a plain-text file such as playlist.txt, with one file directive per input:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'segment-01.mp4'
file 'segment-02.mp4'
file 'segment-03.mp4'

For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line: do not add spaces before it or a byte-order mark. Quote or escape paths that contain spaces or special characters. The demuxer reads the files in order and adjusts timestamps so the first starts at zero and each later file follows the preceding file’s duration. The operation applies globally, so streams with unequal lengths can have gaps. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation

Try stream copy when the streams match

This example joins the playlist into a file without decoding and re-encoding:

ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.txt -c copy joined-output.mkv

It illustrates the demuxer and stream-copy path; it is not a universal YouTube command. The output container must support the selected streams, and the inputs must be compatible. Because -c copy does not decode the media, it cannot apply filters or change the encoding to meet YouTube ingest settings. If the output needs different resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, or audio settings, use an encoding workflow instead. FFmpeg stream-copy documentation

Check durations if the join has timestamp problems

The demuxer uses file durations to calculate where subsequent files begin. If stored duration metadata is inaccurate or unavailable, the concat script can include a duration directive for the affected file. An incorrect override can also cause artifacts, so use a verified duration rather than guessing. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation

Use the concat filter when clips need processing

The filter workflow takes each clip as a separate input, joins decoded streams with a concat filter in -filter_complex, maps the resulting video and audio labels, then encodes and muxes the output. The exact graph depends on the clip count and which streams each input contains. Do not copy a command that assumes stream indices or audio tracks you have not checked. This approach is appropriate when you need to normalize or filter clips, or when YouTube-facing output settings require a re-encode. FFmpeg FAQ · FFmpeg stream-copy documentation

Configure the YouTube Live feed separately

A concat script is a local FFmpeg input list, not a YouTube playlist URL or an HLS manifest. Once FFmpeg can produce the sequence, configure the live encoder for YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and use the Stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public examples and out of the playlist file. YouTube: manage live stream settings

Match codec, bitrate, and frame rate

  • YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps.
  • Bitrate settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube’s current table lists 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Check the table for the output you actually use before streaming.
  • YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). This is an ingest recommendation, not a default guaranteed by FFmpeg.

Set keyframes and audio to YouTube’s guidance

  • Use a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s recommendation; do not exceed four seconds.
  • YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.
  • For stereo, YouTube’s advanced audio recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1, it is 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
  • YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP.

These recommendations are separate from the concat choice. If your sources already match but their encoded settings are unsuitable for the live feed, stream copy will preserve those settings rather than correct them. YouTube live encoder guidance

Common problems and fixes

  • FFmpeg rejects an input or the join breaks: compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. The demuxer requires matching streams; normalize differing inputs with a filter/transcode workflow.
  • There are timestamp gaps, jumps, or artifacts at a boundary: check each file’s duration metadata and the actual stream lengths. A verified duration directive can override inaccurate or missing stored duration, but a wrong value can create its own artifacts.
  • A filter cannot be applied: remove stream copy and use a decode/filter/encode pipeline; copied packets cannot be filtered.
  • YouTube does not accept the live feed: verify that FFmpeg is using the Stream URL and key from Live Control Room, then check the output codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio against YouTube’s current guidance.
  • The stream key appears in logs or a shared command: treat it as compromised and replace it in Live Control Room before streaming again. YouTube describes the key as functioning like the stream’s password and address.

Run FFmpeg yourself or let a cloud service keep the stream live

Running FFmpeg on your own computer gives you direct control of the playlist and encoding, but the computer and connection have to remain available for the stream to continue. For a different setup, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded-video YouTube channel live: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos rather than streaming from a camera.
