Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when your clips have compatible streams and you want to join them without re-encoding. Use the concat filter when clips need normalization, filtering, or re-encoding. Neither choice, by itself, guarantees a seamless loop or a reliable YouTube Live stream: check the files, test the boundaries, and configure the output for YouTube’s current encoder guidance.

Which FFmpeg concat method should you use?

Your situation Start with Reason
All clips expose matching streams, codecs, and time bases, and you want to avoid re-encoding Concat demuxer It joins packets virtually, making it the no-re-encode route for compatible inputs. FFmpeg documentation and the FFmpeg FAQ describe this use.
Clips need re-encoding, normalization, or filter processing Concat filter FFmpeg recommends the filter approach when re-encoding is needed. FFmpeg FAQ
You are unsure whether the files are compatible, or durations may be inaccurate Inspect and test before selecting The demuxer’s stream requirements and timestamp adjustments can affect continuity. FFmpeg documentation

The choice is about how clips are joined. Looping the result, encoding it for YouTube, and keeping the live session healthy are separate concerns.

How the concat demuxer works—and where it can fail

The concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets consecutively, as if they had been muxed together. It shifts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and later files follow it. This is useful when you want to avoid another lossy encoding generation, but it is not a way to make unlike files compatible.

Compatibility checks

FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Before relying on the demuxer, compare the stream layout and relevant codec parameters across every clip. Differences such as resolution, frame rate, audio layout, or other stream properties may make the inputs unsuitable; inspect them against the requirements of your installed FFmpeg version rather than assuming that similar-looking files will concatenate cleanly.

  • 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.

Timestamp handling matters too. The demuxer adjusts timestamps globally, and FFmpeg warns that this can create gaps when streams within files do not have exactly matching lengths. Incorrect or estimated durations can also produce artifacts. The concat list’s duration directive can override a file duration, but use it only when you know the intended duration.

What “no re-encode” does not promise

A successful command does not prove the joins are seamless. A clip can end or begin with a pause, audio tail, abrupt cut, or mismatched content; timestamp differences can add another discontinuity. Review the joined output, including audio and the last-to-first transition, or run a private/test stream before relying on it live.

When the concat filter is the better choice

The concat filter decodes inputs and allows them to be processed and encoded as a common output. Choose it when the clips need normalization or filters, or when their differences make packet-level concatenation inappropriate. The trade-off is that the output must be encoded again, which takes processing and can affect quality depending on the chosen encoder settings.

Elgato 4K S Capture Card for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2
  • 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
  • HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240

  • Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
  • Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input

FFmpeg’s FAQ states that the concat filter is recommended when re-encoding is needed, while the demuxer is the appropriate route when avoiding re-encoding is the goal and the inputs meet its constraints. That is the useful dividing line: compatibility and copy-through favor the demuxer; required transformations favor the filter.

Prepare a playlist for a looping live stream

  1. Check the installed FFmpeg build and inputs. Confirm the version and inspect each clip’s streams, codecs, time bases, durations, and audio/video layout. No universal compatibility verdict is possible without the actual files and build.
  2. Choose the join method. Use the demuxer for compatible inputs when avoiding re-encoding; use the filter if you need to normalize or process clips.
  3. Test a finite output first. Review the order, joins, audio, and timing. Specifically test the final clip back to the first one; a correct concatenation does not itself establish correct looping.
  4. Verify loop behavior for your exact command and FFmpeg version. Loop options and their placement depend on the input arrangement. Check the installed FFmpeg help or documentation and test a finite run; do not assume a generic loop command applies to every concat setup.
  5. Configure and test the YouTube output. Choose a supported video/audio codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the encoder mode you actually use, then verify stream health before treating it as a long-running broadcast.

The exact loop command is not established for every FFmpeg build and playlist arrangement. Test the behavior at both ordinary clip boundaries and the last-to-first boundary before leaving the stream unattended.

Set YouTube encoder settings for the output

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). Use the platform’s current encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you select.

  • Example H.264 bitrates: YouTube’s table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of performance on a particular connection or encoder.
  • Upload capacity: YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. A configured bitrate that consumes the full sustainable upload rate leaves no room for network variation.
  • Encrypted transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS.

These figures are YouTube guidance as accessed October 3, 2026, not measurements of an FFmpeg command. Select bitrate for the actual output mode and sustainable connection, and test with motion and audio before going live. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring stream health and messages.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
  2. Enter those values in your encoder’s output configuration. Treat the stream key as a password; do not publish it in a command screenshot, log, or public post.
  3. Start with a test or private broadcast and check YouTube’s stream-health messages, audio, and video before making the stream public.

YouTube’s encoder workflow is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a loop intended to run longer, do not assume that YouTube will archive the entire continuous session as one complete video.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to inspect What to do
Concat demuxer rejects a file or output has missing streams Inputs do not expose the same streams or compatible codec/time-base properties Inspect every input and compare stream layouts. If the clips need normalization or re-encoding, use the concat filter route.
Gap, jump, or artifact at a clip boundary Timestamp adjustment, inaccurate duration, or the media content at the cut Review the affected clip durations and boundary content; test the joined output. Use a known duration override only when appropriate, or normalize through a filter workflow.
The playlist ends instead of repeating Looping behavior or option placement for the specific input and FFmpeg build Check the installed version’s help/documentation and run a finite test that crosses the final-to-first transition.
YouTube reports unstable stream health Output settings or insufficient upload headroom Check the selected codec, CBR bitrate, keyframe interval, and available upload capacity; YouTube recommends 20% headroom. Test and monitor health messages.
The broadcast connection does not start Incorrect stream URL/key or encoder output configuration Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room again, check the output configuration, and protect the key.
A very long broadcast is not one complete archive YouTube archive duration behavior Plan around YouTube’s statement that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume an indefinite loop will appear as one complete archived video.

Copyright and reused-content checks still apply

Using FFmpeg to repeat prerecorded files does not establish that you have the rights to stream them or that the channel complies with YouTube policies. Confirm that you have permission for the video and all included audio, and review YouTube’s rules for the content and monetization outcomes you want. A technically healthy stream is not a copyright or monetization clearance.
