Festo’s smart-robotics push could compete for automation projects at factories that also use SMC equipment, but the available evidence does not show that Festo designed it specifically to target SMC. Festo’s GripperAI focuses on flexible handling of mixed, unfamiliar products, while its AX software monitors motion equipment and provides industrial data access. SMC’s 2025 public reporting documents pneumatic automation, robotics education and technology demonstrations, but does not establish a directly equivalent SMC bin-picking product. That is a comparison of documented capabilities—not proof that one supplier is better overall.

Is Festo’s smart-robotics technology aimed at SMC?

There is no evidence in the cited company materials that Festo named SMC as the target of its smart-robotics products. The more useful question for a factory is whether Festo’s software and handling tools solve a problem that its existing automation setup does not.

Festo’s 2026 GripperAI announcement describes software for handling changing product mixes with less manual setup. Its 2025 materials describe AX applications for machine monitoring, energy insights and data access. SMC’s 2025 integrated report, by contrast, highlights pneumatic automation, robotics education and demonstrations. These sources support a capability comparison, but not a conclusion about competitive intent, market share or relative performance.

What does GripperAI do for mixed-product picking?

Festo describes GripperAI as software for robots handling mixed, unfamiliar and randomly positioned products. Instead of relying on extensive programming or a stored template for every product, the software calculates a gripping point, selects an available vacuum or mechanical gripper, and can recalculate after an unsuccessful pick. Festo says it runs locally on an industrial PC connected to a 3D camera and path controller, and is designed to work with most industrial robots, cobots and Cartesian handling systems.

Festo’s 2026 announcement names logistics, packaging and manufacturing as target settings. In its Würth example, a tool station with vacuum and mechanical grippers handles items ranging from small USB sticks to boxes weighing 44 lb (20 kg). This is a vendor-described application, not an independently measured benchmark for pick success, speed or uptime.

How do the documented capabilities compare?

Buying question Festo evidence SMC evidence
Mixed-SKU picking GripperAI selects grip points and available tools, with retry logic after an unsuccessful pick, according to Festo’s 2026 announcement. A directly equivalent product is not established by the cited SMC 2025 integrated report.
Robot and system integration Festo says GripperAI is designed for most industrial robots, cobots and Cartesian systems, using an industrial PC, 3D camera and path controller. Comparable robot-compatibility details for a competing AI picking system are not stated in the cited SMC report.
Equipment monitoring Festo’s AX Motion Insights Electric and Pneumatic monitor motion equipment for wear and anomalies; AX Data Access translates protocols to MQTT. Festo says the pneumatic app can monitor its own and third-party cylinders. The cited report documents pneumatic automation and a wireless auto-switch demonstration, but does not specify a comparable AI condition-monitoring platform.
Robotics ecosystem Festo announced a 2020 partnership with MassRobotics to engage robotics and automation startups. Its 2025 Didactic announcement describes a MecLab cobot station developed with Dobot and says more than 50 students compete annually in the mechatronics category at SkillsUSA. SMC’s 2025 report describes sponsorship of ABU Robocon and other robotics education and technology-dissemination activity, as well as participation in Future Creation Robot Week at Expo 2025 Osaka with a wireless auto-switch demonstration.
Independent performance or cost comparison Not stated in the cited materials. Not stated in the cited materials.

Can Festo AX reduce downtime in pneumatic and electric systems?

AX is intended to help identify equipment wear or anomalies before they become more disruptive failures. Festo’s 2025 Pack Expo announcement describes AX Motion Insights Electric for servo drives and electric axes, and AX Motion Insights Pneumatic for pneumatic cylinders. It also describes AX Data Access as a protocol translator to MQTT. Festo’s 2024/25 highlights list those applications alongside AX Energy Insights and characterize the offerings as standardized apps, with retrofit possible when technical prerequisites are met.

Those capabilities make AX relevant to factories seeking condition monitoring, energy information or a route to expose equipment data to other systems. They do not establish a guaranteed reduction in downtime: the cited announcements provide no independently verified savings rate or controlled comparison. Before deployment, a buyer should confirm sensor and controller compatibility, data access, installation requirements and what the specific monitoring application will flag.

What does SMC’s evidence say about its robotics position?

SMC’s 2025 integrated report documents a substantial role in pneumatic automation and in spreading automation-control knowledge. It describes sponsorship of student robotics competitions, including ABU Robocon, and an appearance with Japanese robotics-industry companies at Future Creation Robot Week during Expo 2025 Osaka. The report mentions a wireless auto-switch demonstration there.

Those activities show an investment in robotics education and technology dissemination; they are not evidence of an AI bin-picking product. Equally, the absence of such a product in the cited report does not prove that SMC offers no AI products or related solutions elsewhere. Buyers should ask SMC directly about any current offerings relevant to their application.

Which supplier fits a factory’s needs?

Consider GripperAI when product variation is the bottleneck

GripperAI is worth evaluating when a picking cell must handle varied or unfamiliar items and repeated template creation or manual tool selection is a problem. Check whether the actual robot, camera, path controller and grippers are supported, and test representative products—including the awkward, reflective, flexible or poorly presented items that cause difficulty on the production line.

Consider AX when equipment visibility is the priority

AX is relevant when the main goal is monitoring electric or pneumatic motion, surfacing potential anomalies, examining energy use or making machine data available through MQTT. For a retrofit, establish which hardware and technical prerequisites apply and whether third-party equipment is supported for the specific application.

Keep the installed system and support model in the decision

A software capability alone does not determine the best supplier. Existing components, integration effort, local service and training, spare-parts availability and the cost of changing a validated process can matter as much as a feature list. Festo reports around 20,600 employees, more than 250 branch offices and €3.33 billion in 2025 turnover; it also says it reinvests more than 8% of turnover in R&D and invests 1.5% in basic and further training. These are company-reported scale and investment figures, not a measure of local support quality or application performance. Compare the support available at the plant’s location rather than assuming global reach guarantees a particular response time.

What should buyers require in a head-to-head trial?

Ask vendors or integrators to test the same representative work, with the same acceptance criteria, and report the conditions as well as the results. Useful measures include:

  • First-pick success: successful picks without retries, across the actual product mix and presentation conditions.
  • Cycle time and throughput: measured over a sustained run, including the time spent selecting or changing tools.
  • Changeover effort: operator and engineering time required to introduce new products or adjust the cell.
  • Recovery behavior: how missed picks, occlusions, empty locations and tool faults are detected and handled.
  • Monitoring value: which anomalies are detected, how alerts are delivered, and whether they lead to actionable maintenance rather than nuisance alarms.
  • Total cost: integration, hardware, software, training, maintenance and support over the expected service life.

Request results on the same products and equipment, with test duration and exclusions stated. No independently verified Festo-versus-SMC win rate, uptime comparison, market-share figure or audited cost comparison is established in the company sources described here.
