Fedora Linux 44 is the current stable release announced on April 28, 2026. Fedora 45 was announced as a beta on September 15, 2026, so it is pre-release software rather than the stable version. Fedora publishes two releases each year, and each installation must be upgraded on schedule because support ends roughly one month after the second subsequent release.

Which Fedora release is stable now?

Fedora uses a schedule-based process with two major releases per year, generally targeted for late April and late October. Fedora Linux 44 was announced as released on April 28, 2026. Fedora Linux 45 Beta was announced on September 15, 2026; a beta build is for testing and evaluation, not for describing Fedora 45 as a finished stable desktop.

That distinction matters when you download an image, troubleshoot a driver or ask whether a package is available. A beta can have changing dependencies, incomplete hardware enablement and documentation that still assumes the final release. For a work computer, use the latest stable release unless you specifically need to test the next version and have a recovery plan.

Fedora’s release rhythm

Item What Fedora’s schedule means
Major releases Two each year, usually around late April and late October.
Fedora Linux 44 Stable; announced April 28, 2026.
Fedora Linux 45 Beta announced September 15, 2026; not the stable release in that announcement.

How long is a Fedora installation supported?

Fedora does not keep one release supported indefinitely. Its practical support window is tied to later releases: end of life arrives about one month after the N+2 release has shipped. In other words, a release normally remains supported through the next two releases and then has a short final margin.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The result is a moving deadline rather than a fixed number of years. If you install Fedora 44, watch the arrival of Fedora 45 and then Fedora 46; plan your upgrade before the month following Fedora 46. The exact calendar date depends on when those releases ship, so check Fedora’s current release and end-of-life notices rather than relying on an old date printed in a guide.

How often should you upgrade?

  • Apply normal package updates continuously or at least regularly.
  • Plan a release upgrade at least once a year, preferably before your installed release reaches its end of life.
  • Do not intentionally skip several releases. Fedora documentation says upgrades across more than two releases are not supported.
  • Keep a tested backup of personal files and any configuration that is difficult to recreate before a release upgrade.

Staying within the supported range gives the upgrade tools repositories that are intended to work together. Waiting until a release is obsolete can leave you with unsupported package metadata, security exposure and a much harder recovery path.

How do I install routine updates on a Fedora desktop?

Choose the graphical tool that matches your desktop environment, or use DNF in a terminal. Graphical updates are convenient for a personal workstation; the command line provides clearer output when an update fails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GNOME

  1. Open GNOME Software.
  2. Open its updates view and let it check for available packages.
  3. Start the update. When a system update is ready, Fedora presents a blue Restart & Update action.
  4. Select that action and allow the computer to reboot. Fedora applies the system update during the restart.

KDE Plasma

  1. Open Discover.
  2. Use its application and system-update controls to check for updates.
  3. Install the selected updates and restart when Discover requests it, especially for kernel or other core system changes.

Traditional RPM-based installations

Fedora’s traditional desktop installations use DNF to manage RPM packages. To refresh repository metadata and apply all available updates, run:

sudo dnf upgrade --refresh

The --refresh option asks DNF to obtain fresh repository metadata instead of trusting an older local cache. Read the transaction summary before confirming, particularly when a third-party repository is enabled.

Image-based Fedora desktops

Image-based desktops use rpm-ostree rather than the traditional package transaction model. Updates are composed as a new system image and normally become active after a reboot. Do not treat an rpm-ostree system like a conventional DNF installation or attempt to replace its update mechanism with arbitrary RPM commands; use the update controls documented for that image-based edition.

How do I upgrade to a new Fedora release?

A release upgrade is different from a daily package update. Fedora’s documented DNF procedure downloads packages for a target release and then performs the change during an offline reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Bring the existing installation fully up to date and refresh metadata:
    sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
  2. Reboot if the update process or desktop requests it. This leaves you starting the release upgrade from a current system.
  3. Download the target release, replacing <target> with the release number you intend to install:
    sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=<target>
  4. Review DNF’s proposed transaction. Pay special attention to packages it plans to remove, replace or downgrade.
  5. When the download and dependency checks complete successfully, schedule the offline reboot:
    sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot
  6. Leave the computer connected to power and do not interrupt the offline transaction. The machine reboots into the upgraded release when it finishes.

Fedora’s newer DNF5 tooling can expose a corresponding offline-reboot workflow. Follow the command sequence documented for the Fedora version you are running rather than mixing DNF4 and DNF5 instructions from different releases.

Third-party repository conflicts

Repositories added outside Fedora can lag behind a new release. A package built for the old release may force a dependency conflict or make DNF propose removals that you did not expect. Before accepting the transaction:

  • Read every removal and replacement in DNF’s summary.
  • Identify which repository owns a conflicting package.
  • Check whether that repository publishes packages for the target Fedora release.
  • Temporarily disable, remove or update an incompatible repository only when you understand what software depends on it.
  • Stop and resolve a dependency failure instead of forcing an incomplete upgrade.

If the upgrade cannot resolve dependencies, restore the repository configuration and package state, consult the repository maintainer’s release notes, and retry only after compatible packages are available. An unsupported jump over more than two Fedora releases is not a safe shortcut.

Why are some codecs missing from Fedora?

Fedora’s official repositories prioritize software that meets Fedora’s licensing and redistribution criteria. Some multimedia codecs and related components are absent because of patent, licensing or distribution restrictions rather than because the desktop cannot technically use them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fedora’s migration guidance identifies RPM Fusion’s free and non-free repositories as sources for multimedia support, gaming components and certain drivers. Enabling an additional repository can make more media play locally, but it creates another software supply chain that you must evaluate.

Before enabling a codec repository

  • Confirm that the repository publishes packages for your exact Fedora release and architecture.
  • Read its licensing and package-maintenance information.
  • Decide whether the repository’s trust model is acceptable for a computer that handles sensitive data.
  • Expect release timing to differ from Fedora’s; a new Fedora version may arrive before every multimedia package is rebuilt.
  • Keep a record of the repository so you can disable or update it during a future release upgrade.

There is no single permanent codec package list that applies unchanged to Fedora 44, Fedora 45 and later releases. Use current Fedora and RPM Fusion documentation for package names and legal guidance instead of copying a command written for an older version.

How are proprietary graphics drivers handled?

Proprietary drivers may not be present in Fedora’s official repositories for licensing or distribution reasons. The same repository and maintenance considerations that apply to codecs apply to graphics drivers: compatibility can depend on the Fedora release, the GPU generation and the repository’s build status.

NVIDIA and Secure Boot

Fedora Linux 41’s release announcement documented renewed support for installing proprietary NVIDIA drivers on Secure Boot systems. In that workflow, GNOME Software creates a Machine Owner Key (MOK); you must manually enroll or enable the key during the firmware or boot-time prompt for the driver to load.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

That Fedora 41 procedure should not be treated as timeless. Driver installation steps can change with each Fedora release, with the GPU generation and with the repository supplying the driver. If Secure Boot is enabled, read the instructions for your exact release, understand the MOK enrollment screen before rebooting, and keep an alternative kernel or recovery method available.

When a driver update breaks graphics

  • Record the Fedora release, GPU model and driver source before changing anything.
  • Check whether the repository has published a build for the new kernel or Fedora release.
  • Use the desktop’s previous boot entry or recovery documentation if the graphical session fails after an update.
  • Avoid installing multiple competing driver sources; mixed packages are difficult to diagnose and remove.

Can I install my application on Fedora?

Usually, start by checking Fedora’s own package catalog. If the application is not there, look for a Fedora Flatpak, then a reputable upstream Linux package or repository. Proprietary applications may have no Fedora-native package, and a Windows-only application may require a separate compatibility solution that is outside Fedora’s package repositories.

Source When to use it Important qualification
Fedora RPM packages System-integrated software and libraries maintained for the Fedora release. Package selection follows Fedora’s licensing, maintenance and integration policies.
Fedora Flatpaks Desktop applications distributed with bundled runtime dependencies and sandboxing. Availability depends on the application and enabled Flatpak repository; updates are managed separately from RPM updates.
Flathub or another additional Flatpak source Applications not present in Fedora’s Flatpak catalog. Review the publisher, permissions, update history and repository trust before installing.
Upstream or optional RPM repositories Specialized tools, proprietary software or packages unavailable in Fedora’s repositories. Release compatibility and long-term maintenance are the publisher’s responsibility, not Fedora’s.
EPEL Additional packages built for Enterprise Linux environments that may also be useful in related setups. It is an optional repository, not a guarantee that every desktop application has a Fedora-compatible build.

Finding Flatpaks

GNOME Software and KDE Discover can display and manage Flatpaks when the relevant repository is enabled. KDE Discover’s documentation describes adding Flathub when it is required. If an application page is missing, verify which repository is enabled, whether the publisher supports your architecture and whether the app is actually distributed for Linux.

Why an application or codec may be absent

  • The developer may not publish a Linux build.
  • Fedora may exclude a component because of licensing or redistribution restrictions.
  • The package may exist only as a Flatpak or in an optional repository.
  • The repository may not yet have rebuilt it for your Fedora release.
  • Your desktop’s software center may not have the repository enabled or refreshed.

What hardware is known to work with Fedora?

Fedora maintains a Fedora Ready compatibility list. One listing identifies NovaCustom as a Fedora Ready vendor and shows V54 and V56 systems sold with Fedora preinstalled worldwide. That page was last reviewed May 22, 2025.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A Fedora Ready listing is useful evidence that a vendor has shipped specified systems with Fedora, but it is not a blanket promise for every configuration, dock, Wi-Fi card, printer or external display. Components can change within a model family, and vendor inventory and support terms change over time.

Common Fedora desktop problems and practical fixes

The update button is missing

Refresh the software center, verify that networking and repository settings are working, and run sudo dnf upgrade --refresh on a traditional RPM installation. On an image-based desktop, use its rpm-ostree update control. A missing button can simply mean that metadata has not refreshed yet.

DNF wants to remove important packages

Cancel the transaction and inspect which repository supplied the packages marked for removal. Third-party repositories that have not rebuilt for the target release are a common cause. Do not approve a release upgrade until the proposed removals are understood.

A video file still will not play

Identify the format and check whether the required codec is covered by Fedora’s repositories or requires an additional source. Verify that any RPM Fusion packages match your Fedora release; avoid copying an old package list without checking current documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The NVIDIA driver does not load with Secure Boot

Check whether the driver installed a Machine Owner Key and whether you completed the manual enrollment prompt. If the procedure differs from the Fedora 41 example, follow the instructions for your current release and GPU rather than forcing an older workflow.

An application is not in GNOME Software or Discover

Search Fedora’s RPM catalog, then check the Flatpak repositories enabled in the software center. If neither contains it, look for a Linux package from the application’s own publisher and evaluate its update policy and trust implications before installation.

A safe Fedora maintenance routine

  1. Install routine updates through GNOME Software, KDE Discover, DNF or the appropriate rpm-ostree control.
  2. Restart when the desktop requests it so kernel and system updates become active.
  3. Review enabled third-party repositories before every major release upgrade.
  4. Upgrade within Fedora’s supported range, never skipping more than two releases.
  5. Keep backups and installation media available before changing releases, codecs or graphics drivers.
  6. When software is unavailable, check Fedora packages first, then Flatpaks and finally carefully selected external sources.
