In March 2022, CISA added actively exploited Chrome vulnerability CVE-2022-1096 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog, and Google released Chrome 99.0.4844.84 to address it. The headline refers to that historical incident—not a newly discovered Chrome zero-day in 2026.

What was Chrome zero-day CVE-2022-1096?

Google described CVE-2022-1096 as a high-severity type-confusion flaw in V8, Chrome’s JavaScript engine. In its March 25, 2022 stable-channel release note, Google said, “Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-1096 exists in the wild.” Google’s Chrome release note announced version 99.0.4844.84 for Windows, Mac, and Linux, with the update rolling out over the following days and weeks.

What Chrome version fixed CVE-2022-1096?

For the platforms named in Google’s March 25, 2022 announcement, Chrome 99.0.4844.84 was the release carrying the fix. That is a historical fixed version, not a recommendation for what to install today. The cited announcement does not establish current Chrome versions or whether a particular device is now protected; check the browser’s installed version and current vendor update guidance.

Did CVE-2022-1096 affect Microsoft Edge?

The contemporary report said the issue affected Chromium-based browsers and noted that Microsoft updated its Chromium-based Edge the day after Google’s emergency fix. However, the report does not give Edge’s fixed build or a complete list of affected browsers and their corrected versions. For a Chromium-based browser other than Chrome, use that browser vendor’s own release notes to identify the applicable fixed build rather than assuming Chrome’s version number applies.

Why were federal agencies told to patch it?

CISA added CVE-2022-1096 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, which identifies vulnerabilities known to be exploited in the wild and is intended to inform vulnerability-management priorities. SecurityWeek reported that the entry appeared alongside 31 other vulnerabilities. CISA describes the catalog as a prioritization resource, and encourages organizations to use it to help guide remediation—not only federal agencies. CISA’s KEV Catalog provides the catalog and its scope.

What was the federal patch deadline?

SecurityWeek reported April 18, 2022 as the deadline for agencies to address the batch of vulnerabilities added to the catalog, which included CVE-2022-1096. That date was reported for the wider batch; the article did not identify it as a separate deadline uniquely assigned to this Chrome flaw. The date has passed and describes the 2022 federal response, not a current patching deadline. SecurityWeek’s March 30, 2022 report covered the agency instruction and deadline context.
