Verdict: the proposed RF-box replacement has a sensible architecture, but the available evidence supports a promising prototype—not a verified drop-in or production-ready board. Before ordering PCBs, resolve the five-pin/seven-pin compatibility question, correct the contradictory TRS pinout, verify the LM2596 implementation and layout, and measure video, audio, ripple, temperature, and fault behavior on a real console.
The design request is documented in the All About Circuits review thread. It describes a board intended to replace the rear power/RF assembly, regulate the console supply, and provide composite video and mono audio.
What the replacement board must do
A Famicom rear board is more than an RF connector. Depending on the console revision, the replacement must accept the external DC input, route the power switch, provide the console’s regulated rail, carry signals over the ribbon cable, and replace RF with baseband AV.
External DC → protection → 5-V regulator → console rail

├─ video buffer → coupling → 75 Ω → composite
└─ audio mixer → coupling → mono output
Mechanical details matter as much as the schematic: mounting holes, board thickness, connector height, ribbon orientation, shell clearance, and the original switch wiring all need to match.

Compatibility comes before circuit evaluation
Do not label this board simply “Famicom-compatible.” Early consoles commonly use a larger shielded five-pin power/RF board, while later machines use a seven-pin arrangement. The switch may interrupt raw input on one revision and the regulated rail on another. Documentation for an existing replacement distinguishes these configurations and reports that an HVC-CPU-GPM-02 installation can require additional wires (PCBWay project documentation).
Identify the console first
- Record the motherboard revision and the original RF-board pin count.
- Photograph ribbon-cable orientation before desoldering.
- Use a continuity meter to identify ground, raw input, switched power, 5 V, video, audio, and switch contacts.
- Check whether the proposed board needs jumpers or motherboard wires.
- Confirm that the board’s connector and case opening physically match.
A design that works on a seven-pin assembly is not automatically safe on a five-pin console, even if the connector appears similar.
Regulator section: plausible topology, unproven implementation
The proposal uses a 9–10 V DC input, bridge rectifier, PTC fuse, clamp/protection diode, LM2596-5.0 buck stage, bulk capacitors, and a ferrite bead feeding local AV decoupling. That is a reasonable block diagram, but component values alone do not establish stability or safety.

Checks required before fabrication
- Verify the adapter polarity and voltage range. A bridge can tolerate polarity reversal, but it adds voltage drop and heat.
- Size the PTC for normal console current, startup surge, and the intended fault condition.
- Confirm the clamp diode polarity and voltage/current ratings.
- Determine whether the chosen LM2596 is genuinely a fixed 5-V part or an adjustable implementation being treated as fixed.
- Use the regulator manufacturer’s recommended inductor, Schottky diode, input capacitor, output capacitor, and ESR range.
- Keep the high-current switching loops short and away from video and audio traces.
- Measure 5 V at startup, idle, cartridge load, and worst-case gameplay—not just with the console disconnected.
The proposal names an SS34 diode, inductor, and bulk capacitors, plus 0.1-µF, 10-µF, and 47-µF capacitors after the bead (design discussion). These are starting values to verify against the exact regulator datasheet and PCB placement.

A 7805 is simpler but turns the voltage difference into heat. One limited test measured an original regulator at about 129 °F after 30 minutes and a replacement board at about 123 °F under that particular setup; the figures depend on adapter, load, enclosure, and ambient conditions (RetroRGB review). A buck regulator can reduce dissipation, but adds ripple, electromagnetic interference, layout sensitivity, and possible video or audio whine. Measure ripple at both the regulator output and the AV rail.
Ferrite-bead isolation is only a starting point
The proposed bead followed by 0.1-µF, 10-µF, and 47-µF capacitors is sensible as local filtering. Select the bead for its impedance at the switcher’s fundamental and harmonics, adequate current rating, and low DC resistance. Place the capacitors beside the AV load.

Filtering cannot repair a bad return path. Keep switching-current returns out of video and audio returns, avoid routing AV traces beside the inductor or diode, and decide deliberately how the jack shield and output ground connect. A later NESRGB power/audio design uses electrically isolated output grounds as a noise-control precedent, although it does not prove that identical treatment is mandatory here (NESRGB Famicom documentation).
Video buffer: measure the waveform, not just the schematic
The proposed path is a 2N3904-type NPN emitter follower, 1-kΩ collector resistor, 100-kΩ base-to-ground resistor, 220-µF coupling capacitor, and 75-Ω series resistor. An optional 220-pF shunt capacitor is presented as compensation or noise filtering.

A first-order estimate gives the 220-µF coupling capacitor a corner near 9.6 Hz with a 75-Ω load. The 220-pF option gives a corner near 9.6 MHz with 75 Ω. Those estimates ignore source impedance, ESR, and the actual input arrangement, so populate the small capacitor only if measurements show that it improves ringing without softening useful detail. A 75-Ω resistor alone does not prove a correct 1-Vpp composite output.
Audio mixer: unequal by design
The passive mixer uses 47 kΩ from internal/APU audio and 100 kΩ from expansion audio, followed by a 1-µF coupling capacitor and optional 100-Ω series resistor. With equal source impedances and a high-impedance destination, the 47-kΩ branch contributes more strongly. That may be intentional, but it is not an inherently balanced mix.
Measure each source separately, both together, and with games using strong expansion channels. Check clipping, attenuation, hum, switcher whine, and the effect of real cable and destination input impedances. The 1-µF capacitor’s low-frequency response depends on the receiving device, so compatibility with every television, scaler, capture card, or adapter cannot be assumed.

Resolve the TRS connector contradiction before building
The two available descriptions disagree: one assigns tip to video and ring to audio; the other assigns tip to audio and ring to video (source thread). Treat this as a manufacturing blocker.
- Publish the exact jack part number and a labeled tip/ring/sleeve diagram.
- Specify the intended TRS-to-RCA wiring rather than relying on plug colors.
- Check continuity from every board pad to the plug contacts.
- Inject or observe known video and audio signals with an oscilloscope.
- Label assembled boards and cables.
Existing replacement-board documentation describes a real adapter mismatch in which video appeared on the red RCA plug and mono audio on white, demonstrating why color conventions are unsafe (PCBWay documentation).
Jailbars are a separate problem
Replacing the RF box can improve connector convenience and remove the RF conversion stage, but it does not guarantee clean composite video. Motherboard power and PPU-video layout can still produce jailbars or other artifacts. The PCBWay documentation specifically warns that jailbars may become more pronounced after its composite upgrade (project notes).
Evaluate stock RF, a direct composite tap, this replacement without motherboard changes, the replacement with jailbar mitigation, and an RGB installation as separate cases. PPU pin work and capacitor changes belong to a motherboard modification plan, not an assumption about the RF-box PCB.

Power and thermal
- Verify input polarity and startup current.
- Measure 5 V at idle and during cartridge gameplay.
- Measure ripple before and after the ferrite bead.
- Run the console for at least 30 minutes and record regulator, diode, and board temperatures.
- Test the intended adapter and a deliberately poor-quality compatible adapter.
- Only claim reverse-polarity, overcurrent, or short-circuit protection after fault testing.
Video
- Measure the emitter and post-coupling waveform into 75 Ω.
- Check sync, amplitude, black and white levels, ringing, clipping, and color stability.
- Use a title screen, scrolling scene, bright white field, and high-contrast pattern.
- Test a CRT, modern television, scaler, and capture device.
Audio and mechanics
- Measure internal and expansion levels independently and together.
- Check clipping, hum, crosstalk, and mono balance.
- Confirm mounting holes, ribbon reach, connector height, shell clearance, and power-plug access.
- Repeat electrical tests on every claimed motherboard and RF-board revision.

Final recommendation
Classify the proposed PCB as electrically plausible, not bench-validated or production-ready. Correct the TRS assignment, publish revision-specific pinouts, verify the switcher against its datasheet and layout rules, and complete the power, 75-Ω video, audio, thermal, and mechanical tests before manufacturing beyond a prototype. Readers who want predictable installation today should choose a documented replacement matched to their console revision; readers seeking RGB should pursue an RGB solution rather than treating a composite RF-box board as an upgrade to that class of output.
