Check the requirements for the specific Fallout game you want to play: the published PC specs differ, and meeting them does not guarantee a particular frame rate. Bethesda lists 8 GB of RAM and 30 GB of free storage for Fallout 4, versus 8 GB of RAM and 96 GB for Fallout 76. For older games, treat their posted specifications as historical guidance and verify current Windows and storefront compatibility before buying or upgrading.
Compare the published PC requirements
Compare your PC’s processor, graphics card and video memory, system RAM, free storage, and operating-system compatibility against the listing for the exact game. Minimum and recommended specifications are not FPS guarantees: Bethesda’s published pages do not state a target frame rate or resolution for these games.

The table reproduces the published Windows requirements. Bethesda’s Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 support pages are not visibly versioned and list older Windows editions; those entries should not be read as confirmation of compatibility with every current Windows version or storefront. Check the active store listing and Windows support details for the edition you plan to install.

What the specs do—and do not—tell you
Focus on the limiting component
A PC can match the listed RAM and still fall short on its graphics card, processor, or free disk space. For graphics cards, compare the exact model and video-memory amount where listed; a similar-sounding name alone is not enough to establish equivalence. Keep storage capacity separate from performance: Fallout 76’s listed 96 GB is an installation-space requirement, not an indication of expected speed.

Be cautious with older games
Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas have much older posted specifications. Those low historical requirements do not by themselves prove that installation and play will work smoothly on a current system. The Fallout 3 Steam listing also contains legacy Windows support and Games for Windows–Live wording; it should not be treated as a verified description of present-day online services. The Fallout 3 manual’s note that it was developed and tested on GeForce 8, 9, and GTX 200 cards describes its 2008-era intended experience, not a current GPU recommendation. Fallout 3 PC manual.
Official individual PC requirements for Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics are not established here, so do not infer their requirements from another entry in the series.

Improve Fallout 4 performance
Bethesda’s troubleshooting sequence starts with reversible settings and driver checks rather than an automatic hardware purchase. Try one change at a time and check whether it helps before making another change.
- Restore the detected settings: open the Fallout 4 launcher, select Options, then Default. This restores video options automatically detected for the system.
- Reduce graphics load: lower or disable graphics settings in the game, including resolution. Bethesda notes that lowering or disabling settings “may” improve performance; it does not promise a fix for every system.
- Close other programs: quit unnecessary background software and see whether performance changes.
- Update the graphics driver: use the instructions from the graphics-card manufacturer.
- Check the listed requirements: compare the PC’s components with Bethesda’s published specs above if the problem continues.
- Reset configuration files only if needed: Bethesda suggests deleting
Fallout4.ini,Fallout4Custom.ini, andFallout4Prefs.inito reset settings. Back up files first if you want to preserve custom configuration. - Try another display mode: in the launcher, switch to borderless/windowed mode if the issue remains.

Improve Fallout 76 performance
Bethesda notes that low FPS or lag may involve memory, the graphics card, or overall computer performance. Check the requirements and graphics drivers first, then adjust display settings.
- Open display settings: from the game’s Main Menu, go to Settings → Display.
- Test Fullscreen: select Fullscreen mode and check whether it changes the issue.
- Lower fade distances: reduce Actor, Item, Object, and Grass Fade settings. Bethesda identifies these as likely to deliver the best performance improvement with the least visual impact.
- Reduce other demanding options if needed: lower Texture, Water, Lighting, and Shadow quality, checking performance after each adjustment.
Fallout 76 offers Low, Medium, High, Ultra, and Custom presets. Changing an individual setting changes the preset label to Custom; that label reflects the mixed settings, not a separate performance mode. See Bethesda’s Fallout 76 low-FPS troubleshooting article.

Decide whether the issue is hardware or configuration
If the game still runs poorly, use the comparison and troubleshooting steps to identify the likely category before spending money. A mismatch with a listed CPU, GPU, RAM, or storage requirement is a hardware shortfall to investigate. If the PC meets the published specs, test settings, drivers, background programs, and configuration first; the listings do not establish a specific FPS promise that every qualifying PC must achieve.
