Choose Xbox Series X|S if large or numerous Fallout 4 Creations are your priority. Bethesda’s May 27, 2026 storage update raises the Xbox Creations limit to 100 GB, compared with approximately 15 GB on PS5. Choose either console for the documented 60 FPS Performance mode: both have native current-generation applications, with Quality mode targeting 30 FPS or 40 FPS on a 120 Hz display.
Load times are much better than on last-generation consoles, but no controlled, current benchmark establishes a reliable PS5-versus-Series-X winner. The practical decision is therefore straightforward: Xbox for mod capacity and load-order headroom; either platform for the same published frame-rate targets.

The table captures the decision that matters most. Xbox Series X|S has the decisive capacity advantage, while the two platforms share Bethesda’s documented graphics-mode targets. The Series X and Series S are grouped together in Bethesda’s mode definitions; this does not mean every scene renders at an identical internal resolution, because Performance mode uses dynamic scaling.
What the current-generation versions actually change
Bethesda released native PS5 and Xbox Series applications on April 25, 2024. The update brought increased resolutions and support for frame rates of up to 60 FPS. Native applications reduce the ambiguity around console settings: you are selecting the current-generation Fallout 4 build and its Performance or Quality mode, not relying solely on an older application running through compatibility layers.

Native status does not make the game immune to stutter. Digital Foundry’s May 14, 2024 re-review tested PS5, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, including their graphics modes, and reported that intrusive hitching remained after the patch. That finding is useful for setting expectations about frame pacing, but it does not support a claim that one console always performs better. Hitching can appear in demanding areas, during traversal, or when a heavily modified installation is processing additional content.
Creations and mod support
Xbox Series X|S: 100 GB of Creations storage
Bethesda’s 2026 figures give Xbox Series X|S a maximum expandable Creations storage allocation of 100 GB. That is the clearest advantage for players who want large texture packs, several settlement or quest additions, or a long load order containing many smaller changes. The limit is storage reserved for console Creations; it is not a promise that every individual mod is available on Xbox or that every combination will be stable.
A larger allowance also gives you room to experiment without deleting content immediately. You can keep alternative visual packages, gameplay overhauls, and utility items installed while testing a load order. You still need to check each Creation’s requirements, compatibility notes, and placement instructions. Storage capacity removes one constraint; it does not remove conflicts between mods that edit the same records.

PS5 Creations storage is approximately 15 GB according to Bethesda’s 2026 figures. That is enough for a curated setup, but it requires stricter prioritization when individual files are large. A player who wants only a few gameplay fixes and interface improvements may never hit the ceiling. A player building a visual overhaul or a content-heavy load order will reach it much sooner than on Xbox.

The smaller budget also changes maintenance. Keep a written list of the Creations you consider essential, remove abandoned experiments before installing replacements, and leave some headroom for updates. The exact space consumed by a load order depends on the files you choose, so the 15 GB figure should be treated as a platform limit rather than a recommendation for a particular mix.
The May 27, 2026 Xbox reset matters
Bethesda says the 2026 storage update clears installed Xbox Creations the first time Fallout 4 launches after the update. You must re-download the content or restore a saved load order. PS5 installations are preserved. Bethesda’s load-order notice specifically advised players to save their console load order before the May 27, 2026 update. Players with saves older than November 10, 2025 are expected to be affected by the reset process.
That behavior is temporary maintenance, not a reduction of Xbox capacity. It is nevertheless a real interruption: a large load order can take time to reconstruct, and a missing dependency can leave a save unable to load correctly. Treat the update as a migration task rather than launching immediately and hoping the list reappears.
Performance modes and frame-rate targets

Performance mode is the sensible default for most players. A stable-feeling camera and faster input response matter in firefights, while dynamic resolution allows the game to reduce internal resolution when necessary. The 4K wording describes the target output mode, not a guarantee that every frame is rendered internally at a fixed 3840×2160 resolution.

Quality mode is for players who prefer ultra settings and can accept 30 FPS. If your television or monitor supports 120 Hz and the console is configured to use it, Bethesda documents a 40 FPS Quality target. A 60 Hz panel cannot display that 40 FPS target correctly, so check the display’s refresh-rate support before choosing the mode for that reason.
Neither setting should be described as a universal lock. Digital Foundry’s review found intrusive hitching still present after the next-generation patch. In practice, an uncrowded, lightly modified installation may feel smoother than a save with many scripts, large world edits, or frequent asset streaming. That is a workload difference, not proof that PS5 or Xbox wins every scene.
Load times: what can and cannot be concluded
Both consoles use SSD storage and run native current-generation Fallout 4 applications, so loading is materially improved compared with last-generation hardware. The available evidence does not include a controlled, current, game-specific table measuring identical saves, identical Creations, and identical settings on PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. There is therefore no defensible numeric winner.

- The console model and its storage condition.
- Whether the game is loading a new area, a save, or a transition after fast travel.
- The number and type of installed Creations.
- Script initialization and asset streaming in a heavily modified save.
- Whether the test starts from a cold launch, a suspended session, or a recently used game.
If you want to compare your own consoles, use the same save, the same load order, the same display mode, and the same start condition. Record several runs rather than one stopwatch result, and label the result as your setup’s observation. Do not present it as a platform-wide benchmark.
Which console should you buy for Fallout 4?
Choose Xbox Series X|S when mods are the main reason you are returning
- You expect to approach or exceed 15 GB of Creations.
- You want several large texture, settlement, quest, or gameplay additions installed at once.
- You prefer to maintain multiple load-order variants without deleting content every time you test one.
- You accept the need to rebuild the Xbox installation after the May 27, 2026 storage update.
The 100 GB ceiling is not merely a larger number on a specification sheet. It changes which load orders are practical on console. It also makes Xbox the safer choice for players who do not want to redesign a mod list around a tight storage budget.
Choose PS5 when you want a curated, lower-maintenance setup
- Your mod list is comfortably below approximately 15 GB.
- You value preserving installed Creations through the 2026 update.
- You plan to play mostly unmodded or with a small set of carefully selected additions.
- Your existing library, controller preference, or friends list already centers on PlayStation.
PS5 is not a lower-frame-rate version. It has the same documented Performance and Quality targets and the same native-application date. Its trade-off is capacity, not a published disadvantage in the graphics modes.

A 120 Hz television or monitor makes the 40 FPS Quality target relevant on either platform. A 60 Hz display leaves you choosing primarily between the 60 FPS Performance target and the 30 FPS Quality target. Display capability can refine the decision, but it does not erase Xbox’s 100 GB versus PS5’s approximately 15 GB Creations difference.

Pre-update and first-launch checklist
- Before May 27, 2026: open your Fallout 4 Creations setup and save the console load order using the available in-game save or export control. Also take screenshots or write down the order as a second record.
- Record dependencies: note which saved games rely on particular Creations, especially large framework or settlement additions. A load order restored without a required dependency can produce warnings or prevent a save from loading properly.
- Allow time for re-downloads: Xbox players should expect installed Creations to be cleared on the first launch after the storage update. Make sure the console has enough free disk space and a stable connection before beginning restoration.
- Launch once and inspect the list: do not immediately load your most important save. Confirm that the restored list contains the intended files and that its order matches your saved record.
- Test a disposable save: load a less important save or create a test save, travel to a few locations, and watch for missing-content warnings before returning to your main character.
- Rebuild in stages if necessary: if the full list produces errors, restore core dependencies first, test, and then add larger or more complex Creations in groups.
PS5 players should still keep a written load-order record. Preservation is the expected behavior, but a backup makes troubleshooting easier if a download, account, or save issue occurs.
Troubleshooting a save that hangs after adding mods
Bethesda advises clearing mods or reinstalling on affected consoles when Fallout 4 becomes stuck after activating many Creations. Use the least destructive option first:
- Wait briefly to distinguish a slow first initialization from a true hang, then close and relaunch the game.
- If the problem began immediately after adding or updating Creations, remove the newest additions or disable the most recently changed group.
- Restart the console and try loading a save made before the problematic additions.
- If the game remains stuck, clear the installed Creations as Bethesda advises, then restore a known-good load order in smaller groups.
- Use reinstalling only when clearing and rebuilding does not resolve the problem. Reinstalling the application does not replace the need to reconstruct a compatible load order.
Do not keep loading and overwriting your only save while troubleshooting. Maintain at least one unmodified or known-good save so that a bad combination of Creations does not become the only recovery point.

Load-order practices that matter more on Xbox
The Xbox storage increase makes experimentation easier, but it can also encourage an unnecessarily complicated list. Keep a change log containing the Creation name, version shown in the game, installation date, and the reason you added it. When a problem appears, you can reverse the last change instead of guessing among dozens of files.
- Add and test major changes one group at a time.
- Read each Creation’s requirements before installing it; a missing dependency can look like a broken save.
- Avoid keeping two additions that perform the same overhaul unless their authors explicitly document compatibility.
- Reserve free storage for updates and replacements instead of filling the entire allowance.
- Do not assume that a list that fits within 100 GB is automatically safe. Conflicts, script load, and asset interactions are separate from storage capacity.
On PS5, the same discipline prevents the approximately 15 GB limit from forcing emergency deletions. Start with the features you consider essential, then spend the remaining space on additions that do not overlap those systems.
Game of the Year Edition and add-ons
The Xbox listing for Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition describes an edition containing the base game and all six official add-ons. Before purchasing, verify the exact edition, platform, region, and current availability in the store you intend to use. The edition’s included add-ons are separate from the Creations storage allowance: owning official downloadable content does not turn the 100 GB or approximately 15 GB Creations limit into a larger one.
Common comparison mistakes
- Calling 60 FPS a guaranteed lock: Bethesda describes Performance mode as a 60 FPS target, and testing has documented remaining hitching.
- Assuming 4K means fixed native 4K rendering: Performance mode uses dynamic resolution scaling.
- Using one load-time video as a universal result: there is no standardized, current PS5-versus-Series-X benchmark in the available evidence.
- Ignoring the 2026 Xbox reset: installed Xbox Creations are cleared on first launch after the storage update, while PS5 installations are expected to remain.
- Equating storage with compatibility: more room permits a larger list but does not prevent conflicts or instability.
Final decision
For a mod-heavy Fallout 4 setup, Xbox Series X|S is the clear practical choice because its Creations budget can expand to 100 GB, versus approximately 15 GB on PS5. For an unmodded or lightly modded playthrough, either console offers the same published native-app frame-rate choices: 60 FPS Performance, 30 FPS Quality, or a 40 FPS Quality target with a 120 Hz display. Treat loading as broadly improved on both SSD consoles, not as a race with a proven winner, and save your Xbox load order before the May 27, 2026 update.
