A May 2006 EE Times article reported that an alleged counterfeit operation had appropriated NEC’s company identity and brand—not merely copied individual products. The account summarized a report in the International Herald Tribune; the allegations and figures below are attributed to that reporting, not independently verified findings.

What the 2006 report alleged

Peter Clarke’s EE Times article, published May 4, 2006, said the alleged company operated mainly in China and appeared to be controlled by entities in Japan and Taiwan. The article said the operation came to light after two years of investigation, but did not describe the investigation’s methods or identify the entities. Read the May 2006 EE Times account.

The central allegation was broader than the usual story of a copied device: the company was said to have assumed NEC’s name and branding across a business that made, commissioned, and licensed products. The article reported that it awarded manufacturing contracts and licensed Chinese companies to use its designs under the NEC brand, despite having no right to do so. These are reported claims, not a legal finding established by the available accounts.

Products attributed to the alleged operation

The 2006 article put the portfolio at about 50 counterfeit products. It named home entertainment systems, MP3 players, batteries, microphones, and DVD players. According to the article, some products copied NEC offerings while others were outside NEC’s legitimate product range. A 2007 EE Times retrospective repeated the approximate count and examples, but does not independently establish an audited inventory. 2006 report · 2007 retrospective.

What NEC’s representative said—and what was not disclosed

EE Times quoted Fujio Okada, identified as NEC’s senior vice president and general manager of its legal division, describing the alleged coordination: “These entities are part of a sophisticated ring, coordinated by two key entities based in Taiwan and Japan, which has attempted to completely assume the NEC brand,”

The article said NEC declined to identify the alleged offenders for legal reasons. It also said the company could not estimate the value of goods sold by the operation. The accounts cited here do not establish the entities’ names, sales total, a court outcome, or what happened to the operation after the report was published.

How to read the headline

“Fake NEC company found” is the 2006 report’s framing, not a present-day status update or proof of a court determination. The underlying story is an allegation reported by EE Times from an International Herald Tribune report. The available accounts support explaining what was alleged and what NEC’s executive was quoted saying; they do not settle the case or establish the operation’s later status.
