Khalifah is a free, browser-based game created by Saskatchewan computer-science student Afridi Matin for his five-year-old son, Roman. Instead of advertising-filled entertainment, it places children in a peaceful village where building, exploration and lessons introduce Arabic letters, cleansing before prayer and basic Islamic beliefs. The game launched on October 13, 2026, and Matin told CBC News on October 26 that it had attracted nearly 150 players.

What is Khalifah?

Khalifah is an open-world learning game aimed at Muslim children ages five to 12. Players help build a village, explore a desert on camels and meet non-player villagers. A village school provides lessons on Arabic letters, the practices of cleansing before prayer and foundational Islamic concepts.

Matin, a University of Regina computer-science student, said he built the game from scratch over nearly five months. He began after noticing advertising in games his son played. Khalifah is reported to contain no advertising and to work without an account.

How does the game teach prayer and Islamic practice?

The game turns prayer into an activity within the village rather than a detached quiz. When the call to prayer sounds, players can travel to the mosque and pray alongside village characters.

A mosque activity inside the game world

That shared setting gives children a recognizable routine: hear the call, go to the mosque and join the community. Matin said Roman particularly enjoys praying with neighboring characters. He also reported that, after playing, Roman became more willing to take part in pre-prayer cleansing and prayer when visiting a mosque.

Lessons delivered through a school

The school provides structured teaching on Arabic letters, cleansing before prayer and basic faith. The available descriptions do not establish a formal curriculum, reading level or assessment system, so families should treat the lessons as an introduction rather than a complete religious education.

Is Khalifah safe and easy for children to access?

Can a video game teach children about Islam?

Games can support learning when children make choices, receive feedback and return to ideas in a meaningful setting. University of Regina educational-technology professor Alec Couros told CBC that interactivity, engagement and rewards can motivate children differently from worksheets, while virtual worlds can encourage exploration rather than simple memorization.

That context explains why a village game may complement family and mosque instruction. It does not prove that Khalifah itself improves religious knowledge: the available reporting describes family observations, not a controlled educational study or formal evaluation. Parents should use it as one activity alongside conversations, books, teachers and community practice.

What did Roman’s experience show?

Roman’s response is the clearest personal example in the reporting. Matin said his son’s favorite feature is praying with neighboring characters and that the game made him more willing to participate in cleansing and prayer during mosque visits. Those observations concern one child and should not be generalized as a measured result for all players.

How was Khalifah developed, and what comes next?

Matin said development took nearly five months, from initial idea to the October 13 launch. By October 26, he reported nearly 150 players. He plans to update the game and add more languages so that more Muslim children can use it to learn about faith. Language expansion is a future plan, not a currently available feature.

What families should expect now

  • A browser-based village-building game for children roughly five to 12.
  • Introductory activities covering Arabic letters, cleansing before prayer and Islamic basics.
  • A mosque routine connected to the in-game call to prayer.
  • Ad-free, account-free access as described in current reporting.
  • No evidence yet of independent testing, learning-outcome data or a formal religious curriculum.
