Fairbuds 2 are IP54 dust- and splash-resistant, not waterproof for immersion. They are intended for sweat, light rain and ordinary splashes, but not showers or swimming. Fairphone designed the earbuds around seven replaceable spare parts, including both earbud batteries and the charging-case battery. Battery changes are tool-free and glue-free, and individual earbuds and a case core are available separately.
The Fairbuds app works on iOS and Android phones, providing sound presets, a five-band equalizer and firmware updates. Fairphone describes those updates as a way to extend longevity, add features and fix occasional bugs, but its published Fairbuds 2 material does not promise a fixed software-support end date.
What does the Fairbuds 2 IP54 rating mean?
Fairphone’s Fairbuds 2 product information labels the earbuds “IP54 dust and splash resistant.” The first digit, 5, indicates protection against dust ingress sufficient for normal use; the second digit, 4, covers water splashing against the enclosure from any direction. Fairphone’s support explanation for the Fairbuds line describes this in plain language as rainproof protection, not complete waterproofing.

The rating applies to the earbuds’ enclosure under the test conditions for that class. It does not make the charging case suitable for water, and it does not authorize deliberate immersion.

After exposure to moisture, wipe the earbuds and let them dry before putting them in the case. Keep the case and its charging contacts dry; moisture trapped around contacts can interfere with charging even when the earbuds themselves continue to play.

What to do if an earbud gets wet
- Remove it from your ear and stop charging or pairing it if moisture is visible.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth.
- Leave the earbud and case open in a dry place until all visible moisture has gone.
- Inspect and dry the charging contacts before returning the earbud to the case.
- If it behaves abnormally after drying, use Fairphone support rather than repeatedly charging a visibly wet unit.
Which Fairbuds 2 parts can be replaced?
Fairphone says Fairbuds 2 have seven replaceable spare parts. The replaceable design includes the battery in each earbud, the charging-case battery and additional case components. This is different from sealed true-wireless earbuds, where a worn battery often means replacing the entire set.
Fairphone states that users can replace the earbud battery and the charging-case battery without tools or glue. That makes a declining battery a repair decision rather than an automatic reason to discard otherwise working earbuds.

The euro amounts above are the prices published on Fairphone’s official Fairbuds 2 pages; availability, tax, shipping and currency conversion can vary by market and date. A single replacement earbud and a charging-case core are separate purchase paths, so you do not necessarily need a complete new set when only one component is missing or defective.
How to choose between a battery, earbud or case replacement
- Capacity has gradually fallen: start with the matching battery replacement rather than replacing the whole product.
- One side is lost or physically damaged: look for a single Fairbuds 2 replacement earbud.
- The case itself is the fault: check whether the charging-case core is the appropriate part.
- Several components are damaged: compare the combined part cost and shipping with a complete replacement before ordering.
How do you replace a Fairbuds 2 battery?
The important distinction is that Fairphone describes these swaps as tool-free and glue-free. You should still use the instructions supplied with the exact Fairbuds 2 part, because first-generation Fairbuds components are also sold and are not automatically interchangeable.

- Identify the failed component. Decide whether the short runtime is in one earbud or in the charging case. Test each side separately and confirm that the problem is not simply a dirty contact or an empty case.
- Order a model-specific part. Search for “Fairbuds 2 replacement battery kit” or “Fairbuds 2 charging case battery.” Include the model name in every marketplace search and verify that the listing explicitly says Fairbuds 2.
- Prepare a dry, clean work area. Keep the replacement and charging contacts away from moisture and loose debris. Do not begin a battery swap while the earbuds or case are wet.
- Follow the supplied replacement sequence. Fairphone’s design avoids tools and adhesive, but the kit instructions are the authority for the order in which the module is removed and installed.
- Check charging and pairing. After installation, charge the affected component, confirm that the case recognizes the earbud, and test left and right playback independently.
- Recycle the old battery properly. Use the battery-collection route required in your country rather than putting a lithium battery in household waste.
A battery replacement is most sensible when the electronics, drivers and charging contacts are otherwise healthy. If an earbud still will not charge after a correctly fitted battery, the fault may be elsewhere; a single-earbud replacement or Fairphone support is then more appropriate.
Can you buy one Fairbuds 2 earbud?
Yes. Fairphone says a single replacement earbud can be purchased. This is useful when one side has been lost, damaged or rendered unusable while the other side and case remain serviceable.
Before ordering, confirm that the listing identifies Fairbuds 2 rather than the earlier Fairbuds generation. Check the earbud side, regional availability and whether the seller explains the pairing process. A replacement side may need to be placed in the existing case and paired again; use Fairphone’s current instructions for that procedure instead of assuming that an older model’s steps apply.
When the case is the problem rather than the earbud, Fairphone also lists a charging-case core as a separate part at €29.95 on its official page. That gives owners a third repair route between replacing a small battery and buying a complete set.
Does the Fairbuds app work with iPhone and Android?
Fairbuds 2 use standard Bluetooth and work with both iOS and Android phones. You do not need a Fairphone handset. Basic Bluetooth audio can connect through the phone’s normal Bluetooth settings, while the companion Fairbuds app provides the product’s full feature set.

What the app is for
The app lets you choose the available sound presets, adjust the five-band equalizer and install firmware updates. Fairphone says updates are intended to support device longevity, add new features and provide occasional bug fixes.

How long will Fairbuds 2 receive software updates?
Fairphone’s published Fairbuds 2 information does not state a fixed end date or a guaranteed number of years for firmware or security updates. It is accurate to say that the app supports updates over time, not to promise support through a particular calendar year.
This distinction matters when comparing long-term ownership. A product can have replaceable batteries and an update mechanism without a publicly guaranteed support deadline. Prospective buyers who need a contractual software-support period should ask Fairphone for the current commitment in their country before purchase and retain the answer with their order records.
The absence of a stated end date is not evidence that updates will stop immediately; it means only that Fairphone’s available Fairbuds 2 documentation does not establish a cutoff. Firmware updates are delivered through the iOS or Android app rather than through a Fairphone-only phone ecosystem.

What warranty applies to Fairbuds 2?
Fairphone’s product page says buyers in Europe can receive a third warranty year by registering within 90 days. This is a regional, registration-dependent benefit, not a universal warranty rule. Check the terms for the country where you bought the earbuds, complete registration within the stated window if eligible, and keep proof of purchase.
Do not apply parts-availability targets published for the first-generation Fairbuds to Fairbuds 2. The models have separate documentation and spare-part compatibility requirements.
Common Fairbuds 2 problems and the right response
The earbuds got caught in rain
Remove them, wipe them and dry the case and contacts before charging. IP54 splash protection addresses ordinary rain exposure, but repeated or prolonged wetting should not be treated as harmless.
One earbud drains much faster than the other
First check that both charging contacts are clean and that the affected earbud seats fully in the case. If the runtime has declined over the product’s life, the model-specific earbud battery kit is the relevant repair path. If a new battery does not resolve the issue, seek support or consider a single replacement earbud.

The case will not charge the earbuds
Dry the case completely, inspect the contacts and confirm that the case itself has charge. A worn case battery can be replaced separately; a broader case fault may point to the charging-case core.

The app cannot find the earbuds
Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled, disconnect the earbuds from another nearby phone and reopen the Fairbuds app. Because the app is available on both iOS and Android, switching phone brands is not required. If the problem follows the earbuds across compatible phones, use Fairphone’s support process.
A firmware update appears stuck
Keep both earbuds in the case as instructed by the app, maintain a stable Bluetooth connection and ensure adequate charge. Retry only after the app reports that the previous attempt has ended; repeated interruptions can create a less clear diagnosis than one controlled retry.
