On Samsung phones, “hard reset” usually means the same data-erasing operation as a “factory reset”: it returns the device to factory settings and removes personal information and stored data. A restart is different—it powers the phone back on without erasing stored data.
Factory reset and hard reset mean the same thing on Samsung
Samsung describes a factory reset as “sometimes called a hard reset or a master reset.” The terms do not identify two different levels of reset or different data outcomes: both refer to returning the phone to factory settings and deleting personal information, changes, and data. There is a separate phrase that can cause confusion: a hard restart or forced reboot. Restarting closes active apps and clears working memory, but stored data remains. It is not the same as a hard/factory reset, which erases data.
What a factory reset can erase—and what to do first
A reset can delete personal data and customized settings, along with downloaded apps, messages, contacts, and photos. Back up anything important before proceeding. Samsung lists a Samsung account, Google account, and Smart Switch among the available backup options. The exact data included in a backup depends on the service and what you choose to save.

Choose the reset route that fits your situation

Reset through Settings
- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. This is Samsung’s published example path; labels may differ on your device.
- Review the information about what will be erased, then follow the prompts to confirm.
Samsung Australia provides the same example path in its Galaxy factory-reset instructions. Check the instructions for your model if the labels or menu order differ.
Reset using device buttons
Do not rely on one button combination for every Galaxy phone. The combination and recovery-menu steps vary by model, and a button press may force a restart rather than open recovery controls. Use Samsung’s instructions for your exact device; Samsung’s illustrated reset guide, for example, is specific to its stated device and software context.

After a reset performed outside Settings, FRP may ask you to verify the Google account that was previously registered on the phone. A reset is not a way to bypass account ownership checks. If you are preparing a phone for transfer, remove your Google account before resetting when possible.
Erase a phone remotely
Samsung’s US remote-erasure guidance says the phone must be on, connected to a stable network, associated with a Samsung account, and configured for remote controls. If those conditions are not met, a remote erase may not reach the device. See Samsung’s guidance for locating a lost Galaxy phone or tablet. If remote erasure fails, Samsung advises changing passwords for accounts that may be signed in on the device.

Which option should you use?
- Want to keep your data? Restart the phone; do not choose factory data reset.
- Want to erase the phone and can use its menus? Use the Settings route after backing up data you want to keep.
- Cannot reach Settings? Find the exact model’s official recovery instructions, and be prepared to verify the previously registered Google account afterward.
- Phone is lost? Try Samsung’s remote-erase feature only if it was configured and the device meets the account and network requirements.
