To go live on Facebook from your phone, open the Facebook app, tap What’s on your mind?, choose Live video, prepare your audience and description, then tap Go live. For a broadcast with screen sharing, graphics, or multiple camera angles, use a desktop production setup with streaming software or external hardware. To grow an audience, promote a consistent schedule, invite relevant people to follow, and make the live chat welcoming and manageable.
Choose the setup that fits your broadcast

Meta documented desktop and laptop broadcasting in a March 22, 2017 announcement. Treat that as background on the workflow, not a current screen-by-screen guide: interface labels and options can change. For current desktop instructions, start from Facebook’s current Help Center or Live Producer.
How to go live from the Facebook mobile app
- Open the Facebook app and tap the composer labeled What’s on your mind?
- Choose Live video. Facebook’s mobile instructions confirm this composer-to-Live-video path, though the cited help page focuses on adding effects.
- Set the audience and write a clear description so people know what the broadcast is about. Check the current app’s available controls before continuing; menus may change.
- Frame your shot, check that your microphone can pick up your voice, and stabilize the phone if needed. A tripod or mount is optional, not a Facebook requirement.
- Tap Go live when you are ready to begin.
- When finished, end the broadcast using the on-screen control and review the available options for the recording.
Facebook’s accessible sources do not establish a current minimum account age or follower count for going live. If you cannot find the Live option or cannot start a broadcast, check the eligibility notice and available features shown in your current Facebook account rather than relying on old threshold figures.
How to go live from a desktop
A desktop setup suits broadcasts where you want to show your screen, add graphics, or switch between cameras. Meta’s 2017 announcement describes broadcasting from a computer using streaming software or external hardware, but it does not confirm that old menu names or direct links remain current.

- Open Facebook’s current Live Producer or Help Center and follow the workflow shown for your account and Page or profile.
- Choose a streaming-software or external-hardware workflow if that is what the current interface offers. Configure the production software or hardware to use the stream details provided by Facebook; do not reuse or share a stream key publicly.
- Set up your scene, camera, microphone, and any screen share or graphics in the production tool. Check the preview and audio before starting.
- Complete Facebook’s current prompts to begin the broadcast, then monitor both the production preview and comments while live.
The precise controls depend on Facebook’s current interface and the software or equipment you choose. No particular provider or device is required or endorsed here.
Make the broadcast easier to watch
- Use a repeatable subject and schedule. A clear recurring theme helps interested viewers know what to expect; it does not guarantee reach.
- Tell followers when you plan to broadcast. Invite people who want updates to follow your Page and enable live-video notifications. Facebook describes notification choices that include all live-video notifications and highlights.
- Invite relevant contacts. Facebook provides invitations to follow a Page or profile. Facebook says follower-led invitations to follow a profile require professional mode.
- Keep the picture steady and audio clear. A phone mount, external microphone, or desktop webcam may help depending on the setup, but these are optional accessories rather than prerequisites.
- Welcome viewers as they arrive. Acknowledge useful questions and explain what is happening for people who join mid-broadcast.
Manage comments during a live broadcast
For a Page, community managers can use live-chat moderation controls, subject to their Page access and role. Facebook documents options to delete or report comments, suspend a person from commenting for 15 minutes, ban someone from the current or all Page live streams, and pin a comment.

When chat is busy, assign a moderator who can handle comments while you present. Use the controls to address disruptive behavior without losing track of the broadcast. Access and permissions differ by Page role; check the current Page access settings if a control is missing.
Save the replay before it expires
Meta announced that, effective February 19, 2025, new Facebook Live broadcasts can be replayed, downloaded, or shared for 30 days before automatic removal. Download or transfer any recording you need before that period ends; do not assume a replay will stay available indefinitely.

For legacy archived live videos scheduled for deletion, Meta said it would notify affected people and provide a 90-day window after notification to download or transfer them. That legacy process is distinct from the 30-day window for new broadcasts.
Why you may not be able to go live
- The Live option is missing: Confirm you are using the current Facebook app or current Live Producer workflow, then check Facebook’s in-product eligibility notice. A current minimum age or follower threshold is not established by the sources cited here.
- You cannot manage a Page broadcast: Check your Page access and role. Page moderation and broadcasting controls can depend on permissions.
- People are not finding the broadcast: Tell followers about the schedule in advance and point interested viewers to Page live-video notifications. These features do not guarantee a particular audience size or reach.
- You need a recording later: Save or transfer it before Meta’s applicable removal window expires.
Monetization: check current availability in Facebook
Meta described Stars, in-stream ads, paid online events, and fan subscriptions in a March 2021 post. That establishes that these programs were described at that time, not that a particular program is currently available to your account, country, or broadcast. Check Facebook’s current monetization interface for program access and eligibility; old numeric criteria should not be treated as current rules.
