Buy the expansion pass only when its current price is lower than the individual add-ons you genuinely expect to use. Choose individual DLC when you want one specific pack, want to wait for a sale, or are unsure about unreleased content. Check the game’s purchase rules first: some titles make their DLC pass-only, while others sell every pack separately.
The calculation also depends on your platform, region, tax, base-game ownership, subscription discounts, and whether the pass includes content that has not launched yet.
What you are comparing
An expansion pass is a bundle that covers multiple downloadable-content releases. Depending on the game, it may include story expansions, new areas, characters, modes, cosmetic items, or several release “waves.” The contents, release schedule, and buying rules are set separately by each publisher.

#1 Best Overall
- Requires The Sims 4 & all game updates. For PC, see minimum system requirements for the pack.
- Rule your story: Build a powerful Dynasty, shape shared Values, choose an Heir, or exile family members in a deep life simulation driven by legacy, prestige, and choice.
- Claim the crown: Rise through Nobility by winning the people, pleasing rival Nobles, dueling with swords, or exposing Scandals that can change the balance of power.
- Scandal fuels drama: Forbidden romances, secret children, and public disgrace can impact careers, relationships, Dynasty Prestige, and Noble Favor.
Neither format is automatically cheaper. The pass is better value only for the content you will actually use. A nominal bundle discount is not a personal saving if most of the bundle would remain untouched.
The fast decision
| Your situation | Usually the better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want nearly every included expansion | Expansion pass | The combined individual price may exceed the bundle price, and one purchase covers the listed releases. |
| You want one specific pack | Individual DLC | You avoid paying for content you do not want. |
| You are waiting for a discount | Individual DLC, or a discounted pass later | Either option can fall in price; buying the full-price bundle early removes that flexibility. |
| The game makes the DLC pass-only | Expansion pass | There is no separate purchase route for the included packs. |
| Some content is unreleased and you are uncertain about it | Individual DLC, if available | You can wait for reviews, launch details, or a sale before committing. |
| You already own one included pack | Compare the remaining items carefully | The storefront may or may not reduce the pass price after an earlier purchase. |
How to calculate the real value
Use prices from the same storefront, currency, platform edition, and region. A price from a console store cannot be compared directly with a different platform’s price if taxes, promotions, or entitlements differ.
- List the DLC you would definitely buy. Do not count an item merely because it is included. Separate “certain,” “maybe,” and “not interested” content.
- Record each current individual price. Use the store where you will play, and note whether the amount is a sale price, a member price, or a regular price.
- Add the individual prices. Include tax where the storefront adds it at checkout. Keep the calculation in one currency.
- Record the pass’s current price. Note the regular price as well when the store displays both, because a temporary discount can make the pass look better than it normally is.
- Subtract content you would not use. Your personal comparison is the value of the wanted items, not the advertised value of every item in the bundle.
- Check timing and entitlement rules. Confirm which items are already released, whether future releases are included, whether the price is locked, and whether buying one pack now changes the later pass price.
A simple personal-value test is:
value of wanted individual DLC − current pass price

If the result is positive, the pass costs less than buying the content you want separately. If it is negative, individual purchases are cheaper for your use case. If the result is close to zero, flexibility may matter more than the small price difference.

Illustrative calculation
Suppose three packs cost $15 each and the pass costs $30. Buying all three separately would cost $45, so the pass saves $15. If you want only one pack, your personal comparison is $15 versus $30, making the individual purchase the cheaper choice. The same bundle can therefore be good value for one player and poor value for another.
Account for discounts without double-counting them
Compare like with like. If the pass is on sale but the individual packs are at regular prices, record that as a temporary advantage, not a permanent one. Conversely, if individual packs are discounted during a publisher sale, a full-price pass may no longer be the bargain shown at launch.
Subscription discounts can change both sides of the calculation. EA says EA Play members save 10% on supported digital purchases, including full games, Season Passes, and DLC. Apply that discount only where the platform and item qualify, and verify whether another sale can be combined with it.

| Forza Horizon 6 Expansion Bundle | $49.99. A separate regular-price figure is not stated. | Two expansions. | The cited listing does not establish which expansions have launched. | The listing presents the bundle as reduced compared with buying each expansion separately; verify whether each expansion is sold alone in your store. | The base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription is required. | Xbox listing; eligibility and pricing can differ by platform and region. | The advertised reduction matters only if you plan to use both expansions. |
| EA Play member discount | Not a DLC pass price. EA states a 10% saving on supported digital content. | Applies to eligible full games, Season Passes and DLC. | Not applicable; this is a purchase discount rather than a release bundle. | Individual purchase rules remain those of the game and storefront. | Not stated as a general requirement. | Supported platforms only; confirm eligibility before using the discount. | Apply the 10% reduction to the items that qualify, then compare the resulting totals. |
When the expansion pass is the better buy
You expect to use most of the contents
The strongest case for a pass is straightforward: the items you want cost more separately than the pass costs now. Include every expansion you would otherwise purchase, but exclude content you would never play. A bundle containing four items is not automatically better than buying one item at a lower price.
The game uses pass-only DLC
Some publishers use the pass as the only purchase method. Nintendo’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses listing explicitly says its DLC packs are not available individually. In that situation, the decision is not “pass versus individual”; it is whether the complete pass is worth its listed price. If you want one wave, you still receive the others because the store does not provide a narrower option.
You want convenience and a known total
A pass can simplify budgeting when you already know you will buy every listed release. One transaction can also prevent forgetting a later expansion, although you should still read exactly what the pass includes. Do not assume that a pass covers every future item the game may ever receive; use the named contents and wave count on the store page.
The current pass discount is unusually large
A temporary promotion can change the result. Splatoon 3’s listing, for example, displays a regular price of $24.99 and a current price of $17.49, marked 30% off. That sale price may make using both named waves economical. Recheck the calculation when the promotion ends rather than treating $17.49 as the permanent price.

When individual DLC is the better buy
You want only one add-on
Selective buyers should start with the individual price. Paying for unwanted content turns a bundle discount into an unnecessary expense. This is especially important when the pass contains several large releases but your interest is limited to one story, mode, or location.
You prefer to wait for reviews or sales
Buying separately lets you evaluate each release after launch. You can wait for a sale, read final feature details, and decide whether a future pack deserves your money. That flexibility has real value when a pass includes unreleased content and the store does not guarantee a price reduction later.
You already own part of the bundle
Do not assume that buying the remaining packs individually is always worse. Check the store’s ownership detection and the pass price while signed into the account that owns the earlier DLC. Some storefronts adjust bundles; others continue to display a fixed price. The calculation must use the price you can actually pay at checkout.
You may change platforms or regions
DLC entitlements can be tied to a platform account, edition, or regional storefront. If you are moving from one platform to another, verify transfer rules before buying a large bundle. A lower price on one platform is not useful if the entitlement will not follow you to the platform where you intend to play.

Questions to answer on the store page
Before selecting either option, open the full product description rather than relying on a banner that says “includes expansions.” Confirm each of these points:
- Exact contents: Write down every named pack, wave, bonus, or expansion. “Expansion pass” is a product label, not a universal list of features.
- Release status: Mark each item as available now, dated for later, or not yet dated. A pass can combine all three states.
- Individual availability: Look for separate product pages or an explicit statement that packs are pass-only.
- Base-game requirement: Check whether you must own the game or whether an eligible subscription supplies access. The Forza Horizon 6 listing, for example, requires the base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Edition compatibility: Confirm that the pass matches your game edition and platform.
- Currency and tax: Compare amounts shown in the same currency and include checkout tax where applicable.
- Sale end date: A displayed discount may be temporary. Record the regular price before deciding how much value the promotion creates.
- Subscription eligibility: If you receive a member discount, verify that the pass or DLC qualifies and whether the discount applies on your platform.
- Ownership adjustment: If you already bought one pack, check the signed-in account’s actual pass price.
- Refund and cancellation rules: Unreleased or partially consumed digital content may have different refund conditions. Read the store’s current terms before pre-purchasing.
Common mistakes that make a pass look cheaper than it is
Counting content you would never buy
Publishers commonly present the total theoretical value of every component. Your relevant total is smaller if you dislike some of the included releases. Keep a personal list of wanted items and calculate from that list.
Comparing a sale price with regular individual prices
This can be useful for deciding what to buy today, but label the result as temporary. For a long-term value judgment, compare regular prices as well as today’s prices so you know whether the advantage depends entirely on a promotion.
Ignoring the base game
A pass is not a substitute for the game it expands. If you do not own the base game, add its current cost to your budget unless an eligible subscription provides access. The Forza Horizon 6 listing makes this dependency explicit.
Assuming every future release is included
A pass covers the content named in its listing. A publisher may release additional DLC outside that bundle. Count only the specified waves or expansions, and treat unannounced future content as unconfirmed.
Forgetting currency, tax, or region
Prices can differ between countries and storefronts. The Fire Emblem listing displays both a U.S. dollar amount and a Canadian amount, while a sale such as Splatoon 3’s displayed $17.49 may not appear identically in every region. Use your own checkout total.
Buying one pack first without checking the bundle policy
If you expect to buy the pass later, inspect whether the store credits an existing purchase or reduces the bundle. The answer is game- and storefront-specific; do not infer it from another title.

A practical decision worksheet
| Check | Your entry | How it affects the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Individual DLC you definitely want | List each pack | Only these items count toward your personal value. |
| Current individual total | Add same-store prices | Use the amount you would actually pay today. |
| Pass current price | Record sale or regular price | Compare directly with the individual total. |
| Pass regular price | Record if shown | Shows whether the advantage depends on a temporary sale. |
| Unreleased content | Mark each future item | Decide how much uncertainty you accept. |
| Individual purchase permitted? | Yes, no, or not stated | No means the pass may be the only route. |
| Base game or subscription needed? | Record requirement | Add any missing access cost to your budget. |
| Platform and region | Record storefront | Prevents comparing incompatible prices or entitlements. |
| Subscription or sale discount | Record eligibility and end date | Apply only discounts that work for your account and platform. |
| Share of contents you expect to use | Estimate honestly | A low share usually favors individual DLC, even when the bundle advertises a discount. |
Bottom line
Choose the expansion pass when the named content covers most of what you want and its current, same-store price is below the individual total. Choose individual DLC when your interest is narrow, when you want to wait for sales or reviews, or when the pass includes too much uncertain future content. Always verify whether individual buying is allowed, whether the base game is required, and whether your platform, region, or subscription changes the price.
