For a long-distance connection, the best choice depends on what you are connecting and how far apart the endpoints are. Standard four-pair copper Ethernet is limited to a 100 m (328 ft) channel. Beyond that, use a properly equipped fiber link for a wired connection, or consider a purpose-built outdoor point-to-point wireless bridge when connecting separate buildings without a cable run. Ordinary Wi-Fi and mesh extenders are mainly for extending coverage nearby; they are not the same as a dedicated bridge link.
Ethernet cable vs. Wi-Fi for long distance: the quick comparison
| Option | Best fit | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Four-pair copper Ethernet | A direct wired connection with a channel no longer than 100 m (328 ft). | The standard channel limit includes structured cabling and patch cords; a longer cable is not a guaranteed compliant solution. Cisco’s physical-infrastructure guide states the 100 m limit. |
| Fiber Ethernet | A wired route longer than the conventional copper limit, or one exposed to significant electrical noise. | Requires compatible optical interfaces or media conversion at the endpoints, plus suitable installation. Cisco describes fiber as inherently noise immune, while noting that optical transceivers can be susceptible to electrical noise. Cisco guide. |
| Outdoor point-to-point wireless bridge | A link between separate buildings or sites where running cable is difficult. | Results depend on the particular equipment and site. Endpoint placement, alignment, obstacles, interference, and local regulations matter. TP-Link’s outdoor guidance describes this remote-building use case. |
| Standard Wi-Fi or mesh extension | Improving coverage around an existing home or building, such as reaching a nearby yard. | Coverage depends on distance, obstacles, and radio conditions; this is not equivalent to a dedicated building-to-building link. TP-Link’s guide distinguishes local outdoor coverage from a farther remote-site connection. |
How far can an Ethernet cable run?
For conventional four-pair copper Ethernet, plan around a maximum channel length of 100 m (328 ft). Cisco’s 2023 guide, which references ANSI/TIA-568, gives this limit for the channel—not simply for one cable segment. The full path, including structured cabling and patch cords, counts.
Do not assume that a cable will work reliably or meet the standard merely because it is sold in a longer length. Cisco discusses specially validated long-reach cabling and other approaches, but those are specific solutions that require validation for the installation and verification of installed performance; they do not make arbitrary over-limit copper runs compliant. Cable type, environment, grounding, and installation requirements also matter.
What to use beyond the copper limit
Choose fiber for a longer wired route
Fiber is a practical option when the route exceeds 100 m or when electrical noise makes copper less suitable. It does not connect directly to ordinary copper RJ45 ports: each endpoint needs a compatible optical interface, or appropriate media-conversion equipment. The fiber type, optics, and equipment must match the link requirements. Cisco also notes that while fiber itself is inherently noise immune, optical transceivers can still be susceptible to electrical noise. See Cisco’s cabling guidance.

Choose a point-to-point bridge for a separate building
A point-to-point wireless bridge is designed to create a network link between two endpoints, often one at each building. It can avoid installing a physical cable between sites when the location and equipment are suitable. This is different from putting a regular Wi-Fi extender farther from the router: an extender expands local coverage, while a bridge is purpose-built to link locations.
TP-Link’s 2021 outdoor guide uses 100 meters (300 feet) as a practical marker for outdoor coverage expansion and describes a point-to-point bridge for a farther secondary building. That is vendor guidance, not a universal distance rule. Check the chosen bridge’s documentation for siting requirements, including line of sight where applicable, and verify local regulations before installation.

Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
Use standard Wi-Fi or mesh for nearby coverage
If the goal is to improve signal in a nearby yard, garage, or part of the same building, a standard access point or mesh system may be more appropriate than a dedicated bridge. Walls, distance, and radio conditions affect the result. If the goal is a network connection to another building, evaluate a bridge or a wired link instead of assuming an ordinary extender will provide a suitable site-to-site connection.

No general speed or distance can be promised for all bridges. Capabilities vary by model and installation, and the vendor’s stated wireless signaling rate is not the same as real application throughput. For example, TP-Link’s EAP115-Bridge KIT product page describes a 5 GHz, 300 Mbps kit; that is product-page specification language, not a guarantee of 300 Mbps application throughput at a particular distance or in every environment. How to choose for your route
- Measure the complete route. Include the cabling path and patch cords, not just the straight-line distance between endpoints. If a copper channel would exceed 100 m (328 ft), plan for another solution.
- Decide whether the connection must be wired. For a wired path beyond the copper limit, investigate fiber and compatible endpoint equipment. For separate buildings where installing cable is impractical, assess an outdoor point-to-point bridge.
- Check the physical site. For cable, consider route feasibility and installation conditions. For a bridge, check endpoint placement, alignment, obstructions, interference exposure, and the selected model’s requirements.
- Set a realistic performance target. Consider the throughput your applications need, but do not equate a vendor’s stated wireless signaling rate with guaranteed application throughput. Verify the selected equipment’s documented capabilities for your region and installation.
- Compare the complete installation. Include cable routing or fiber conversion equipment, bridge hardware at both ends where required, mounting, and the complexity of installing and validating the link.
